Kim Namjoon
Kim Nam-joon was born on September 12, 1994 in Dongjak-
gu, South Korea. Before his debut, he was an underground
rapper who used the stage name "Runch Randa"; he released
several songs and collaborated with the well-known rapper
Zico. He was part of the South Korean underground hip hop
group Daenamhyup, which consists of Marvel J, l11ven,
Supreme Boi, Iron, Kyum2, Kidoh, Samsoon, Illipse, DJ
Snatch and him. The group was active from 2009 until 2013,
when RM stopped his participation in the group to
concentrate on BTS, although in a call with Supreme Boi, he
said that he would one day participate with Daenamhyup
again, although some members of the group continued to
participate without RM.
He is fluent in English and Japanese, as he continued to
study Japanese after BTS's debut, as all Big Hit members
receive basic Japanese lessons. He also watched the
American sitcom Friends multiple times to help him learn
English.
RM was recruited as the first member of BTS in 2010, during
a Big Hit talent audition. RM rehearsed for years with two
fellow members, underground rapper Min Yoon Gi (Suga)
and dancer Jung Ho Seok (J-Hope). On June 13, 2013, RM
made his debut as the leader of BTS on Mnet's M Countdown
with the song "No More Dream," from their debut single
album 2 Cool 4 Skool.
Currently, he has released his first album as a solo artist,
breaking records in the solo artist category.
