• THE LOAD SCHEDULE
The following details can be seen in the schedule of load:
• Number of branch circuit of electrical wiring system
• Number of light outlet, power outlet and switches per branch 5

• Total wattage rating of the load per circuit branch

• Total current load per circuit and size of wire used
• Computation of the total power and current of each circuit branch.
• Size of conduit used for feeder line and branch circuits.

CIRCUITING GUIDELINES
GENERALPURPOSEBRANCH CIRCUITS
30 watts per square meter (3 watts per square foot) for
residential buildings (except porches, garages and basements)
Good practice; load ≤
• 15 amperes circuit (1800 watts) 1,200 watts (40 sqm)
for area up to 60 sqm
• 20 amperes circuit (2400 watts) 1,600 watts (53 sqm)
for area up to 80 sqm

The NEC states that a circuit cannot supply more than 80% of the circuit breakers limits.
This protects the circuit breaker from constantly tripping and protects your home from
electrical failure.

Based on the information above, a 20 amp circuit breaker cannot provide a current of more
that 16 amps (80% of 20 is 16).

If we clarify that further, 16 amps converts to about 3520 watts by using the formula below.

Watts = Amps x 220Volts.

Therefore, we cannot have more than 3520 watts running on a single 20 amp circuit at a
time.

CIRCUITING GUIDELINES
INDIVIDUAL BRANCHCIRCUITS
The code requires that at least
one 20 amperes circuit supply the
laundry outlets.

29

CIRCUITING GUIDELINES
GOOD PRACTICESIN CIRCUITING
 Lighting and receptacles should not be combined in a single circuit.
 Avoid connecting all building lights on a single circuit.
Lighting and receptacles should be supplied with current from at 15

least two circuits.

 Do not allow combination switch and receptacle outlets.
Provide at least one receptacle in the bathroom and one outside the
house. Both must be G.round Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) type
