20 BÀI LUYỆN SPEAKING

BAND 7+

SPEAKING PART 1 SAMPLES

TOPIC 1: Snacks

1. What is your opinion on snacks between meals?

Personally, I’m not a nutritionist myself, so I’m not sure if it has any bad effect on the digestive

system but I suppose that having snacks before a meal would make us full and may not fully enjoy

the meal.

● I’m (not) a + N (job) myself: tôi (không phải) là một …

● make sb + adj: khiến cho ai đó cảm thấy như thế nào

● nutritionist: chuyên gia dinh dưỡng

● digestive system: hệ tiêu hóa

2. Is it healthy to eat snacks?

Well, personally, I think it depends. I mean, snacks themselves are not necessarily detrimental to

our health if we eat them once in a while. Yet, if excessively consumed, these kinds of comfort food

may pose great threats to our well-being given that most of them are high in sugar and calories.

You know, obesity and diabetes, to name but two.

● Once in a while: thi thoảng

● Pose great threats: đem lại những mối nguy hại lớn

● High in sth: có hàm lượng cái gì đó cao

3. What kind if snacks do you like to eat?

People often cannot resist the allure or temptation of bad habits, and I’m not an exception myself.

Honestly, I’ve been eating chips ever since I was a little boy, and until now, I still cannot get rid of

them. Knowing that they’re bad, I don’t eat it on a regular basis, just, you know, a couple of times

a week.

● The allure/ temptation of sth: sự cám dỗ của cái gì

● As I was saying: như tôi đã nói…

● not an exception: không phải ngoại lệ

● get rid of: từ bỏ (Ex: get rid of smoking - bỏ hút thuốc)

● on a regular basis: thường xuyên

4. What kind of snacks do children in your country like to eat now?

Well, I’m not quite paying attention to what kids love snacking on these days, but I suppose that

there hasn't been much change since my time. Back then, I used to have sweet treats like cupcakes

or cookies, and even potato chips. And I mean, who doesn’t love them, they’re super yummy, aren’t

they ?

● Sweet treats: đồ ngọt

5. When do you usually eat them?

Well, as I’ve just mentioned, not quite regularly, just a few times a week. It depends on my feelings

and what I’m doing at the time. Say, having a family movie night or holding a sleepover party with

my buddies. A couple of bites on such occasions wouldn’t hurt, right ?

● as I’ve just mentioned: như tôi vừa đề cập

● Say: ví dụ như là

● Sleepover party: tiệc ngủ qua đêm

6. Do your parents allow you to eat snacks?

For me, when I was a kid, my mom didn’t allow me to have snacks, you know, like most moms

would do. But that’s no longer the case now, when I’m now an adult, and I can have my own

decision on what to eat, though my mom is not exactly content when seeing me snacking.

TOPIC 2: Names

1. Is there any tradition about naming babies in your country?

Well, of course, there is, but naming traditions vary from country to country and culture to culture.

For example, Vietnamese people here are often named by their parents according to their will and

wishes, or people can get themselves named after someone that their parents adore.

● vary from … to …: Có sự khác nhau giữa các…

● be named after: được đặt tên theo ai đó

2. How do you choose names for your next generation?

Well, that’s not my own decision to make, I mean, I cannot have a child by myself, I must get

married, so I guess me and my spouse would sit down and come up with a name for our baby that

both stands for our will. In Vietnam, naming a child sometimes even depends on grandparents'

thoughts and wishes, but it is my offspring, so I think it will be me and my wife/husband’s

responsibility to give him or her a name.

● come up with: lên ý tưởng

● stands for: đại diện cho/ tượng trưng cho

● depends on: phụ thuộc vào

● someone’s responsibility to do something: trách nhiệm của ai đó trong việc làm gì đó

3. Does your name have any special meaning?

Well, everyone’s name has a special meaning, don’t they? But I’m not quite sure about mine, as I

asked my mom, she said she and my dad just gave me a name that they think best suits a boy and

it’s cool.

● suit (v): phù hợp với

4. Do you like your name?

Actually, I don't know what to say about my name since I didn’t even know what it was about but

it cannot be changed and it would go with me to my grave. It can even get carved onto my

gravestone, so there’s no reason why I should hate it.

● go with someone to his/her grave: gắn bó đến hết đời

● carve onto: khắc lên

● gravestone: bia mộ

5. Would you like to change your name?

Well, if I were an international criminal, I guess I would. You know, in order to hide my true identity
and get away from interpol or something like that. But that could hardly be my case, at least I hope
so. Other than that, I suppose it’s really absurd to actually consider changing my name.

● get away from: trốn thoát khỏi… (vd: ai đó/ tội danh…)

● Identity: danh tính

● Absurd: vô lý và ngớ ngẩn

6. Do people in your country ever change their names?

I don’t know about others but in Vietnam, we people speak highly of spiritual belief, and it may

sometimes be a bit superstitious. When a person runs out of luck, some think that their name is to

blame for, like it’s too ugly and probably brings them bad fortune, I suppose. In my experience, I’ve

seen some people who actually change their name in search of better luck.

