REVIEWER UNIT XI: MECHANICS OF MOTION

Projectile motion – plays a major role in how athletes perform &

how some sports are played. It is known as the Science of Sports.
It is the motion of a body projected horizontally or at angle other
than 90 degrees with the horizontal. It is a combination of free fall
and uniform horizontal motion.
Examples:
1. ) football
2. ) basketball
3. ) firing a gun
4. ) water fountain
5. ) archery
6. ) golf
7. ) javelin throw
8. ) lawn tennis
Galileo Galilei – first described projectile motion as having two
components.
Horizontal (uniform motion) & vertical component (free fall) –
two components under projectile motion.

Elements of Projectile Motion

1.) Trajectory – path of a projectile which follows a parabola.

2.) Projectile – an object that is initially thrown into the air and
continues to move on its trajectory acted upon by gravity.

3.) Time of Flight – the entire duration while the projectile is in its
trajectory. It is known as Time of Life or Time.

4.) Range – the maximum horizonal distance traveled by the

projectile.

5.) Height – the maximum vertical displacement traveled by the

projectile in its trajectory.

6.) Gravity – universal force of attraction acting between all matter.

1
d – object's position.
vᵢ – object's initial velocity.
vf – object's final velocity.
a – object's acceleration.
t – elapsed time.

Formula for Horizontal Component

formula for (d) vᵢt + ½ at2

formula for (vᵢ) vᵢ2 + 2ad

formula for (vf ) vᵢ + at

formula for (d) (vᵢ + vf / 2) t

d = distance m, km, miles

t = time s, min, hr

a = acceleration m/s²

vᵢ = initial velocity

m/s

vf = final velocity

Word Problem
#1: Erwin get into his car to drive to the supermarket. While at rest, he
place his foot on the gas and apply a constant acceleration at 2.5
m/s². What will be his velocity after 10 s and how far he have traveled
in that time?

2
Solution

#2: From rest, a car accelerated at 8m/s².

a) what is the distance of the car at the end of 10s?
b) what is the car's final velocity

Solution

3
#3: With an initial velocity of 20 m/s, a car accelerated at 8m/s² for
10s. Compute for the distance and final velocity.

Solution

Formula for Vertical Component

formula for (h) vᵢt + ½ agt²

formula for (vf²) vᵢ² + 2agh

formula for (vf) vᵢ + agt

formula for (h) (vᵢ + vf / 2) t

h – object's height. (from d to h)

vᵢ – object's initial velocity.
v – object's final velocity.
a – object's acceleration.
t – elapsed time.
g – gravity.

constant value = –9.8 m/s² (downwards movement)

constant value = 9.8 m/s² (upwards movement)

Additional Information:
1. ) Distance is not found in the vertical component.
2. ) Height is the replacement of distance in the vertical component.
5
#1: A rock was dropped from the top of a building and hit the ground
after 5s. What is the height?
Given:
t = 5s
ag = -9.8 m/s²
vᵢ = 0 m/s
Solution:
h = vᵢt + ½ agt²
h = (0 m/s)(5s) + ½ (-9.8 m/s²)(5s)²
h = 0 + ½ (-9.8 m/s²)(25s²)
h = 0 + ½ (-245 m)
h = 0 + -122.5 m
h = -122.5 m

#2: A ball was dropped from rest on a building and it hit the ground
10s. How tall is the building?
Given:
t = 10s
ag = -9.8 m/s²
vᵢ = 0 m/s
Solution:
h = vᵢt + ½ agt²
h = (0 m/s)(10s) + ½ (-9.8 m/s²)(10s)²
h = 0s + ½ (-9.8 m/s²)(100s²)
h = 0s + ½ (-980 m)
h = 0s + -490
h = -490 m

#3: Bon jumped from a cliff and landed safely after falling for 15s.
What is the height of the cliff?
Given:
t = 15s
ag = -9.8 m/s²
vᵢ = 0 m/s

Solution:
h = vᵢt + ½ agt² h = 0s + -1,102.5
h = (0 m/s)(15s) + ½ (-9.8 m/s²)(15s)² h = -1,102.5 m
h = 0s + ½ (-9.8 m/s²)(225s²)
h = 0s + ½ (-2,205 m)
