Mergulhão (Warm-up Dance)

The mergulhão, from mergulho, literally "dive" or "leap," is a warm-up dance

that the galantes and figureiros perform uncostumed in front of the banco,
accompanied by singing and instrumental music.

"Nazaré Pedregulho"

Pronounced "Pé de Gui," pedregulho denotes stony soil; Nazaré Pedregulho is

the name of an engenho in the region.

Salustiano explains the joke: how can you have a married virgin? Because she
was married today and the marriage hasn't been consummated yet.

Mateus continues saying good evening to the old ladies (velhinhas), single men
(rapezes solteiros), and married men (homens casados).

The following sometimes is part of the dialogue between Mateus and the
Captain.

Capitão: Mateus, que é que tá Mateus, what are you lookin' for?
percurando [procurando]?

Mateus: Tou procurando emprego. I'm looking for a job.

Every Mateus comes looking for work, but each Mateus has a different
profession and adapts this part of the scene to the particular trade he has chosen.
Some even bring a goat on a cord.
The banco calls Sebastião, who will greet the audience in a similar way. They
are thought of as brothers; Mateus is the older.

Salustiano: Nessas altura quando ele
[Sebastião] termina de dar a boa noite
dele também aí o Capitão diga que vai
viajar que é noivo que está pra casar e
vai-se embora.
At this point, when Sebastião finishes
saying good evening, then the Captain
says that his going to travel, that he is

O Soldado da Gurita (The Soldier of the Guardhouse)

The Soldier enters and makes the speech that he is obligated to give, in
Salustiano's words, "a loa que ele tem nessidade [necessidade] de dizer."

Sometimes in performance, the last word of the last line of each of the
Soldier's stanzas is spoken by the banco; this is also done by repentistas (Leda
Alves, personal communication).

A similar exchange takes place between Sebastião and the Soldado. Once both
vaqueiros have given permission for the Capitão and family to celebrate their
return, they chase the Soldado from the roda.

Mateus: Agora, parente, ele pegou a Now, cousin [used like partner,
gente, vamo' pegar ele. "homeboy"], he got us, let's get him.

sale. When he's finished selling, he becomes a Cobrador collecting money.

A fight ensues between Mateus, Sebastião, and the Cobrador. When he succeeds
in collecting his payment, he leaves under blows of the bexiga.

Salustiano explained how this scene can be adjusted to fit time constraints. The
Ambrósio actor has to know all the figuras and sell them in the right order.
When time is short, he can group them in groups of five, but still preserves the
same order. The audience can follow such an abbreviated scene, according to
Salustiano, because they know very well which characters Ambrósio is imitating.

Mestre Domingo arrives at the Capitão's house looking for work carrying

The Caboclo de Urubá wears a feathered loincloth, with feathered decorations

on his head, wrists, and ankles. The scene is short in terms of dialogue, but the

A Onça (The Jaguar)

The onça is a jaguar that stalks the sertão and preys on bulls and calves.
Salustiano, growling, imitates its entry, its crouched stalking pose, its eyes
darting from side to side. It is supposed to enter slowly, accompanied by music.

They yell back and forth as they fight with the onça.

Bastião: Mateus! Tenha cuidado que a Mateus! Be careful or the jaguar will

Then the onça eats Mateus.

Bastião pulls on the onça, which makes protesting growls.

Bastião: Vem parente! Onde é que tu Come on, pardner! Where are you,
estais, parente? pardner?

Mateus: Eu 'tou no rabo da onça. Eu
'tou vendo tudo que a onça tem
dentro da barriga. Tem bode, tem boi,
tem tudo aqui dentro da barriga dessa
gota. Mas me puxa, parente, que eu
passo pelo buraco dela. Ela comeu mas
caga. [Salu: Aí o povo morre de rir.]
I'm in the tail end of the jaguar. I'm
looking at everything that the jaguar
has inside its belly. There's a goat,
there's a bull, there's everything inside
the belly of this thing. But pull me,
pardner, so I'll pass through its hole. It
ate, but it will shit. (Salustiano: At this
point the people die laughing.)

Bastião pulls Mateus out.

Bastião: Me conta, parente, onde tu Tell me, pardner, where you were.
'tava.

inside. I passed through the liver, I
passed through the figo moreira [a
type of liver], I passed through the
heart, the tripe, the lungs, passing by I
don't know where. But through the
chewing machine I didn't pass,
pardner. Because it would have torn
me up in the machine to do away with
me. Because I would have turned into
shit.

People laugh alot. Bastião undergoes the same ordeal. The Capitão then orders
Mateus to put the onça out.

Capitão: Mateus! Tanga a onça pra Mateus! Throw the jaguar out!
fora.

When he does so, scene is over. The Onça leaps, then runs out through a gap in
crowd.

Corta Pau and Titinque

Titinque is the name given to the character Valentão in Salustiano's version of

cavalo-marinho, which derives from the region of Nazaré da Mata and Vicência.
In Goiana, Aliança, and Itambé the character is called Valentão. The spelling
"Titinque" comes closest to Salustiano's pronunciation. Leda Alves pointed out
(personal communication) that it can also be spelled "Tutunque", which the
Aurélio dictionary (Ferreira 1986) defines as "Bras. N.E. pop. Senhor poderoso e
insolente, mandachuva" (a powerful and insolent man). Furthermore, in
Salustiano's version this scene is divided between two characters. Corta Pau
(Woodcutter) enters first, then "entrega a valentia" (gives the bravado over) to
Titinque.

The cavalo-marinho ends with a series of cocos, announcements of the next performance, and
"vivas" for the players.
