REVIEWER SIX TRIGONOMETRIC RATIOS

Trigonometry - a study of triangles and the relationship among

their sides and angles.
Rhind Papyrus - where the first known approach in the study of
trigonometry appeared that was written about 2000 BC.
Hypsicles - about 180 BC, a mathematician from Alexandria used
chord functions of angles in doing computations.
Hipparchus (born about about 160 BC) - the introduction of
trigonometry as a science was credited to him.
140 BC - Hipparchus prepared a table of chords of circles & used
this table in the same way we use a table of sines in astronomy
problems.
1st century BC - Heron, a great mathematician, introduced the
tangent function in his study of the areas of polygons.

trigonometry by introducing the
trigonometry by replacing the table
other trigonometric functions of

angles and prepared tables for them

Measurement of Triangles
1
Leonhard Euler - related trigonometry as a branch of analysis.
Trigonometric ratio - ratio of the lengths of two sides of a right
triangle.
1595 - the word trigonometry was first used in a publication by
Bartholomaeus Pitiscus (1561-1613), a German clergyman and
mathematician.
Sine - comes from the Latin sinus, meaning "a bend or guld," or
"the bosom of a garment."
Tangent - comes from the Latin word tangens, meaning "to
touch."
Secant - comes from the Latin word secans, which means
"cutting."
