What is the drilling fluid additives
• Drilling fluid additives are important materials which enhance
borehole drilling for oil gas and fresh water. These additives are often
composed of solids or liquids which are then mixed with water are
then mixed with water oil or other synthetic liquid to make drilling
mud and Drilling fluid additives have been developed to help improve
performance of drilling operations, especially in challenging ground
conditions. These additives provide many benefits when used while
drilling in sandy soil.
Functions of drilling fluid additives
1. Control the movement of rock cutting
2. Control drilling pressure
3. Lubricate drilling components
4. Maintain well structure and integrity
5. Without effective additives to drilling fluid
6. It will be more difficult to maintain drilling efficiency and well
stability.
What materials are drilling fluids made of
• Its made from tow types of materials
1. Common materials :
Bentonite ,barium ,barite ,calcium carbonate.
2. Engineering materials :
Polymers , sugars and resins.
NOTE :
• When these additives are solids ,it is usually necessary to tightly control the
particle size.
• Partial size is important to help ensure proper mixing with liquids and
maintain proper density under high pressure.
Common materials

Calcium
Bentonite barite barium carbonate
Engineering materials

Polymers resins
Bentonite
• Used for a slight increase in weight and a significant
increase in viscosity
• Have low sand content thus reducing wear on drilling
equipment.
• Provides effective borehole cleanout.
Barite
• Barite increases the hydrostatic pressure of
drilling mud, which makes drilling mud able to
withstand higher pressure during the drilling
process.
Calcium carbonate
• Increases the PH value , making the drilling fluid
more alkaline in to keep the equipment from
corrosion.
Barium sulfate
• Is used to calibrate the density of the fluid and thus the hydrostatic
pressure applied to the reservoir, and its purpose is to prevent
sudden changes in pressure pr the state of blowout during drilling
and to avoid leakage of liquid towards the layer at the same time.
Polymers
• It is used to increase the viscosity of the water-based fluid as it causes
a decrease in the incidence of invasion and an increase in the
hydrostatic pressure which helps us in safer more stable and effective
drilling.
