Wrap the spline or key end of the shaft with thin plastic to prevent damage to the seal lip during installation 8, Install the © ting onto the seal cover and retain with petroleum jell. 9. Slide the seal cover assembly over the shaft and into the housing bore. Install the retaining ring, NOTE: When using a beveled retaining ring, install the ring with its beveled side out. SHAFT SEAL (MOTOR) The lip-type shaft seal can be replaced without major disassembly of the unit. However, replacement of the shatt seal requires removal of the motor from the machine. Refer to “Motor: Removal’ to remove the motor from the machine. 1. Place the motor on a clean workbench for repair, Remove the large snap ring from the housing. 2. Carefully remove seal, 1, from the housing bore. Puncture the face of the seal with a sharp screwdriver to help pry out the seal. A slide hammer puller also can be used to remove the seal. Take care not to damage the housing bore or shaft. 3, Inspect the sealing area on the shaft for rust, wear, or contamination. Polish the sealing area on the shatt if necessary. 4, Wrap the splines on the shaft with a thin plastic to prevent damage to the seal lip during installation. Lubricate the inside diameter of the new seal with petroleum jelly. NOTE: Apply a light coat of sealant to the outside diameter of the seal prior to Figure 3.37 installation to help prevent leaks caused by a damaged housing bore.
