Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) -

Composting Machine
Objective:
To ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally sound use of the composting machine at the British School
Jakarta.

Responsibilities:
- Every staff member authorised to use the composting machine is responsible for adhering to this SOP.
- The HSE Supervisor will oversee the operation of the composting machine and ensure compliance with this
procedure.

Steps for Use:

1. Initial Preparation:
a. Ensure that the composting machine is placed in a designated area and complies with local
environmental regulations.
b. Check if the machine is in good condition before use. If there are any damages or technical
issues, report them immediately to the HSE Supervisor.
c. Ensure you wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and eye
protection.
2. Preparation of Organic Materials:
a. Ensure that organic materials to be composted (such as food scraps, leaves, or garden waste)
have been separated from non-organic and hazardous materials.
b. Use only suitable organic materials for composting.
c. Avoid mixing materials that are too wet or too dry; strive for a balanced composition.
3. Machine Operation:
a. Start the machine according to the user manual attached to the machine.
b. Carefully load organic materials into the machine according to the recommended capacity.
c. Ensure you follow instructions to set temperature, composting speed, and composting time
according to the type of materials used.
d. Never attempt to touch moving or rotating parts of the machine during operation.
4. Monitoring the Composting Process:
a. During the composting process, regularly monitor the temperature and humidity inside the
machine.
b.Ensure the machine operates within the optimal temperature and humidity range for
composting.
c. If necessary, add organic materials or adjust settings to maintain suitable conditions.
5. Cleaning:
a. After composting is complete, shut down the machine properly.
b. Make sure to clean the machine and the surrounding area from any remaining organic
materials.
c. Ensure the machine is switched off before cleaning.
d. Dispose of finished compost according to recycling or waste processing guidelines in place.
6. Reporting:
If you encounter any technical issues or unusual incidents during the use of the composting machine, report
them immediately to the HSE Supervisor.

Conclusion of Use:
Make sure to properly turn off the composting machine after use and ensure the surrounding area is clean.

Routine Inspection:
Supervisor will conduct routine inspections of the composting machine to ensure it remains in good and safe
working condition.

Work Instructions:
