careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and
safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a
matter of course, be observed.

3.6 Checking hydraulic compensation ele‐

Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Feeler gauges
Test procedure
Note
– Start engine and run until radiator fan has switched on once.
– Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm for 2 minutes (per‐
form road test if necessary).
If the support elements with hydraulic clearance compensation
are still noisy, determine the defective support element as follows:
– Remove cylinder head cover.
– Turn crankshaft until cams of supporting element to be tested
are at top.
– Press the roller rocker fingers downwards with a screwdriver
-arrow-.
If it is possible to insert a feeler gauge of 0.20 mm between cam‐
shaft and roller rocker finger:
– Renewing supporting element; removing camshaft to do so

♦ Only distilled water may be used for mixing with coolant addi‐
tives. Using distilled water ensures optimum protection against
corrosion.
♦ The amount of water used in the coolant mixture has a great
influence on its effectiveness. Since water quality differs from
country to country and even region to region, it is necessary
to set a standard for the quality of water to be used. Distilled
water satisfies all requirements. For this reason, we recom‐
mend using distilled water when mixing coolant for topping up
or replacing coolant.
♦ Use only coolant additives which conform with the ⇒ Elec‐
tronic Parts Catalogue (ETKA) . Other coolant additives may
reduce corrosion protection substantially. The resulting dam‐
age could lead to loss of coolant and subsequent severe
damage to the engine.
♦ The correct coolant solution ratio helps prevent damage from
freezing and corrosion as well as scaling. Moreover, the boil‐
ing temperature is raised. Therefore, the cooling system must
be filled all year round with coolant additive.
♦ Because of its higher boiling point, the coolant improves en‐
gine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with
tropical climates.
♦ The refractometer - T10007A- must be used to determine the
current anti-freeze value.
♦ Frost protection must be guaranteed down to -25°C as a nmin‐

This means that the throttle valve can already be fully open even
though the accelerator is only depressed half way. This has the
advantage of preventing throttling losses at the throttle valve.
After evaluating the torque requirements of various components
(e.g. air conditioning system, automatic gearbox, ABS/ESP), the
engine control unit calculates the optimal throttle valve opening
angle for the respective situation.
This also results in significantly improved consumption and ex‐
haust emission values under certain load conditions.
“EPC” is a system comprising all components which contribute to
determining, controlling or monitoring the position of the throttle
valve, e.g. accelerator position senders, throttle valve control
module, electronic power control warning lamp and engine control
unit.

6.1 Function
Fuel vapour forms above the surface of the fuel in the tank; the
quantity depends upon the air pressure and ambient temperature.
The activated charcoal filter system prevents these HC emissions
escaping to the atmosphere.
In limited quantities, fuel vapours pass from the highest point in
the tank through the gravity valve (which closes at an angle of
45°) and through a pressure retention valve into the activated
charcoal filter.
The activated charcoal stores these vapours like a sponge.
