Background of the Study

Walmart has grown internationally and opened thousands of locations across
the country. Today, Walmart runs more than 10,500 shops, clubs, and online
stores under 46 banners throughout 24 different nations.

The Reason
Wal-Mart started putting more emphasis on the international markets to
drive its expansion since the financial crisis of 2008 . The main reason for its
enhanced international focus was the limited growth opportunities in its
domestic (US) market since the financial crisis.

1. Africa
Wal-Mart made the decision to grow in Africa through the acquisition of
a local store. In 2011, Massmart Holdings Ltd.'s ownership was largely bought
by Walmart. In the general merchandise, liquor, home improvement, and
wholesale food categories.
Early Difficulties- Wal-Mart's offer was to buy a controlling stake of 51
percent stake in the South African retailer. Its offer was accepted with some
conditions. First of all, Wal-Mart would be restrained from cutting any jobs in
Massmart for two years after the merger.
Solution- Wal-Mart agreed to honor labor bargaining rights for at least
three years after the merger. In a move to develop the local manufacturing
sector, Wal-Mart agreed to implement a program to improve the
competitiveness of local suppliers within three years of the merger approval
date (Icmrindia, 2013).
