Text: Traditional medicines
1- We now know that in the days before the Europeans came to Africa, African
traditional doctors were good at treating people. They even use traditional
medicines to stop the pain by placing herbs mixed with palm-oil on the wound.
Some traditional doctors made people live longer by using heat. Many old men
who lived to be 80 or 100 years old said it was because they used to sleep beside
a fire all night.
2- Some diseases which Europeans trained doctors couldn’t cure have been
cured completely by African traditional doctors. And in most West African
countries, lots of people like to go to the traditional doctors. Their medicines are
much cheap than the ones you buy in the chemist’s.
3- Let’s stop calling them stupid names. Many of them have already died and
their secrets have gone with them. But because of them many modern hospitals
are starting to study the use of herbs.

Text:
Last Sunday, brother Dakossi brought a cellular phone as a present to my
father. But Dad did not like it and said that he preferred clothes instead. He could
go and see him in Cotonou or send him letters for any problems. Moreover, he
thought that he would have to spend a lot of money each month to go to Mr
Kedote to charge it every four days, which he saw as a waste of money and time.
My father might be right because when he was young, town criers used to
inform the villagers, sometimes, drums were used. Many people usually sent oral
messages or waited for the train or a lorry driver to send letters and parcels to a
friend.
But things have changed. The Internet and cellular phones are quicker and
more practical: you can discuss and solve a lot of problems through a cellular
phone or the Internet everywhere and at any time, but it was difficult for Dad to
understand.

Text :
A long time ago, Africans communicated with the traditional means of
communication. Town criers passed the message from a king or a chief on to the
people in village.
Means of communication have greatly developed. So, people use modern
means of communication today. Among theses means, we can cite the letter, the
telegram, the cell phone, the radio, the television, the computer, the internet,
etc…
The cell phone is so common nowadays. It is a good invention that helps
society gain time and solves problems at distance. Millions of business men use
cellular phones everyday. What a useful toy it is! But like any technological
invention, it has its disadvantages : people use it to tell lies to their friends ; it
makes drivers cause accidents ; radiation increases risks of cancer ; there is finally
the question of theft.
Computers linked one to the others are called Internet. A lot of people use
Internet because of its advantages: school, universities, banks, lawyers, research
laboratories, politicians… use it to communicate and collaborate. Beside these
advantages of the Internet, it also has its disadvantages. There are for example,
cyber fraud, cyber terrorism, cyber criminalities.

Text: Using the telephone.
How well do you communicate on the telephone? Talking on the telephone
is an everyday experience that requires listening and speaking.
When you call someone, start the conversation by identifying yourself to
the person who answers the phone.
“Hello, this is Beverly Jamison.” If you know the person well you may give
just your first name. It is important to identify yourself on the telephone because
your voice is not always recognisable.
If the person you are calling is not there, leave a brief and clear message.
Leave your full name and telephone number, and tell the message briefly in an
orderly way. Thank the listener for taking the message.
Have you ever called a business man or friend who has a telephone
answering machine? After you dial the number, you hear a recorded message that
might sound like this: “Hello, this is Harrey SIMONS. I’m sorry that I can’t answer
the phone just now”. When hear the tone, please leave your number and your

1- Not long ago, parents in rural areas considered the education of female
children like putting water in a perforated basket. They said that a girl is made to
cook, clean the house, help her parents, work in farms and when she gets married
she will serve her husband, bring up children etc…. but not to go to school. Those
parents ignored the children’s rights to education. Most of the time, they claimed
that they had money only for their sons’ education.
2- Nowadays, many efforts are done in this way to change that situation.
For instance, In order to facilitate the task for parents, Benin’s government has
taken an important decision which stipulates “Free education for both boys and
girls in public primary schools” and this decision is now being enlarged to public
secondary schools thanks to most of the parents in Benin who show great
interests in their children’s education. They support schools by paying taxes. This
money helps to build schools, buy equipments and to face other expenses.
UNICEF also helps by sensitizing parents about the importance of sending all girls
to school. Many laws are taken to protect women especially young girls to stay
longer at school. In addition there are also private and religious schools which
participate actively in that change of situation.
