Literary Arts

Myths, legends and/or folklores are the literary works that our commonly
passed on by generations to its local community. We have different mythical
creatures that our local communities are well known. Such as Bathala, Malakas at
Maganda, The Monkey and the turtle (Si Pagong at si Matsing), Aswang and other
more different stories and characters.

Bicolano Myths

“The Ibalong Festival is based on indigenous folklore, and is perhaps the only

A story from myths may be ancient but a fresh re-telling of it may still be
relevant and entertaining. Modern-day myths are often derivations and adaptations of
the myths of old.

‌ Myths are tales and stories based on tradition and culture of a particular place
or community, these may be in written and/or oral traditional in a form of chants.
Mythology stories around the country can be a source, suited for discovery and
interpretation of a creative and artistic way of storytelling.

The Philippine beliefs of creatures is spread-out, consisting of a mix of beautiful

and powerful gods and goddesses, bloodthirsty creatures, and mysterious peculiarities.
Haliya is a goddess of the moon worshipped by the pre-colonize people in Bicol.
Bakunawa is a sea serpent like dragon, a god of Bicolano and Visayan origin.
Kapres is known to be tall, dark, and sometimes hairy beings that are neither kind or
malicious
Dalikamata is a goddess of truth and kindness in the Visayan origin.
The manananggal is a vampire like creature that separated from the lower body, it
brings havoc among provincial towns.
The tikbalang is a creature with a human body and the head of a horse.
Lakapati is a goddess of fertility from the Tagalog origin.
The berbalang is a creature with wings and vampire like appearance said it came from
smaller towns in Mindanao.

 Chants

Chanting In Folk Catholicism

Pagbasa ng Pasyon is a popular activity during Holy week by Catholic devotees.

This activity composes of group of people that will narrate the story of Christ in a
form of chants. This lasted for a day or two, where they retell the life and passion
of Jesus Christ in Bicol or Tagalog chants.

“Paalay” – Flores de Mayo is a Catholic tradition originated from Batangas, a

prayer in a form of chants dedicated to Inang Birhen Maria. This happens every
month of May when the flowers bloom. Devotees pray novena every day for a
whole month and offers flowers. This is already a tradition by the devotees in
Carolina, Naga City.

The Hudhud

 The hudhud is a tradition by the Ifugao people where they recited and chanted
during the planting and harvesting of rice or funeral wakes and/or other rituals
in the rice terraces. This believe was originated way back 7th century, the
hudhud contained of 40 episodes and this often last for three or four days to
recite. The dialect for this chants are hard to transliterate, it is full of repetitions,
synonyms, figurative terms and metaphors. This is performed with a leader or
chorus style, oftenly lead by an elderly woman that occupies a key position in
the community. The tune for all the verses are common to the entire region for
they used the same tune only.

 Folk ART

Folk arts are all forms of visual arts created or prepared in the situation
of folk culture. A folk art is a way of showing and expressing the artistic skills
and innovation of one’s community local or traditional cultural identity.

“What is Folk Art?”

 FOLK ART is an everyday art.
 FOLK ART is an embedded traditions and culture of the community.
 FOLK ART shows a cultural identity of one community that shares same
values and aesthetics.
 FOLK ART composes of variety of functional and decorative media, these
includes textiles, wood, paper, clay, metal and other materials or
resources common to its community. These may apply to contemporary
arts if the materials are new to the society.
 FOLK ART reflects the traditional art forms of the local group ethnicity,
indigenous, tribal, religious, occupational, geographical, age or gender
based whom recognize with each other.
 FOLK ART nurtures the links between the art and the people with an
artistic spirit that unites all the cultures of the world.

FILIPINO FOLK ART. Colorful,

warm, and fanciful – the taka of
Paete have become the epitome
of Filipino folk art. They are like
the Filipino fiesta painted on
papier-mâché figures of dolls in
Filipiniana, roosters, carabaos,
and fire engine red horses.
These takas are sold side

shops in this town known for its
fine woodcarvers and visual
artists.

classmates, make sure the version of the original story does not
attempt any adaptation, experimentation or imaginative variations.

 Choose a sample of folk arts from your community and develop a

creative digital presentation in groups discussing its elements of
expression and principles of organization.
