Should Cell Phone Use Be California

In Decline
After Decades Of Historic
Growth, California Switching To
A Period Of Chronic Stagnation
By Dan Walters, CalMatters
CALIFORNIA — From its founding 173 years
ago, California’s history has been dominated by
one word: growth.
Its population grew from a few thousand to
nearly 40 million, becoming by far the nation’s
most populous state. Its economy grew to $3.6 tril-
lion, the fourth largest in the world, and its $310.8

But that was then and this is now. California’s in-
dices of growth have hit a plateau.
The state’s population has been drifting down-
ward for several years, and the state Department of
Finance recently projected that it will remain vir-
tually unchanged at just under 40 million at least
until 2060 – a radical change from earlier predic-
tions that it would top 50 million by then.
The state’s labor force is likewise stagnant, ac-

T he words “For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People” stretch across the
northern entrance of our nation’s first national park, Yellowstone.
According to the Department of Interior, the goal of the National Park Serv-
ice is, and has always been, to keep our wild places protected and unimpaired
for future generations. To that end, more than 400 areas and 84 million acres
spanning all 50 states and several unincorporated territories of the United
States, protect America’s greatest natural treasures. With 61 of those wilderness
areas toting National Park designation, it can be tricky trying to pick which
()#")' !%()&$)'( park to visit.
So, to help you determine which parks should be higher on your bucket list,
we ranked each park based on their overall accessibility, facilities and accom-
modations, trails and attractions, crowds, and, of course, overall ‘wow’ factor,
which we measured by photo ops and stunning scenery.
Keep in mind, it’s almost impossible to say that one is better than the next —
there’s truly something special about each one of our national parks.

Estimated At $300K factor in the state’s projection of stagnant tax revenues. The state’s tax system
is inordinately dependent on taxing the incomes of the state’s most affluent
residents. The highest income 1% of Californians generate nearly half of in-
come taxes, which are the lion’s share of overall revenues.
A fierce debate has raged in academic and political circles over whether
there has been a significant flight of wealthy taxpayers from the state as mar-
ginal tax rates rose and the federal government sharply restricted their ability
to deduct state taxes on the federal tax returns – the latter an issue now raging
in Congress.
The debate gained new fodder recently when SmartAsset, a website de-
voted to economic issues, revealed that California and New York have the
highest out-migration rates of taxpayers with incomes over $200,000 a year.
The SmartAsset study, based on federal tax return data, found that in 2021,
California had a net loss of 27,341 high-income taxpayers, a 42% increase
from the outflow in 2020. California’s loss was the nation’s highest and Flor-
ida and Texas, neither of which has an income tax, were the major gainers.
It’s reasonable to assume that the flight from California contributes in some
measure to the state’s projection of stagnating tax revenues and ongoing def-
icits.

Lisa Fonssagrives
On The Eiffel Tower, 1939
The answer is "She was the world's first supermodel." Who is Lisa Fons-
sagrives?
Lisa Fonssagrives is the woman posing on the Eiffel Tower for Vogue
magazine in 1939. The shot was taken by Erwin Blumenfeld, and Fonssa-
grives was reportedly not secured in any way. But if it's news to you that
Lisa Fonssagrives was the first supermodel, that's ok.
Fonssagrives was born Lisa Bernstone in Sweden in 1911 and embarked
on a promising career in dance before switching to fashion modeling. She's
called the first supermodel because she was the dominant model in the in-
dustry. As Time described her in a 1949 article headlined "Billion Dollar
Baby," she was "the highest-paid, highest-praised high-fashion model in

put into the cases at the time and amateur sleuths do afterward,

police an alibi. In still others, the only reason that witnesses aren't

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured a

tightly bound pair of actively forming stars, known as
Herbig-Haro 46/47, in high-resolution near-infrared light.
Look for them at the center of the red diffraction spikes,
appearing as an orange-white splotch.

The stars, captured in near-infrared light, are known

as Herbig-Haro 46/47 and are buried in a disk of gas
and dust.
Located just 1,470 light-years from Earth in the
Vela Constellation, the object is just a few thousand
years old. Over millions of years, NASA says, the

stars will fully form.

The James Webb Space Telescope during assembly

Nov. 2, 2016, at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in
Greenbelt, Maryland.

"It is probably a distant galaxy, or potentially inter-

acting galaxies (their interactions may have caused
the distorted question mark-shape)," representatives
of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI),
which manages Webb's science operations, told
Space.com.
According to the institute, the object's reddish hue
in the image indicates that the object is quite distant.
"This may be the first time we've seen this particu-
lar object," it added. "Additional follow-up would be
required to figure out what it is with any certainty.
Webb is showing us many new, distant galaxies – so
there's a lot of new science to be done!"
Matt Caplan, an assistant professor of physics at Il-
linois State University, also told Space.com that the
object might be two galaxies merging – although not-
ing that there are plenty of additional possibilities.

Monster (2003)
Charlize Theron is nearly unrecognizable on screen in her role as Florida prostitute turned
serial killer, Aileen Wuornos in Monster. The biographical drama follows the troubled
woman along in her endeavors as she’s beaten, battered and bruised to a point that turns her
into a killer. It's a tragic story that raises questions about the American justice system and
the treatment of women.
Aside from following her abuse and string of murders, it tells the tale of her falling in
love with another woman, played by Christina Ricci. Wuornos was ultimately executed by
the state of Florida for her crimes, while Theron received an Oscar for her performance in
the role.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Leonardo DiCaprio, who also helped to produce the movie, stars in this 2013 production
as stockbroker, Jordan Belfort. The film follows along to tell the tale of the banker turned
criminal, who got wrapped up in fraud and corruption on Wall Street, leading him down a
dark path that ended behind bars. The real Belfort was involved in some outlandish scenarios
that are eerily close to the way they are depicted in the film.
Margot Robbie plays the conman’s wife, and Jonah Hill costars as his partner and friend.
It grossed nearly $117 million at the box office, and was nominated for five Academy
Awards, including Best Picture, and Best Director for Martin Scorsese’s work on the film.

The Imitation Game (2014)

This historical drama stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, a cryptanalyst who
worked for the British government decrypting German intelligence messages during WWII.
The film follows his endeavors in trying to crack a Nazi code that is regarded to be uncrack-
able. The renowned code-breaking war hero, essentially pioneered considered computer
science and artificial intelligence. As a homosexual, he was also criminally convicted and
faced terrible treatment under U.K.'s homophobic law.
Instead of jail time, he opted for hormone therapy and chemical castration. As the final
screen on the film reveals, however, after a year of therapy, he committed suicide at 41-
years old.
