mation, in-floor heating, astounding 360-degree views and a much, much more.

There is a brilliant flow to the home that was built around a central staircase. Open, yet
connected, its circular layout clearly delineates a design that creatively separates living
spaces with both visual balance and function. “The owners wanted to be bold in some
areas and understated in others without compromising on curated specialty finishes,
so there is a richness to the living spaces that feels both luxurious and playful at the
same time,” shares Paul Rogers, Vice President of Rescom.

Creating this sense of openness and connectivity amidst cozy, functional spaces
required RLH’s project team to collaborate closely with the design team on how best
to ensure that the structural integrity of the home was not compromised, while afford-
ing each room appealing views of those adjacent. Douglas fir pillars, both within and
without, assist this intention, affording attractive room divisions without obstruction.

Only recently completed, it is not surprising that cost escalations and delays as a result
of global supply chain disruptions and product shortages challenged RLH’s in help-
ing the owners’ source product from around the world, while adhering to their target
expenditure. “We were fortunate that after 43 years of building in the ultra-luxury
market we had these strongly established relationships with both local trade partners
and international vendors, which played such a large role in ensuring that the budget
and schedule were maintained,” admits Paul. “Ultimately, the home was completed in
ten months due to rigorous planning, carefully coordinated deliveries, and incredible
collaboration with our subtrade partners.”

Particular consideration was further given in preserving trees on the property and sure our clients were happy with both the quality of the build and the experience as
building the home with natural materials that would not affront, but complement its a whole. We do not strive to simply meet our sophisticated clients’ expectations—a

“My grandfather had a cabin on this lot back in the ‘40s. That cabin
was well-loved for generations and we wanted our new home to look
like it was nestled in the middle of the woods,” says the homeowner
who admits, “It was a hard decision to tear down the old cabin. But
now we have the same view—just a much better place to enjoy it from.”

Featuring a home of expansive warmth and incomparable charm,

StoneGate Design Build offers a knowledgeable, close knit, and
skilled team of designers, construction managers, and craftsmen that
take pride in the fact that they never build the same home twice. “We
believe that every home should reflect our clients’ personal taste and
benefit their individual lifestyle,” states owner Matt Deweert, who
together with wife Nadine strive to deliver an enjoyable, stress-free,
building experience.

completion. “We had built their home in Lethbridge, so they called
on us,” states Matt, who had never finished a log home before, but
that it sounded like an interesting project. “We were already working
with the neighbor next door—it was a coincidence and helped with
the driving.”

Pioneer Log Homes builds entirely with Western Red Cedar that is
sustainably harvested and sourced throughout the coastal areas of
British Columbia. Providing generational longevity compared to oth-
er common log home species, the tree itself produces a natural fun-
gicide that makes it nearly impervious to rot, and its natural oils also
act as a repellent against wood boring insects. Western Red Cedar’s
low density further affords thermal mass insulation values superior
to most other species. Pre-building the log shell structure in Williams
Lake, they then dismantle it, load it onto trucks, and send their mas-
ter craftsmen to re-assemble it on the client’s foundation.

that complement the log structure with its own personal statement
and a tasteful décor,” shares Matt. With interior design a team effort
shared by the homeowner’s and StoneGate, all walls feature tongue-
and-groove pine that complement interior doors and cabinetry made
of clear alder. “The interior railing was hand-forged and displays a
tree branch design that reflects the setting beautifully,” adds Nadine.

between all team members, StoneGate is committed to smooth and

“They wanted to replace the home they had with a cozy log cottage that
would look as if it had always been there—natural, overgrown, and undis-
turbed,” says Matt of the placement and layout that was greatly influenced
by Waterton’s 1,600-square-foot limitation on new residences. Maximizing
the park standard for livable space, every effort was made to achieve livable
and usable square footage with a design carefully tailored to the client’s
needs that included lake views from every room in the home.

“It was definitely a learning experience working with a log structure. Every-
thing you do has to accommodate for shrinkage, so we included slip details
that enabled the logs to shrink without damaging the interior walls and fin-
ishes,” explains Matt. Featuring triple-pane windows, the hydronic boiler
system affords in-floor heat and cooled floor surfaces in the summer months
for year-round comfort. All exterior decks and patios further share snow
melt systems, which also protect the logs from excessive moisture.

