1) Read the passage given below and use your skills of inferencing and predicting to choose the
correct answers:
It is not possible to imagine ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ without the influence of Marlon
Brando, the actor who rose to fame playing Stanley Kowalski. On the page, the part is fairly
simplistic. Stanley is a monster and a beast without any redeeming qualities. But Brando and the
play’s original director, Elia Kazan, imagined the character as having a soft underbelly, rooted in his
own sorrow, insecurities, and soulful complexity. Brando’s Stanley is a brute, yes, but he is a brute
who hates the fact that he is so awful. He is also unable to control himself and his passions, and
this lack of control is equally embarrassing to him, even as it is also threatening to Blanche and
alluringto her sister Stella.
For instance, after he hits Stella, he comes back to her, famously begging for forgiveness by
shouting “Stella” outside their apartment. But in Brando’s depiction on the stage and later on the
screen, he is soaked from the rain and looks completely desperate, as though he needs Stella to
live. He looks and seems totally helpless and weak, the exact opposite of the brute he appears later
when he forces himself onto Blanche.
The play is excellent and memorable, even when read. But it is Brando’s interpretation of the
male lead role that makes the play indelible. Without Brando, the play would still have a deep
meaning, but with Brando’s interpretation, the play becomes even more profound.
1) Paragraph 1 of the above passage can refer to each of the following except:
2) It can be inferred from the above passage that ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’
a. was Tennessee Williams’ first play
b. is better on stage than in print
c. did not have socialist leanings
d. was not melodramatic
e. would not have been successful without Marlon Brando
a. The New York theater scene was blown away by ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’.
b. Tennessee Williams wrote ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ to end melodrama.
c. ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ has no true meaning.
d. ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ only has power when performed on the stage.
e. e. The character of Stanley Kowlaski has been made more complex through Brando’s
portrayal.
2.Read the following article and prepare an outline of the text. Use only the main ideas from the
article in your outline. (10 marks)
The entire world is experiencing the desolation and devastation of a deadly virus, the new
disease of COVID-19, emerging from the new coronavirus SARS- CoV 2, has spread
throughout the world, affecting more than 200 countries and hundreds of people, with
discouraging morbidity and mortality figures.
All this started at the end of December 2019, specifically on the 31st, where the Chinese
Disease Control Center reported 27 cases of patients with pneumonia of uncertain etiology and
who had in common a Hunan seafood market that it lacked sanitary measures, warning of a
possible zoonosis.
On January 7 its causal agent was identified, which was a coronavirus and it was called
with the name of the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The researchers delimited the 2019-
nCoV sequence with that of other viruses through a database of genetic sequences,
discovering that the most related were two viruses of Chiroptera origin as indicated by their
scientific name (bats), (bat-SL -CoVZC45 and bat-SLCoVZXC21). However, their similarities
were less than 90%, therefore, it was suggested that there was the possibility that there was
another animal reservoir that acted as an intermediary between bats and humans. On
February 11, the WHO coined the name SARS-CoV 2 and until March 11 it was declared by
the same entity as a pandemic.
The clinical picture of patients with COVID-19 has a pattern of respiratory dominance
and depends on the tropism of the virus towards the target organs of the body, because
SARSCoV- 2 uses the ACE-2 receptor for its entry into the host cell. The virus binds ACE-2 with an
affinity 10-20 times greater than SARS-CoV. This receptor is highly expressed in multiple
body tissues, including lung, gastrointestinal, kidney and cardiac tissue, explaining the
symptoms present in the prodrome of the disease.

The novel corona virus has given rise to a global pandemic that has destabilized most
institutional settings. While we live in times when humankind possesses the most
advanced science and technology, a virus invisible to the naked eye has massively
disrupted our lives, economies, healthcare, and education systems worldwide.
Given the corona virus’s current situation, some households have also had time to
introspect on gender roles and stereotypes. For instance, women are expected to carry
out household chores like cooking, cleaning, and looking after the family. With men
sharing household chores responsibilities during the lockdown period, it gives hope that
they will realize the burden that women have been bearing and will continue sharing such
responsibilities.
This tough period also gave people some time to reflect on the importance of keeping
themselves fit. With sufficient time in hand, people started investing their time learning
new ways to exercise. Those who never exercised before, giving excuses of busy lives, too
developed some new habits of Yoga, Pranayam andexercises during the lockdown period.
These new habits and people’s increased focus on their health, wellness and immunity
will surely change the way we lead our lives even in future. The nature too healed itself
during the lockdown period. Restricted human movement led to better air quality,
cleaner water bodies and joyful wildlife movements. The human beings, we hope,
reflected during this time, how some of their unconscious activities cause disruption in
nature and worked out ways to adopt environmental-friendly options for their activities
in future.
i. The outbreak of COVID-19 is called a pandemic because-
(a) it has spread across the globe.
(b) it has spread across India
