Foreword
The Gully Home carries with itself a
sweet story that’ll linger in the sea
breeze that surrounds the house, in
the bricks of the walls that make this
house a home, and in the memories
made and waiting to be made. With
a simple yet bold design statement,
this house is a sustainable approach
to practical residential design where
comfort is prioritised.
For me, entering Gully Home was
like entering a library that values
memories and traditions, respects
the environment it is set in and brings
built form closer to nature in the most
organic fashion. I’m a maximalist, but
this house mesmerised me with its
simplicity.

Site Context
This house is located on a 39 x 93 feet linear plot at the end of a quiet, residential street
in Chennai, overlooking the Bay of Bengal. The design of the Gully Home is a response to
the site’s unique characteristics, calling for a balance between connection and privacy. It is
conceived as a space that welcomes the surroundings while maintaining a sense of seclusion
through the use of layered barriers.

Design Brief
The house was poised to be a gift from a father for his daughter who was getting married,
with the house marking the starting point of her new journey. The uniquely linear plot, facing
the oceanfront, demanded a design that ensured every part of the house had an ocean view.

Design Approach: Climatology

The east-facing building, while offering stunning vistas, also poses the challenge of intense This innovative design utilises natural clay materials, effectively cooling the interior spaces
morning sun and resulting heat. To mitigate this, the entire façade is double-skinned, with and preventing heat transmission. However, to maintain expansive views, large glazing was
an inner core of Porotherm blocks and half-cut bricks on either side. necessary, which presented the challenge of potential heat gain within the spaces.

to the high amount of glazing. This system offered six distinct permutations to suit varying
needs and preferences.

The entire structure has been elevated by 1.5 meters, offering a meandering pedestrian
approach through an entry garden that leads to the house. The basement accommodates
the services and utilities such as car parking, helper’s accommodation, and a battery backup
room.

The Great Room

A small foyer welcomes visitors into the grand great room. This great room has been designed where the Gully Home gets its name from. Just as a street is a gathering place for residents,
by drawing inspiration from the vibrant essence of a bustling street, capturing the spirit of the great room is the focal point of activity, where the vibrant tapestry of life unfolds within
togetherness and joy found in the older parts of Indian cities — also called the gullies. This is the home.

The Living-Kitchen-Dining Areas

The triple-height space at the heart of the house has been designed to create a sense of
openness and tranquillity. The living, dining, and kitchen areas are conjoined into this
space, which opens onto a linear garden with an uninterrupted view of the sea. Here, one
can escape the noise and commotion of the city and immerse themselves in a serene and
private world.

Connected Vertically
To create a greater sense of vertical connection, the Gully Home deviates from the
conventional three-level floor plan by staggering the floor plates by 5 feet on either side of
the triple-height space. This design choice not only adds visual interest but also allows for
views into the great room from other areas of the house.

An open metal dog-legged staircase elegantly connects the floor plates, with each flight guiding
the user to a different bedroom. This architectural feature adds a touch of sophistication and
seamless flow, enhancing both the house’s aesthetic appeal and functional accessibility.