Climbing to vaulted heights that top twenty-feet, the

A balance of log features, generous windows, and sweep-

ing rooflines bring the lakefront to life. The custom
designed wrought iron railing adds charm amidst a host of
copper downpipes, door and window flashings, and eaves
troughs, adding authentic appeal to this timeless style.

Western Red Cedar hosts a rugged and warm décor that

engages a massive display of giant features within the
open-concept main living area. Tongue-and-groove pine
walls and ceilings complement the log structure that hosts
a charming overlook that boasts a custom designed steel
railing with thematic style.

“Pioneer was very particular in their log selection. Some even had an
almost story-book appeal—large and misshapen character pieces that are a
lot more work, but express craftsmanship at another level,” admits Matt of
the hand-hewn log finish. “Each log was tightly fitted, which is remarkable
given their non-conformity.”

“Working with StoneGate was effortless, they were exceptional at guiding us in

this process and always presented options that made our choices easier,” agree
the homeowners. “Potentially, we could have been overwhelmed, but instead
had lots of laughs as they made it enjoyable. We traveled together often to see
many things and they showed us what would make the difference.”

neer team assembled in three days. “After that, every-
thing else was StoneGate. There were a lot of decisions

we had the right team,” affirms the homeowner.

“They couldn’t wait to move in, and although built as

a vacation property, didn’t leave for over a year,” Matt
fondly recalls of the experience and his clients whose
well-formed vision had finally unfolded. “We were
very happy to be part of that.”

Growing bigger and better with every year, Marvel Cabinetry & Renova-
tions takes the guesswork out of a design, instilling confidence and integrity
with every project. Located on an acreage just south of Calgary, their recent
expansion now hosts nearly 10,000 square feet of production facility.

Lead by Jesse Boyetchko, his team of talented and dedicated staff offers
each client the guidance and expertise demanded at this level of produc-
tion that is enhanced by exacting standards and on-line management tools.
Providing 3D digital designs that represent their client’s vision, they focus on
everything from cabinetry and millwork for whole-home renovations to the
smallest hardware details.

Their journey as a team has been swift and exciting, studded with celebrity
projects and the celebrities themselves. In just ten short years Marvel has
created cabinetry for some of Hollywood’s elite as well as working with
notable HGTV celebrities such as Jonathan and Drew Scott and leading
designer Victoria Tonelli, bringing desirable cabinetry designs to life through-
out North American.

An open-faced, tall cabinet hosts custom stained floating walnut shelves

with bead board backing and integrated puck lighting complete with vintage
gallery rails with brass end posts. A roll out shelf hosts a charger station.

“These HGTV projects show that we can bring a calibre of craftsmanship

that can be recognized internationally, but the heartbeat of our company
is our core team who shows up to win every day. Our immediate and sur-
rounding community has been amazing over the last 10 years, and the support
we’ve received locally has enabled our company to flourish,” admits Jesse.

Currently, the renovation industry has taken a bit of an odd turn. Jesse ex-
plains, “For various reasons, there has been a rise in projects that have not
been completed with Marvel being recognized as one of the more solid com-
panies to be called upon to finish the work that others couldn’t.” This ren-
ovation in Aspen Estates was for a client who needed someone they could
rely on after a disappointing experience in their original renovation phase.

“It was very important to us to find a contractor who could commit to time-
lines and followed schedules so we knew when the trades were coming and
going and could plan around that, as we stayed in our home during the
renovation,” says the client.

Vented drawers reveal custom mesh details with additional custom shelv-
ing, glazed ceramic tile, and a built in microwave behind the custom walnut
pantry door with glass inserts and matte black hardware. A tightly grooved
and reeded panel features LED lighting recessed in an aluminum channel.

Impressed by Marvel’s up front attitude towards budgets and

schedules, she adds, “We went in with our eyes wide open and
new exactly what to expect with Marvel. There were no surprises.
The other renovator we met with didn’t even follow up.”

Wanting a new kitchen that would capture a classic and timeless

style with unique features and a built-in for the basement, Jesse
adds, “The homeowner not only liked our references, but also
appreciated our transparency and fluid planning process. All of
our projects are managed online through our project software
that the client has access to. Everything is there along with daily
updates that can be viewed in real time, which is convenient for
clients who may be traveling.”

Marvel consistently captures creative features, such as the

uniquely crafted hood fan and an integrated flatscreen above the
fridge that was built into a door panel. The grooved, skinny rail
door panels on the back of the island are repeated in the pantry
and the brass work on the shelves all combine to enhance a décor
that offers quality and individual appeal. Even the lighting is
customized and selected to enhance décor features.

Featuring a design by Kim Purvis of Aurora Décor, Kim states,

“The clients wanted a refined, high-end feel to their home that

With the cabinetry well-equipped for multiple functions, it includes

pull out recycle bins with a paper towel holder, two pull out spice
racks, a unique phone charger tray, as well as a full complement of
deep drawers and storage spaces.

“The basement built-in was not user-friendly when we bought the

home. We wanted a dry bar that would act as a serving area and
also somewhere to display our wine,” shares the client. “So we
removed it all and kept the fireplace.” Engagement was a key con-
sideration in their renovation, desiring hospitable function and a
style that they could call their own.

“The pantry was open-shelved and messy looking and I prefer that
everything has its own place and is tucked away. Now I can also use
it as an office nook and when we entertain it makes a great bar prep
area as well. It’s one of my favourite spaces because of the extra
detailing done and is now more of an extension of the kitchen than
just pantry space.”

After three months, the renovation was completed

on time, on budget, and of the highest quality.
“The entire process was seamless and the small
adjustments we encountered along the way did
not affect timelines. At Marvel its all hands on
deck and we have the resources and skill sets to
make it all happen,” says Adam, Marvel’s Con-
struction Project Manager.

Appreciative of a great relationship that gave them

more than they hoped for, the client continues, “I
had my doubts and was cautious due to our last
experience, but I couldn’t have asked more of Mar-
vel. Every renovation will have its bumps, but we
were impressed with how they dealt with clarify-
ing finer details as they arose and didn’t accept
less than an excellent result,” shares the client.
“Truly, we couldn’t be happier with how it turned
out. Often, I just sit at my island and look at it. It
makes me happy.”

Touched by the client’s reaction to their efforts,

Jesse adds, “It was great to have a client’s faith
restored in the industry. I just want to say that there
are still good companies out there who do care.”

Perfectly placed between the majestic veiwscapes of the
Rocky Mountains and the bustling energy of Calgary, Mon-
Terra on Cochrane Lakes provides balance and the room to
breathe—a place where one can enjoy the benefits of both
without sacrifice.

Located just five kilometres north of Cochrane along

Highway 22, MonTerra is a picturesque 20-minute drive
to Calgary and an easy 40-minute commute to the down-
town core. “We are only an hour from Banff and about half
that to Canmore and Kananaskis country,” states Patrick
McFetridge, who is one of the Principal’s of the develop-
er, Enright Capital. Designed to provide family-friendly,
estate-style living that offers incredible vistas, it would
appear that MonTerra has something for everyone.

Amidst amenity-filled parks, developed walkways/paths,

and a view-swept country setting with outside ameni-
ties just minutes away, MonTerra draws young and new
families, couples, and emerging empty nesters with its nat-
ural, broad-based appeal. Hosting two new parks, the com-
munity promotes activity and engagement within its design.

“The new community pavilion and parks are ideal for

neighbourhood and family gatherings with expansive
mountain views offering a tranquil setting for leisurely
strolls,” shares Patrick, along with its numerous walking
and cycling trails that wind along Cochrane Lake and the
East water reservoir. A Crown-protected lake, its peaceful
and cooling shores provide a welcome boon in the summer.
Abundant green space throughout the community and an
adjacent nature reserve completes a very pretty picture.

Vastly unique in the size of their lots, MonTerra offers

on average 80-foot frontages, featuring 12,000 square
feet of generous spaces than can satisfy all lifestyles.
“Estate lots in Calgary are typically 45-feet wide, which
can accommodate a double front garage style home,” notes
Patrick. “Here, you can fit two city estate lots in what we
can provide for around $260,000.”

Perhaps as appealing as its natural setting, what further

sets MonTerra apart is its streetscapes that enhance the
spirit of community, host curb appeal, and build value for
homeowners. Governed by architectural guidelines and
principles that are more inspirational than prescriptive, the
styles represented provide a solid benchmark with which
to develop a design and allow for individual creativity.
Designed and built by a select group of exceptional builders,
they offer uniquely custom solutions that encourage and
maintain the integrity of MonTerra.

