Water Scarcity and

Tourism Pollution

Erasmus + 2021/2023
Portugal
Portugal is a european country located in the
Iberian Peninsula and borders Spain .

Vagos is a Portuguese village, in

Aveiro, in the center of the country ,
located near the Atlantic ocean .

People in Vagos live from the

ocean, fishing, tourism, agriculture
and some industries.
Think green!

01 Water scarcity
Water scarcity
Europeans use exorbitant amounts of water every
year, not just for public supply, but also for agriculture,
manufacturing, tourism and other economic sectors.

However, population growth and pollution effects

on climate change, such as persistent droughts, are
putting enormous pressure on Europe's water
availability and quality.

washing machines to work

that can make the ● Don't let the water run

● Don’t let the water run while you
soap your body;
● Save the water that we use to

Little changes cook vegetables to make soup;

Do not water the garden in the

afternoon because the water
evaporates.

● Give another use to the cold water

before the shower, for exemple to
water the plants, to wash the floor;
Water scarcity- solutions
A solution to water scarcity is desalination, that
is a process through which mineral salts dissolved in
water are removed.

Currently, this process, applied to seawater, is

one of the most used to obtain fresh water for
human or agricultural consumption.

Desalination occurs naturally during the water

cycle: evaporation of seawater leaves salt behind to
form clouds that generate rain.
Water scarcity in Portugal
Last Year in Portugal it was the year which
the effects of high temperatures and climate
change were most felt.
So, we started to hear and feel what drought was
and all the problems associated.

Especially in the south of the country,

Alentejo and the Algarve felt more the impact of
this problem.

And some of our dams and rivers were practically empty.

Water scarcity in Vagos
Boco River is a natural heritage of high value,
it is integrated in the Natural Ecological Network in
the south of Vagos.

One of the examples that demonstrated the

drought in our region was the low water level of the
wells, whose water is used for agriculture and
gardening.

So, the lack of precipitation and the high

temperatures, led to a decrease in the water level
in the river and, consequently, to lesser water in the
wells.
Water on planet earth
Drinking water and non-drinking water

Water covers about 70% of the Earth's surface.

The amount of fresh water available for human

use is limited by the planet's natural conditions. In
fact, only 2.5% of all water on Earth is fresh, the
rest being salty (most of it is found in the oceans).
Water on planet earth
Water pollution is mainly caused by people
through industrial chemical waste, garbage and
sewage everyday.

These attitudes have serious consequences for

the planet, for example: drinking water may
become a limited resource; the destruction of
vegetation; the death of animals; the lack of food;
the spread of diseases and desertification of soils.

As human beings we must preserve water, which is a vital element.

02
Tourism Pollution
In Portugal
Tourism pollution
Tourism is one of the sectors that most
contributes for the climate changes. In the
oceans the impacts on pollution are worrying,
like:
● Excess of trash in the traditional beach
destinations;

● Abusive CO2 emissions from

cruises;
● The construction of hotels along the
coastline, leads to reducing the areas of
green spaces and biodiversity.
Tourism pollution
1. Plastics in the ocean:

The oceans receive about 8 million tons of

plastic a year. They become microplastics which
are eaten by fish that we later eat!

The plastic that goes in the seas come from

the most diverse places.

So, it is really important to be aware that

when we go to the the beach we should put our
trash in the garbage.
Tourism pollution
Negative environmental impact caused by tourism is
atmospheric, visual and sound pollution.

● Air pollution - caused by engines and by energy

production and consumption. Emission of gases by
boat engines or any other type of equipment.

● Visual pollution - Pollution of spaces, and the

degradation of the landscape, historic sites and
monuments.

● Noise pollution - through engines, various noises or

entertainment activities.
To conclude
Whatever Men does, it has a strong impact on the planet
but if we are intelligent enough to create all sorts of inventions,

So, why can’t we work with Nature and be kinder to all

species?
