So, how can we live normally when people are socially distanced? Why is it important for people to
understand the situational context of the speech they are delivering?

Good morning! Welcome back to our Oral Communication class! How's the new normal situation to you?
The way we greet our classmates and friends has totally changed. From shaking of hands to just a wink of
an eye, or just touching the elbow part.

Imagine a president or a high-ranking official wearing a face mask during his or her public speech. Is
it awkward? Since we need social interaction / being with people in a particular event is part of our
nature.

This is what we are going to discuss particularly on the types of speech contexts.

Objectives
1. Differentiate types of speech context.
2. Practice effective intrapersonal and interpersonal skills.
3. Reflect on your learning on the types of speech context.
Lesson 5
Speech Context
 It is a situation wherein you express yourself. It also denotes the setting (environment and
circumstances) in which communication occurs.
Context is simply means a setting or a situation in an event
Context in communication refers to the setting in which communication takes
place.
So basically, when we say Speech Context, it refers to the situation or
environment and the circumstances in which the communication occurs.

It is the way that people use to communicate and transmit message orally or
verbally.
Types:

1. Intrapersonal Communication
It means communicating with oneself. It is the internal use of language or thought.
Examples:
 Making decisions
 Comforting ourselves
 Making body movements while thinking
This type of speech context involves one participant only; that is, the individual is both the sender
and the receiver of the message in the communication process. Intrapersonal communication is
simply communicating within oneself.This includes thinking, reflecting, remembering, analyzing and
evaluating of something.

Intrapersonal communication is essential to understanding yourself and others. You need to keep in
touch with yourself to be able to make appropriate responses and sound decisions. Moreover, how
you see yourself affects how you communicate with others.

For example, supposed to be you are the president of the organization. If you have low self- esteem
or not confident you may stutter or find it difficult to express yourself when speaking to other
 people. The situation requires you to engage in intrapersonal communication. You have to think
about what to include in your talk and reflect on your experiences. Without self-dialogue, you
cannot deliver an excellent talk in front the members of your organization

Daydreaming - a person who often thinks about doing something else or being somewhere else,
instead of paying attention to what is happening where you are now. Example, you hate your module
so instead of answering your modules,you go tour room and fantasizing about winning the lottery.
this is an example of a daydream.

*Critiquing a speaker or work of art

*Preparing ourselves before facing an audience
*You felt happy while thinking about how your teacher appreciated you for submitting your project
before due date and you reflected on why this was so!

2. Interpersonal Communication
A. Dyadic
It occurs when two people are conversing directly to one another.
Examples:
 A husband and wife
 a parent and child
 a job interviewer and the interviewee
*You provided comfort to a friend who was feeling
*a police interrogator and a suspect,
*two people on a date, a beggar
*a passerby, two partners in a business
*You offered feedback on speech performance of your classmate
*You provided comfort to a friend who was not feeling well feeling
Consulting with the guidance counsellor for assistance in choosing a course for college

B. Small Group
It occurs when three or more (usually up to 12) people engage in face-to-face interaction to
achieve a desired goal.
Examples:
 Meeting with other officers in an organization
 Brainstorming with your classmates.
.This type of speech context is common inside the classroom. Why? is it
important to be involved in small group because sharing your thoughts and
ideas with your group members builds good communication, creativity, critical
thinking, and you will value the ideas of others, and that means you are
cooperative. In conclusion, This type of Interpersonal Communication is
intended for studying an issue and coming up with a solution

In this type of interpersonal communication, all participants can freely share

their ideas in a loose and open discussion.

*You are participating in an organizational meeting which aims to address the

concerns of your students
 You are having a discussion with your groupmates on how to finish the
assigned tasks

3. Public Communication
It occurs when a person delivers a speech in a public setting.

Examples:
 graduation speeches
 public speaking contests (debate, oratorical contests)
 virtual graduation (new normal)
On this type of Interpersonal Communication, Speaker addresses many Listeners.
Meaning to say,you are required to deliver or send a message before or in front of .a
group
It happens when individuals and groups engage in dialogue in the public in order to
deliver a message to a specific audience.
That is why this type of communication is considered as the heart of the economy,
society, and politics. Politicians use this to get elected and even business people show
it to show their image

4. Mass Communication
This refers to communication that takes place through television, radio, newspapers,
magazines,books, billboards, internet, and other types of media.
Examples:
 You are a student journalist articulating your stand on current issues through the
school newspaper.
 Listening to a daily podcast before bedtime.
This communication is carried out with the aid of media technology.
So many people are involved in mass communication. Posting a public post in
facebook can be seen by thousands of people. That's why we have to think before we
click and we should know virtual etiquette so that you will not be accused of cyber
crime.