Nestled and at home within the peaks and valleys of its treed land-

“They know our expectations and we know the quality of their work.
At times, they are consultants and always consistent in their quality

Having arrived with a design in hand, the plan was quite specific. “We
were very excited to work with it as it was very detailed and she was
so invested. This is their forever home and we had a lot of fun sourcing

Swedish Door West

People often think that building their dream kitchen requires a big budget.
A custom kitchen with high-end materials and finishes can easily cost $50,000
or more, but what they may not realize is that great options exist at a fraction
of the price.

“At Swedish Door West, we deliver significant cost savings by combining premium
cabinet doors and quality finishes with IKEA cabinets for a truly custom look and
feel,” asserts Swedish Door West owner David Boudreau. “We deliver the custom
kitchen without the custom price.”

Wanting an investment property that they could love themselves, this clever couple
opted to blend the two in their vision of home. “We rented out the old house that
was on the lot when we were in Europe where we were in awe of the architecture,”
they agree. Narrowing their focus to the look and feel of French Chateau features,
they began to research the style and the restrictions that would affect their build.

Adding a laneway home for in-laws was an option available and made sense as
they supported multi-generational living and keeping the family close. “We have
a large extended family and wanted a bright, open-concept home that could host
about 40 people,” share the owners. The laneway home features an open-concept
main level as well with an upstairs bedroom. “We then added a basement suite
with a separate entrance for rental income, and perhaps for our daughter when
she is older. Here, it’s common to maximize occupancy and we positioned all the
entrances to provide privacy and separation.”

with the main floor deck hosting wide bleacher-style stairs that extend flows to the
outdoors. The kitchen and dining area enjoy oversized windows that capture land-
scape and laneway views.

“We incorporated the French Chateau features that we could—the look has quite a
few identifying elements—but knew if we went full out, the city would push back,”
recalls Rey. Yet while that level of detail pushed beyond the young family’s budget,
they successfully achieved the look and feel of Classic European character.

Also trying to find that contextual balance with the materials made available, the in-
terior was rarified and modernized. “It shows youth and simplicity plus they didn’t
want it to appear trendy, but instead incorporate the best of what that style offers with
a timeless design of complementary appeal,” adds Rey. “I love the interiors. It’s a lot
more spare, but I like how it reflects their personality. They like the simplicity of it and
it shows very well how they plan to live in the home.”

Replete with its own unique and innovative features, they opted to apply a micro

VICOSTONE
A global manufacturer of quartz stone that offers lasting beauty, incredible
selection, and incomparable value, VICOSTONE provides features and
benefits that makes it the preferred choice. “Stone is one of the best ways to add
beauty, lustre, and a focal point in any kitchen design,” shares Laura Vanhoutte
of VICOSTONE Canada where quartz offers a definite advantage.

Unlike most quartz, VICOSTONE quartz-based engineered stones are

produced from about 93% pure natural quartz aggregates, which are adhered
with polymer resin and color powder, providing a hardness and flexural strength
which is much higher than natural stone and some other engineered stones.
Hosting its own luxurious beauty, VICOSTONE compound stones are
widely used as in kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, wall paneling, and
floor surfaces.

With a warehouse in Calgary and show rooms in both Calgary and Edmonton,
VICOSTONE offers easy access, inventory, and pricing that enhance projects
at every budget. “We offer aggressive pricing at each product range and that,
combined with our extremely large selection, affords all-encompassing design
possibilities,” affirms Laura.

“Our Half-Slab Program allows one to purchase just that—a partial slab that
is ideal for smaller projects such a kitchen perimeters or vanities, even office
spaces,” she shares. The result is less waste with maximized usage. It also allows
one to purchase a better quality stone for the same money as you only pay for
what you use.

Aesthetic diversity is also a VICOSTONE advantage. “What sets us apart is

our product range. We have quartz that resembles concrete for industrial and
modern applications and focus on creating products that come very close to
the natural look of stone,” she states. That includes bold colours like bright
reds and blues—ideal for commercial projects or homeowners drawn to bold
designs. Also offering finishes much like granite that include textured or honed
surfaces, these options add interest and texture to any décor.

Currently, their best selling product is Verdelia, a sand/grey-toned quartz

with white veining and aqua jeweled accents—beautiful and extremely
versatile in its look and style. “Almost all people who come to quartz
want the look of stone, but don’t want the maintenance. They’ve had
the natural stone and now seek a more durable option that is moisture
and stain resistant and will look the same many years later as the day it
was installed.”
