KUPANG REGENCY

1. GEOGRAPHY
Kupang regency is
located at the edge of Kupang
Bay, geographically bordered
with TTS regency in the north
and east, Timor Sea in the south
and Sawu Sea in the west. This
regency covers the area of 7.338
km2. The topography of this
Kupang regency in map regency is rocky and quite close
to the sea.
2. CLIMATE
Kupang regency has tropical climate with two seasons, they are rainy
season from November until March and the rest of the year is dry season. The
temperature of this regency is quite high, that is between 22º to 25º in Celcius.

3. GOVERNMENT
Kupang is the capital city
of both East Nusa Tenggara
Province and Kupang Regency.
The area of 7.338 km2 of Kupang
regency comprises 275 villages.
Another area that is still in
Kupang regency’s management
is Sawu island which is located in
Governor office in Kupang the most southern separated from
Timor Island, where Kupang lies.
All government activities for Kupang regency and East Nusa Tenggara
Province are centered in Kupang. So, Kupang has two leaders in this area,
they are the Governor who leads East Nusa Tenggara Province and the Regent
who leads Kupang Regency.

4. LIVELIHOOD
Being in the capital city of two regions, which are Kupang Regency
and the Capital city of East Nusa Tenggara province, some people of Kupang
regency are working as government officer. Besides, there is also another way
of live earning such as dry-land and wet-land farming which can be found in
several parts of Kupang regency. The way of farming is starting to look better
because the use modern tools to cultivate their fields.

5. SOCIAL STRATIFICATION
The people living in the regency are of great variety. The Helong tribes
have the distinction of being the first inhabitants of Kupang town. After them,
come the Timorese people who are member of Dawan ethnic group. Because
consisting of variety people, Social stratification in this regency no so obvious.

6. RELIGIOUS SYSTEM
Most of Kupang
regency people are Christian, and
then followed by Catholics,
Moslems, Hindus and Buddhist.
Close relationship between the
followers of each religion can be
seen obviously in this regency.

7. CULTURE AND LANGUAGE


The language that is commonly used in this regency is the Kupang
Malay. Another language that is spoken in this regency is Helong, which is
spoken with two variations: Helong Welaun and Helong Tetun in the West
Kupang. Mixing culture can be seen in this regency, because the people who
live in Kupang come from every part of the East Nusa Tenggara province;
from Flores, Alor, Rote, Sumba, Timor and Sawu.

8. ART ACTIVITIES
Art activities that are still can be seen in
this regency is the Ikat weaving which is come
from Rote Island and Sawu Island, with the motif
or pattern that is influenced by Timorese motif.
The people’s housing program however has
adopted a more modern style. Another
government building adopted the form of Sumba
traditional house which has high roof top,
including the regent’s office in Kupang city.

9. SPECIAL EVENTS
There are several special events in Kupang regency which are usually
interesting and make all Kupang people compete to take part in them. Such as:
a. Sail Indonesia
Sail Indonesia is an International yacht rally performed in July
every year and participated by a large number of countries from all over
the world.
b. Development Fair and Celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day
This is an annual event which is usually celebrated in Fatululi
promotion ground in Kupang city, participated by most social sectors,
business world as well as government offices from all
regencies/municipalities all over East Nusa Tenggara province, where
various products as the result of the government’s development programs
are exposed. This event is usually celebrated after or along the Indonesian
Independence Day on August, every year.

c. Fishing Tournament
The fishing tournament takes place in Tablolong bay, where there
is a tourism object called Tablolong beach. This event is usually held on
Octobe every year and participated by participants from Indonesia and also
overseas. This event is usually held on October

d. East Nusa Tenggara Province Anniversary Celebration
East Nusa Tenggara Province Anniversary Celebration is
celebrated on December every year and takes place in Fatululi promotion
area. In this celebration, all regency from NTT performs their arts,
painting and also completed with some kinds of exhibition.

