Section D : Questions (65 marks)

1. Some scientists have discovered a new planet. They call it ‘New Earth’. The composition of the air in the
atmosphere of New Earth is as follows :

Gas Percentage
Carbon dioxide 15 %
Nitrogen 70 %
Oxygen 7%
Inert gases 8%
Water vapour Variable

(a) Describe experiments, with the expected observations, to compare the amount of the following gases
in the gas jars containing air taken from the atmosphere of the Earth and the New Earth.
(i) oxygen
(ii) carbon dioxide
[2 marks are awarded for effective communication in this part.]
(b) (i) Explain why argon rather than air is used to fill light bulb.
(ii) Give one use of nitrogen.
(9 marks)

2. A can of coca cola shown in the diagram is taken out from a refrigerator. Drops of colourless liquid
appear on the surface of the can after a while.

(a) What is the colourless liquid ?

(b) A student states that the liquid is the coca cola leaked out from the can. Do you agree with his
statement ? Explain.
(c) Suggest a test for the liquid.
(d) The student shakes the can of coca cola and opens the can as shown.
(i) What is the gas that causes the liquid to splash out ?
(ii) Suggest a test for the gas.
(iii) The gas in soft drink is also used in fire extinguisher. Explain why this gas can put out fire.
