TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXT


SPEECH CONTEXT
ACCORDING TO DEVITO (2005)

“Context refers to the setting in which the communication


takes place. Context helps to establish meaning and can
influence what is said and how it is said.”
Read and carefully evaluate the statements:

INTRAPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION
This refers to a type of communication that is focused on one Person.

THE BRAIN
OF THE SPEAKER
Refers to something occurring within the individual mind or self.

The channel of communication for intrapersonal communication is the brain of the speaker that
processes his or her thought or feelings.
Example:

1. When you talked to yourself in the mirror?

2. When you are day dreaming;

3. and lastly when you are talking or telling yourself I can Do it


before taking a test or exam.

INTERPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION
This refers to the type of communication that takes
place between and among people and creates a personal
relationship between and among them.

Normally, it includes two
individuals, and it can vary from
casual and very persona to
formal and impersonal.
Types of Interpersonal
Communication
1. Communication that happens between two people.

Examples:
• You consoled your brother who was feeling down.
• A conversation between your father and mother about
the latest announcement of your Barangay Chairman.
DYAD communication
2. Communication that compose at least 3 but not more than
12 people engage in a face-to-face interaction.

Example:
• You are having a discussion with your two
brothers about the surprise party you are planning
Small group communication
for your Mom’s birthday.
PUBLIC
COMMUNICATION
It is a type of speech context that that enables you to send or deliver a message before a crowd.

"In public communication, unlike interpersonal and small groups,


the channels are more exaggerated. The voice is louder and the
gestures are more expansive because the audience is larger”
(Hybels & Weaver, 2012, p 19)
 
Examples:
• Delivering a graduation speech to your fellow graduates.
• You were elected as the new SSG president of your school and were given a chance to deliver a message of gratitude
to your fellow students.

magazines, books, billboards, the

Examples:
• You are watching a televised briefing of IATF on COVID-19.
• You have recorded a commentary for your school’s Online
Discussion of the pandemic and uploaded it in your social media
account.

1. When talking to yourself
Use self-talk to your advantage.
Reminder: do self-talk to encourage and motivates yourself to feel better.

Don’t overdo it
It is better not to over use this type of speech context.
2. When talking to one person or a small group of people
1. Listen Carefully: Needless to say, this is the very basic foundation of effective communication.

“Be an active participant in the process.”

2. Check your tone and body language: non verbal cues are vital in the communication process.

3. When talking to the public


“When talking to a large audience you must come prepared.”

“Be yourself while you are on stage and speak in the way that you will be
easily understood by your audience.”