10. TOURISM OBJECT


a. Lasiana Beach
Lasiana beach is in Lasiana village, Kelapa Lima Sub-district. It is
about 12 km to the east of Kupang City. It is a white sand beach with calm
water; coconut leaves waving and fascinating shadow of palm trees. There,
while enjoying the sweet coconut water and sweet palm sugar, fragrant
roasted-corn, baked-banana and ice young coconut with original sweet
palm sugar are also delicious to enjoy.
In Lasiana Beach, recreation, such as fishing, swimming, bathing,
football, karaoke, and other entertainments can be carried out. Lasiana is
located at the main transportation lane of Timor Island and it is always
supplied by highly intensity of public transportation, ojeg (motorcycle
used for public transportation) or by the rent vehicle. It has Home Stay and
Restaurant already that can serve the needs of tourist. It also has
swimming pool for children and a place for shower after bathing and
swimming in the sea.
b. Hero Monument
A historical monument, in the front of which the five principles of
the Pancasila is attached, gives an evidence how persevere and brave the
Timorese were in struggling against the colonialization of Dutch and
japan. This monument is located exactly at the central of Kupang
downtown, at the Koepan beach lane and Concordia fortress of Dutch
which is now placed by Battalion Infantry 743 Kupang.
c. Flobamora Beach
Flobamora Beach is located at Kelapa Lima beach at the main road
of Timor through which internal and external public transportation passed
in high intensity. The beach has long and clear white sand with leafy trees
that give coolness by the fresh sea breeze. Flobamora beach is fascinating
to enjoy at daytime and nighttime because available facilities are supplied.

Flobamora Mall
constitutes the cheapest and
the most complete shopping
center in Kupang downtown,
even in East Nusa Tenggara
Province. There are various
services to enjoy, as variety
of foods, children toys,
Flobamora Mall Ltd. fitness, billiard, karaoke,
dancing and various activities
either shopping or just for fun. There are farmers’ green vegetables plant
around the mall is also interesting to enjoy. The vegetables form to supply
to fulfill the vegetables needs in Kupang downtown.
e. Regional Museum of East Nusa Tenggara

municipality with variety of
ethnics and culture that have
relation to each other because

Nusa Tenggara has 22 ethnic
groups with various customs and traditions including China, India, Bugis,
Makasar, Java, Portuguese, Dutch, Japan, and other European countries
who come to east Nusa Tenggara about 15th century. The regional museum
of East Nusa Tenggara is located at El Tari 2 highway Kota Baru with
high intensity, as it is in the main transportation lane of public
transportation line from Kupang downtown to Kota Baru. This museum
has collected 6.199 historical heritance that are classified into 10 types.
They are: Archeological, Geological, Geographical, Ethnographical,
Biological, Historical, Keramological, Nurismatical-Heraldically, Exterior
art, Philological, and Technological or Industry.

f. Ketapang Satu Beach

is situated in the middle of
Kupang downtown, exactly at
Jln. Sumatera, in front of
Maya Hotel and Pantai Timor
Hotel. This resort is shaded
by the leafy Almond Tree
giving cool weather in the
Ketapang Satu Beach daytime for visitors who are
enjoying the pounding of surf
that caught up with rocks. When low tide, the visitors can enjoy the
beautiful white sand by sun-bathing and relaxing. People are crazy about
this place; they are used to enjoying the sunset and the light of full moon at
night.
g. Hollywood Kupang
Hollywood Kupang is a parking lot exactly in front of the official
house of the Kupang regent. In this place the natural scenery of Kupang
downtown is very interesting at night by the light of state electricity
enterprise. The view is more fascinating with the light of fish platform of
fishermen fishing at Kupang bay. At this place, the natural scenery is more
interesting on the daytime by the blue sea and swaying coconut leaves as if
they are happy to enjoy the beautiful scenery, too.

Kupang city can be
reached by any means of
transportation. By air
transportation, the visitors
can take the flight from
Soekarno-Hatta airport
(Jakarta) through the route
Jakarta-Surabaya-Kupang.

This travel is offered by Batavia Airlines, Merpati Airlines, Lion
Air, etc. Another lane to get to this city is from Ngurah Rai Airport
(Denpasar) with direct flight to Kupang offered by Merpati Airlines. Sea
transportation by Awu Ship which is offered by PELNI through the route
of Jakarta-Surabaya-Bali-Kupang.
