Manufactured Vs. Handmade food products; Sto.

Domingo National High School Students’ Preference

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Food industry plays an important role in satisfying community needs with

respect to the availability and quality of foods. To meet the needs of different
consumers, those who sell food products need to adapt their products to fit
the consumers’ needs and wants. (Wedoweti, Singgih, and Gunarta, 2018)

Consequently, DepEd Order 14, s. (2005), "Instruction to Ensure

Consumption of Nutritious and Safe Food in Schools," mandates that every
school must have a school canteen, no matter how small the school and how
modest the canteen.

Due to that mandate, an overview and understanding of consumers’ norms

and guidelines in choosing food to buy are needed. Every school therefore
should ensure safe and nutritious food and that manufactured and handmade
food products being sold inside the school can affect its consumers,
specifically students, positively and negatively. Hence, students need to be
inquisitive when buying food products.

In the study conducted by Wedoweti, Singgih, and Gunarta (2018) they

found out that consumers would always find more in terms of food. People's
food preferences and desires evolve over time. However, their research study
failed to express what product it was that satisfied and filled the needs and
wants of the consumers. Is it food that has been manufactured? Is it
handmade? Or is it both?

Sto. Domingo National High School canteen is offering variety of foods,

including manufactured or processed products such as chickpeas, biscuits,
instant noodles, candies, or hand-made ones like turon, kwek-kwek, lumpia,
kakanin, and more.
In this study, the researchers will find out about the differences between
manufactured and handcrafted food products at Sto. Domingo National High
School and how those differences affect students' purchasing decisions.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the differences between manufactured and

handmade food products and how their differences affect students’
purchasing decisions at Sto. Domingo National High School between the
month of February and March, academic year 2022-2023.
Significance of the study

The findings of the study will benefit the following people differently:

Canteen Vendors/Sellers. This would serve as a guide for them to know

what students at SDNHS like more, so they could change or improve their
products to be more saleable.

Students. They could consider why they prefer manufactured or homemade

food products. And with that, they can ask themselves if their decisions on
buying these products are worthy.

School Canteen Administration. The result of this study could help them
think wisely about how they can improve the quality of foods inside the
school and how these food products could become more profitable.

Future Researchers: This research will be a useful reference for the

researchers who would plan to make any related study precisely the standard
underlying the differences between manufactured and handmade food
products at school.
