Mert Etkin AT 1 Step 3 ENG 101 L Fall 2022

In the article “Summer 2022: Living in a State of Multiple Crisis”, the writer Bruyninckx
(2022), discusses the multiple crises around the world due to climate change. The author mainly
argues the destructive and negative effects of climate change all over the world and how significant
sustainability is. He gives various damaging examples of the effects of climate change on the world.
The writer explains that because of the high level of extreme heat, the risk of drought, and forest fires
will increase. Also, the deterioration of excessive exploitation, ecosystem deterioration, and pollution
will be inevitable fact. The author states that unsustainability is the problem in this globalized
economic system which is based on production and consumption. He states that Floods in Pakistan,
droughts in California, and typhoons in South Korea are the major destructive example problems in
different parts of the world. The writer analyzes that managing the transition to tackle these crises and
solve the problem of the world’s unsustainable resources is necessary. It is explained by the author
that fossil fuel consumption should be reduced and the use of renewable clean nature-friendly energy
resources should be started. I strongly agree with Bruyninckx (2022) that there is a vital situation
regarding climate change so transitions are needed because our world’s recourses are
unsustainable, and using them causes climate change.
Bruyninckx (2022) explains that climate change is a major issue that affects negatively
environmental life through extreme heat, drought risks, and forest fires which are caused by
over-heats. Many countries in Europe became the target of these disasters last summer and this
situation made everyone realize that climate change is now a daily problem. I firmly agree with the
writer, that climate change affects wider areas all over the world and this happens faster every single
day. If we do not take action immediately, there will be nothing to save. Droughts, forest fires, and
extreme heat which are caused by climate change will cause the destruction of various animal/plant
species and a decrease in water resources. As Ağaçayak and Keyman (2018) point out “Climate
change threatens water resources, causes drought, and leads to land cover change. Along with climate
change, population increase also threatens water and food security.” (p.5). This clearly shows us
climate change has a direct impact on agriculture and food/water security. Therefore, poverty can
occur in countries that are related to agriculture. These countries will become impoverished and
poverty will be a problem countrywide. Ağaçayak and Keyman (2018) highlight “Turkey’s tenth
National Development Plan already aims to combat climate change and its effect on water resources. It
also aims to support sustainable agriculture and food security. Working toward these global goals is
the current solution for a sustainable world, ending all forms of poverty, fighting inequalities, and
tackling climate change for all people.” (p.6). This means that as an example of Turkey many
countries have to prevent climate change and this is the way to secure food/water and make it
sustainable nature for agriculture. Fighting against climate change is going to end this crucial issue and
all its negative impacts (droughts, forest fires, and extreme heat) and solve the poverty problem
regarding climate change.
In conclusion, Bruyninckx (2022) properly encourages readers that we have no choice but
to act. It is unacceptable that people remain unconcerned about the threats of climate change.
Governments must inform their citizens, and encounter threats caused by climate change by
encouraging the usage of sustainable energy resources because this is the most effective way of
preventing climate change. Therefore, everyone has an opinion on how they can strive for the world’s
future. Moreover, after I read this article I realized that every person has a great responsibility to
preserve the well-being of the world. If we do not cooperate, this global problem will destroy our
water, food, resources, and lots of animal/plant species. Consequently, precautions should be taken
immediately regarding climate change.
