• This pattern is worked in a continuous spiral without
joining rounds. I recommend placing a stitch marker
309 Soft Fudge
in the last stitch of each round so you don’t lose
325 Spearmint
count of the stitches.
Green
• You can use any yarn for this project, but please
note that the size of the finished piece may vary. I
recommend using one hook size smaller than your
yarn suggests.

• I have included templates for the felt shapes used to

make Bonsly, but please note that these templates
may not be the correct size for you if you are using
different yarn or a different sized hook. You may need
to scale the templates up/down to suit your Bonsly
better. I find looking at a picture of them helps with
this.

• You can sell small quantities of the item made from

this pattern but you must give credit to me as the
original designer of the pattern.

Yarning Under
In this pattern I yarn under instead of over in my single
crochet stitches. This causes the stitches to be tighter and
lean less. This method is completely optional- but here is a
tutorial!

Insert your hook into the desired stitch, then yarn under and
pull through

Yarn under again and pull through both loops. You can tell
that you have yarned under correctly if your stitches look like
‘x’s instead of ‘v’s

Staggered Increases/Decreases
crocheting a ‘perfect’ circle
You may notice that this pattern is formatted differently to others. In
my patterns I stagger my increases and decreases every other round.

But what does this do? You may have noticed when crocheting in
the round that your pieces end up more hexagonal in shape rather
than circular- this is due to all increases being placed at the same
point in every round and ‘stacking’. By offsetting the increases (or
decreases) every other round, the piece ends up much more circular.

Here are two examples. Note- both pieces hold the exact same
number of stitches, and each corresponding round has the same
number of single crochet stitches between increases. The only
change is the position of these increases.

1. 6 sc in MR [6] 1. 6 sc in MR [6]

8. (inc, sc 6) x6 [48] 8. (sc 3, inc, sc 3) x6 [48]

Note: On the rounds which stagger the increases, don’t be

tempted to skip scs! If you look at the corresponding round from
the other piece there are 6 scs between increases- this must
remain the same in order to keep the stitch count correct.

It may be easier to view this round as:

‘sc 3, (inc, sc 6) x5, inc, sc 3’.

Working around a
chain
In this pattern you will be required to create an oval shape by working
around a line of chains. Take a look at the pictures below for some
guidance!

1. First, chain the amount that is listed in the pattern (this

example works with a chain of 5).
2. Beginning in the 2nd ch from hook: sc 3 (into the top
set of loops)

top loops
3. Sc 3 into the last chain

bottom loops

4. Turn your work so that the bottom loops are positioned

on the top.
5. Sc 3 down chains
6. Sc 3 into the last chain

Eyes x2: Yellow

Pupils x2: Black

Mouth: Pink

Assembly
Assembly
1. Sew pupils to centre of eyes as pictured.
2. Copying the pictures below: sew Bonsly’s eyes, mouth and
head spot to body. The eyes sit over rounds 15-20, with 5 stitches
showing between them. The mouth sits over rounds 14/15 in a
frown shape, centrally between the eyes. The head spot sits over
rounds 19-24, also centrally between the eyes.

3. Sew belly rim to body just under the mouth. It sits over rounds
11-14. Begin by sewing the two open ends together (position this
section at the back). Then, sew all the way around the top and
bottom sides of the rim as pictured.

11
Assembly

4. Sew a bush to the top of the body as pictured. Ensure the

bush is positioned centrally.

12
Assembly

5. Sew two branches to the bottom centre of the two other

bushes as pictured. The branches should attach over the last
2 rounds of the bushes. If you haven’t added stuffing to the
branches by this point- add it now! It will help prevent the
bushes from sagging when attaching to the body.

6. Sew branches to either side of the top of body as pictured.

They attach at rounds 32-35. The face should be positioned front
and centre, with the two branches/bushes sitting evenly on
either side.

13
Assembly

7. Sew top of legs to the bottom sides of the body as pictured,

sitting over rounds 3-10. Ensure that the face is positioned
centrally between them.

8. Sew feet to the bottom inner side of the tops of legs. They
should point out forwards. Before sewing them down, ensure
that they both sit flat on the floor when Bonsly is propped
upright.
