YEAR 12

AS ART PROJECT. UNIT 1 PORTFOLIO PROJECT.

STILL LIFE.
‘Among the many radical developments in the visual arts during the last hundred
years, one of the most significant has been the extraordinary growth and
transformation of the genre known as still life’
Paul Moorhouse. Tate Modern Handbook.

It is essential that students start this project with pace and focus, and background
research needs to be relevant and extensive. The best portfolios contain work
produced outside lessons and demonstrate an individual and refined approach to
the theme.

Suggested approaches and starting points;

 Interiors and genre scenes. (Domestic or commercial)

 Table top still life.
 Botanical/organic studies.
 Kitchen sink!
 Cultural collection e.g. V&A, Pitt Rivers.(exotic/unusual)
 Illusion (Trompe l’oeil)
 Food. A feast for the eyes
 Reflections, mirrors, shop windows, glass etc
 Studio setting, workshop, shed, or greenhouse.
 “Museum to Myself” Collection. Cf P.Blake at Holburne.

Students will work across a range of processes and techniques, including

drawing, painting, printing, collage and photography.

Key artists that could be researched include;

P. BLAKE. P.CEZANNE. H. MATISSE. G. BRAQUE. P. PICASSO.

P.BONNARD. VAN GOGH. G.MORANDI. G. OKEEFE. F. LEGER.
A. WARHOL. P. CAULFIELD. R. MAGRITTE. J . CHARDIN.
F.DE. ZURBARAN. J. COTAN. W. SCOTT. B. NICHOLSON.
G.SUTHERLAND. C. OLDENBERG. W. THIEBAUD.
J. ROSENQUIST. J. BRATBY.
Key Issues;

1. We are looking for work of quality and refinement . Work must

be pushed through to a finish.
2. Students must take responsibility for looking after their work
e.g. naming it, and keeping the storage drawers and folders
neat and organized.
3. Deadlines issued by staff must be adhered to.
4. We require two distinct outcomes/finished pieces e.g. a finished
painting and a finished print.
5. Artist links and influences are important and good students will
find their own to add to the above list.

There are four Assessment objectives with each one gaining a

possible 20 marks. In order to gain 17 or above (A=65+) the student
must demonstrate;
AO1 A confident and highly developed ability to develop their ideas through
sustained investigations, informed by contextual and other sources.
Demonstrates a high level of analytical and critical understanding and fluency in
using a specialist vocabulary.
AO2 A confident and highly developed ability to experiment with and select
appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes. Reviews
and refines their ideas in an assured manner as their work develops.
AO3 A confident and highly developed ability to record in visual and/or other
forms ideas, observations and insights relevant to their intentions. Demonstrates
an assured ability to reflect on their work and progress.
AO4 A confident and highly developed ability to make a personal, informed and
meaningful response. Demonstrates a highly developed ability to successfully
realize their intentions and where appropriate make connections with other
elements. Work is supported by clear, coherent and accurate use of language.
