THEME: Climate Change Information: An Emerging Need for a Better Future

CONTEST GUIDELINES

A. On-the-Spot Painting Contest


1. The poster should revolve around the theme which will be announced by the contest
administrator during the contest proper.
2. The medium for visual artistry shall be oil pastel only. The required base paper to be
used during the contest, is an illustration board.
3. Only illustration board will be provided by the organizers. Borrowing of materials from
other contestants shall not be allowed.
4. The alloted time for the contest is two (2) hours, after which all entries shall be
submitted to the contest administrator. Contestants may decide to submit his poster
earlier without waiting for the lapse of two (2) hours. Late submission shall be deducted
1% from the total for every extension of five (5) minutes. A fraction of five (5) minutes
shall already be considered five (5) minutes for purposesof the deduction.
5. Each painting shall be identified by a number that corresponds to the number and
identity of the contestant for the judging process.
6. Judging shall be based on the following criteria:
a. Originality of the idea 40%
b. Relevance to the theme 40%
c. Overall Impact 20%

B. Slogan Making Contest


1. The slogan should revolve around the environmental theme, which will be announced
by the contest administrator during the contest proper.
2. The slogan shall be in English which must be catchy, single and clear.
3. The slogan shall consist of a maximum words of fifteen (15).
4. The material to write on the medium for visual artistry shall be provided by the
organizers. Contestants shall bring their own felt tip marking pen.
5. The alloted time for the contest is one (1) hour, after which which entries shall be
submitted to the contest administrator. Contestant may decideto submit his slogan earlier
without waiting for the lapse of one (1) hour.
6. Each slogan shall be identified by a number that corresponds to the number and identity
of the contestant for the judging process.
7. Judging shall be based on the following criteria:
a. Creativity 20%
b. Relevance to the theme 40%
c.Workmanship 20%
d. Visual Impact 20%

C. Environmental Quiz (Individual Category)


1. English and Filipino shall be used as the official languages in the conduct of the quiz.
2. Questions shall focus on environmental facts, laws, current events, initiatives and other
subjects pertaining to the environment and ecology (specifically DepED Order No. 93, s. 2011;
DepED No. 254, s. 2007; DepED Order No. 52, s. 2011; DepED Order 18, s. 2016)
3. All contestants shall be assigned in a corresponding chair based on the assigned number.
A quiz board and chalk are provided for each contestant.
4. There shall be fifteen (15) questions to be asked orally.
5. The questions shall be categorized as easy, average and difficult. There shall be five (5)
questions per category and given a definite point as follows:
a. Easy 1 point each
b. Average 2 points each
c. Difficult 3 points each
6. Each question shall be read twice by the quizmaster. The contestants shall only begin to
answer as soon as the quizmaster shall have read the question twice and says "GO" . The
contestants shall write their answer in big bold letters. Countdown shall start immediately
thereafter.
7. Contestants shall be given a maximum of 20 seconds to answer questions that require
computation. Other questions shall only be alloted ten (10) seconds.
8. Should the contestant decides to change an answer, he shall cross out the answer so written
with only horizontal line and the new answer shall be written legibly above the crossed out
answer. The contestant is allowed to change answer within the time alloted for a particular
question.
9. After the time has expired, each contestant must show his answer to the audience before the
quizmaster reads the correct answer. The facilitator(s) read and acknowledge whether the
answer of each contestant is correct or not.
10. The contestant with the highest final score shall be declared as the first place winner,
the second highest as the second place winner, and the third highest as the third place winner.
11. In case of a tie, a clincher question shall be used to break the tie. The contestant that gives
the first correct answer will be declared as winner.
12. Any violation of the aforementioned guidelines shall cause disqualification of the contestant
concerned.
13. If applicable, depending on the number of entries, an elimination round shall be held.

D. Extemporaneous Speaking
1. Contestant must be fluent in English laguage.
2. Each contestant shall be identified only by a number through a drawlots conducted before the
contest proper.
3. As a measure of fair play, the rest of the contestants shall be separated and placed in a
room where they could not hear the contestant on board delivering the speech.
4. The contestant shall be given one (1) minute to organize his thoughts on the topic after the
contest administrator shall have read the same twice.
5. Each contestant shall be given a minimum of two (2) minutes and a maximum of three (3)
minutes to deliver his speech.
6. Contestants shall be made to stop when time is up.
7. Judging shall be based on the following criteria:
a. Content 40%
b. Unity/Organization of Ideas 30%
c. Delivery/Stage Presence 30%

8. The three (3) highest scoring contestants shall be declared the winners.

E. Photo TREEbute
1. Only registered digital SLR and digital point-and-shoot cameras are allowed to be used during
the contest.
2. During the contest registration, the contestants must also register their respective cameras
which will beused for the contest. The contestants must submit the soft/digital copy of three (3)
photos, direct from their cameras, as their entry for elimination/qualifying round. These
photos must comply with the following:
a. The photos must focus on trees as the subject.
b. The photos must not be taken inside Mangaldan National High School.
c. The photos must have been taken a day before the contest registration.
d. The camera must activate the date and time setting to appear on the photo.
e. The photos must not have undergone digital editing and enhancement.
3. Depending on the number of entries, the top three (3) contestants shall qualify for the final
round.
4. In the final round, the contestants shall be given one (1) hour to take pictures in the venue
determined by the organizers. Contestants are allowed to use only their registered digital SLR
or point-and-shoot cameras to take as many pictures as possible. After the alloted time, however,
the contestants must choose only one (1) photo; transfer the soft copy of their chosen entry
on a laptop computer provided by the organizers; and provide a title of the photo which shoul
capture the message of the subject.
5. Judging shall be based on the following criteria:
Originality 40%
Did the contestant usecreative techniques to make an interesting effect without
compromising the content? Is the idea original?
Message 30%
Does the photo transmit a clear and identifiable message about trees?
Impact 20%
Is the image/idea powerful? Does it evoke a feeling to take positive action from
viewer?
Technical Compliance 10%
Does the photo follow guidelines of the contest? Is the image quality good enough to
achieve the purpose of the contest? _________

F. Mural Painting Contest (Modified)


1. The painting should revolve around the theme which will be announced by the contest
administrator during the contest proper.
2. The medium for visual artistry shall be water-base paint. The required base paper to be
used during the contest, however, is an illustration board instead of wall.
3. A 40" x 60" size of illustration board will be provided by the organizers. Borrowing of
materials from other contestants shall not be allowed.
4. The alloted time for the contest is four (4) hours, after which all entries shall be
submitted to the contest administrator. Contestants may decide to submit his painting
earlier without waiting for the lapse of two (2) hours. Late submission shall be deducted
1% from the totalfor every extension of five (5) minutes. A fraction of five (5) minutes
shall already be considered five (5) minutes for purposesof the deduction.
5. Each painting shall be identified by a number that corresponds to the number and
identity of the contestant for the judging process.
6. Judging shall be based on the following criteria:

G. Environmental Sad and Glad Pictures Contest


1. The contestant output may be prepared even before the Leaders' Summit.
2. Every participant shall identify one place in nature within his neighborhood or municipality
that makes him GLAD and another place that makes him SAD. The participant should draw the
place that makes him GLAD or take a photograph of it and stick the 3x5 photo on a short bond
paper. The same procedure shall be done to the SAD place. The participant shoul describe in less
than ten (10) sentences each picture of the GLAD and SAD places why he chose those places.
Write the description on the bond paper below the picture or drawing. The participants shoul
be able to make a map of these places and their immediate vicinity identifying the nearest
body of water.
3. Judging shall be based on the following criteria:
a. Pictures/Drawing 40%
b. Appropriate Explanation 30%
c. Map Drawn 30%

H. Science Investigatory Project (SIP)

I. Science Quiz Bee (Individual Category)


1. English shall be used as the official language in the conduct of the quiz.
2. Questions shall focus on learning competencies provided for each grade level from first to
fourth quarters.
3. All contestants shall be assigned in a corresponding chair based on the assigned number.
A quiz board and chalk are provided for each contestant.
4. There shall be fifteen (15) questions to be asked orally.

J. Sci Writing Contest (Filipino and English)


1. It shall be an on-the-spot essay writing contest. As such, the theme/topic shall be announced
during the contest proper.
2. The essay must be written in ENGLISH, consisting of not less than 200 words but not more than
300 words, handwritten on a short bond paper (8.5" x 11") provided by the organizers with one
inch margins on all sides.
3. The essay should be written legibly in black or blue ink only.
4. Contestants shall be given one (1) hour to complete their essay. They shall not be allowed to
leave the contest venue once the contest has officially started.
The contest administrator shall decide if an elimination round is proper and necessary.
6. The top three contestants shall be chosen as winners.
Note: The same guidelines for Filipino category shall be used. However, the essay
must be written in FILIPINO.
7. Criteria for judging shall be based on the following:
a. Content 40%
b. Relevance to the Theme 30%
c. Unit/Organization of Ideas 15%
d. Grammar 15%

K. Environmental Debate (Group)


1. There will be a Group Case Building Activity to determine the teams that will qualify to the
Final Debate Round.
2. Each team shall make an argumentative essay on both the AFFIRMATIVE (AFF) and NEGATIVE
(NEG) sides of a given motion.
3. In arguing for the AFF and NEG, the following must be present in the essay:
AFF Stand and at least three well-constructed Cases to forward the Stand taken,
answering the Benefit, Necessity and Practicability of the Stand.
NEG Stand and at least three well-constructed Cases to forward the Stand taken,
answering the Benefit, Necessity and Practicability of the Stand.
4. There must be a clash of paradigm, principle and theme between the Cases written in AFF
to the cases written for the NEG.
5. The essays will be evaluated based on the following:
MATTER 40% (the components are logic and relevance)
METHOD 20% (the components are responsiveness
and structure)
6. After the judging for case-building speech/essays, the adjudicators will select the top three.
These entries will fight for the Manner battle referred as the 7-minute challenge. This will
test the team's ability to speak out their ideas using the case-building speech/essay which they
have made.
7. teams will be given three (3) minutes to prepare for a group speech of 7 minutes. The mem-
bers will decide in the team split. They have to decide who will open the speech, who will do
the speech on Benefits Necessity and Practicability, and who gets to conclude the speech.
8. The scoring for MANNER will be between 0-40% which will be added to their previous scores
on Matter and Method.
9. There will only be two teams who will qualify for the Final Round.
10. A new motion will be given thirty (30) minutes before the final round which shall be slated
during one of the plenary sessions.
11. The final round will take the form of an informal debate with guest moderators. Each team,
howver, must have a team split (Benefits, Necessity and Practicability). Judging shall be based
on Matter, Method and Manner.