● speak highly of: đề cao…

● run out of: hết/ không còn…

● S + tobe to blame for: … là nguyên nhân

● in search of: để tìm kiếm…

● Fortune: vận may → bad fortune: vận rủi

7. What name do people at home call you?

It’s kinda bizarre living in Vietnam without a nickname, so of course, I do have one myself. My

parents usually call me Co, a typical nickname for boys in our country. Though I really like this

name, the fact that my mom is always making jokes about how she would use this nickname for me

my entire life actually freaks me out. I mean, it sounds a bit childish, don’t you think?

● in the hope of: với hy vọng…

● have myself something: có cho mình một…

● Bizarre: kỳ lạ

TOPIC 3: Weather

1. What’s the weather usually like in your hometown?

As you haven’t noticed yet, the weather in Vietnam varies from region to region. In the Southern,

Northern and Central parts, they are all different from each other. My hometown, Tuyen Quang, is

a mountainous city in Northern Vietnam, so it bears the same characteristics as other provinces in

the North, except from the fact that it’s quite milder in the summer, which is kinda comfortable to

me. However, when it comes to the winter, it can get super freezing.

● when it comes to: khi nhắc tới…

● Mountainous: vùng núi

● Milder: dễ chịu

● Freezing: lạnh buốt

2. What’s your favorite weather?

I’m not sure, really, but I think I would prefer a bit of breeze. You know, like, living in Hanoi, a

Northern city well-known for its extremely burning weather in the summer, I would love to enjoy

it when it cools down for a bit.

● Breeze: gió mát nhè nhẹ

● Burning weather: thời tiết siêu nóng

3. Do you like the weather in your hometown?

Well, usually, although there’ve been times when I wished it would be a bit milder since I feel,

sometimes, frustrated with this hot weather.

● Frustrated (adj): khó chịu

4. Do you like hot weather?

As I’ve just said, I’ve never been a fan of the extreme heat since experiencing extremely hot weather

through the years makes me sometimes even feel like I can’t take it anymore. In the summer, I sweat

all the time and can’t live without an AC, so how can I like it to be honest?

5. What do you do in hot weather?

Well, I think it actually depends on what I’ve planned for the day. So if I have work to do, I suppose

I would have to finish it before going home to relax. Having said that, if there’s aircon at the gym,

then it’s probably the best place to head to, to be honest.

● Head to (v): đi đến…

● Aircon: máy lạnh

6. Do you prefer wet or dry weather?

I would say that when choosing to live in Hanoi, it’s not really about what my preferences are but

more about what I have to put up with, though I definitely prefer it when the rain is off. That’s for

sure.

● preference: sở thích

● Put up with: chịu đựng…

TOPIC 4: Birthdays

1. How do children celebrate birthdays in your country?

I don’t have a younger sister or brother so I’m not quite sure, but I guess they’re still similar to how

they were at my time. I think children would throw in a party at their place, or at school, and have

some fun with their friends. Well, I suppose that there may be a bit of a difference since they have

more choices of places to party now compared to in the past.

● throw in a party: tổ chức một bữa tiệc

2. How did you celebrate your last birthday?

Well, as I remember, nothing special, just the ordinary birthday cake and a cozy meal with my loved

ones. Though, the old me would prefer to spend the whole night with the boys, painting the town

red. You may find it weird when I say this, but I think I’m too old for that.

● Paint the town red: tiệc tùng hết mình

3. What kinds of birthday gifts do you like to receive?

Can’t say for sure, to be honest. I’m not too picky so everything is great. It can either be some clothes

or a book, I mean, at least they’re care enough to give me a present. Some might fancy extravagant

pieces like jewelry, and obviously I do too, but I don’t mind receiving cheap presents, all I care about

is the sentimental value inside those gifts, and that’s for sure priceless.

● Picky: kén chọn, khó tính

● sentimental value: giá trị tình cảm, tinh thần

● be instilled in: được gửi gắm

TOPIC 5: Transportation

1. What’s the most popular means of transportation in your hometown?

Well, I mean, motorbikes are definitely the most ubiquitous vehicles in Vietnam. In my home city,

Hanoi, there’s no exception, motorbikes run around every corner of this beautiful city. Though I

suppose that would change in the next few decades when, perhaps, electric cars will probably take

the lead.

● Ubiquitous: phổ biến (xuất hiện ở khắp mọi nơi)

● take the lead: dẫn đầu.

2. Do you prefer public transportation or private transportation?

Each has its own perks, to be honest. Using public vehicles would undoubtedly mitigate the on-

going environmental problems, right? However, don’t you think it’s a bit inconvenient, especially

in a densely populated city like Hanoi, where traffic congestion has always been a huge problem.

It's gonna take me hours just sitting on a bus or train to go to school/office. So, I’m not going to be

pretentious, I would go for my own car, without a second thought.

3. Will you use public transport more in the future?

Yeah I would, I guess so. If the government allocates more funds into improving infrastructure,

commuting via buses or trains will be less time-consuming. There will be no reason to hate it then.

Though I suppose that wouldn’t happen anytime soon in Vietnam.

Time-consuming: lâu, tốn thời gian

4. Are there any traffic problems in your area?

Well yeah? I can’t even imagine a place without traffic-related issues. In Hanoi, people have been

suffering through the years with high traffic volumes on the roads. Sometimes I even ask myself

when this problem will be solved as it seems to be getting worse and worse.

● traffic-related issues: vấn đề liên quan tới giao thông

● traffic volumes: lưu lượng giao thông

__HẾT__
