FALSE CEILING

A false ceiling is a ceiling made beneath the concrete soffit of the room of
the building. In other words, it is a second layer of room suspended from
the main roof with the help of metal frame.
• It is also known as dropped ceiling.
• The false ceiling is made by various materials like Plaster of Paris,
gypsum board, PVC sheets, etc.
• The choice of material depends upon the use and design of false ceiling.
ADVANTAGES
• It provides a smooth homogeneous surface to the roof.
• False ceiling helps in acoustical treatment.
•It conceals all the non-pleasing elements and hides it from the
viewer’s eyes.
•It also hides the pipelines and the electrical cables running in the
room.
• All the ducts of air-conditioning can be hidden under it.
• False ceiling materials are easy to install and cheap as compared to
traditional roof systems.

DISADVANTAGES

• While putting up decorations or hangings while you have a false

ceiling in place we should consider the strength and durability.
• The false ceiling would reduce the height of the ceiling
considerably and hence do not install false ceiling unless you have a
decent ceiling height.

PLASTER OF PARIS OR P.O.P. CEILINGS

Plaster of Paris false ceiling are attractive, almost no maintenance and has
a long life span.
They are very excellent insulators or heat and cold.
These types of false ceiling don’t only hide the ugly members of structure,
ventilation ducts and conduits but also give smooth finish to the ceiling.

POP ceilings are done in two types : -

1. Murga Jali type (cost of construction = 35 to 65 rs. Per sq.ft.)
2. POP sheet (cost of construction = 150 rs. Per sq.ft. Approx.)
ADVANTAGES

• POP is highly durable and can sustain for years without any wear or tear.
• Unlike gypsum boards, POP can be moulded in various designs and is
flexible to apply on the corners.
• POP is also 25-40 per cent cheaper than gypsum boards.

DISADVANTAGES
• Until and unless skilled labour is working on a POP design, the finesse with
which gypsum boards are manufactured cannot be achieved.
• In case of POP, there is a lot of wastage of mixture. It can make the site
messy.
• The POP has to be perfectly dry for it to be installed.
GYPSUM CEILINGS
Gypsum false ceiling is a hydrated sulphate of calcium.
This type of false ceiling are lightweight, sound insulated, fire resistance, soft and
thermally insulated.
Gypsum false ceiling comes in the shape of square boards that are hung with the
help of iron framework.
The finishing work on these boards like paints, laminates, wallpapers and texture
finish gives good look.

TYPES OF GYPSUM BOARDS :-

• Standard type BOARD DIMENSION :-
THICKNESS :-
• Moisture resistant type • 6ft x 4ft
• 6mm
• Fire resistant type • 8ft x 4ft
• 9.5mm
• Aluminium foil laminated type • 12.5mm
• Sound absorption control type • 16mm CONSTRUCTION COST :-
• Flexible type
RS. 45-95 / sq.ft.
ADVANTAGES
• Gypsum boards are easy to install and clean.
• These boards can provide a seamless look to your ceiling without too many
joints.
• Since these are manufactured in factory machines, the consistency of the
product’s finish and quality is maintained.

DISADVANTAGES
• However, easy to install, it can be a cumbersome process to uninstall these
boards.
• Repairing these means that the complete ceiling will have to be broken
down.
• With time moisture seeps into gypsum boards through leaking roofs or air
conditioning pipes. This could result in fungal growth in the ceiling or even
cause de-shaping of the boards. To avoid this opt for moisture resistant
boards.
•Gypsum boards are expensive than POP.
PVC CEILINGS
PVC false ceiling is more preferable as compared to POP ceiling and today
everybody is running for PVC false ceiling instead of POP. .

CONSTRUCTION COST :-
THICKNESS :- 7mm – 9mm
RS. 80-100, 150/sq. ft.
ADVANTAGES
• PVC is more durable than POP.
• PVC is more water resistant than POP.
• Using PVC false ceiling makes the room
cool.

DISADVANTAGES
• The material used is chlorine which is very dangerous in its
natural state.
• They are not so solid so if something heavy is hanged with the
ceiling, it can damage the ceiling as well as the object.
CEILING TILES

Ceiling tiles are those type of tiles which are fixed with the help channel grid
ceiling system.

TYPES OF CEILING TILES

• Gypsum based ceiling tiles
• Mineral fibre ceiling tiles TILE DIMENSION :-
595mmX595mm
• Metal ceiling tiles
• Wooden ceiling tiles
TILE THICKNESS :-
• Glasswool ceiling tiles
12mm/15mm

DRYWALL

A drywall is a high performance lightweight interior wall system consisting of

a GI steel frame, encased in gypsum plasterboards on either side attached
with self-drilling drywall screws. The joints are then taped and finished with
gypsum jointing compounds.

Drywalls can be used to partition any interior and are the preferred choice of
construction for a range of applications, in homes, hotels, hospitals, schools,
theatres, and industry. They are strong and robust (drywalls of up to 15
metres high have been built) and can typically last the lifetime of a building.
