➢ The Caribbean is also called the West Indies Atlantic because Columbus thought he had reached the
East Indies Islands in the Pacific.
➢ Christopher Columbus called the people Indians because he thought he was in the East Indies.
➢ The first inhabitants of the Caribbean are the Ciboney, Arawaks and Carib natives.
➢ The Caribbean got its name from the Carib natives.
➢ Columbus and other Spaniards turned the Caribbean natives into slaves.
➢ Most Natives of the Caribbean died from overwork and diseases the Spanish brought to America.
➢ The French, Dutch and English also began to conquer islands in the Caribbean.
➢ Europeans also brought enslaved Africans to work on the sugar plantations.
➢ Most Caribbean people are descendants from African immigrants.
➢ Immigrants from China, India and the Middle East have also come to the Caribbean to work.
➢ The Caribbean has a variety of ethnic groups, colonists, slaves, and migrants.

➢ Most of the people in the West Indies are Christians and some are Hindus, Muslims, and Jews

➢ The people of the Caribbean celebrate the Catholic tradition of Lent with a big Carnival.
➢ Calypso music is also very popular in the Caribbean.
