Introduction

1 INTRODUCTION
This document describes the installation of the SeaSTAR
3510LR Demodulator and the Marine Helix Antenna "Spot Beam
Antenna" supplied by Fugro.
The SearSTAR 3510LR is an L band receiver used as a
demodulator for SeaSTAR DGPS corrections using a compact
dome antenna. It is also used to interface Inmarsat terminals of
B and M type.
The AD430 Fugro Antenna/Filter Combination is a high gain
low noise, dipole antenna. The antenna has a built-in amplifier,
which is phantom powered via the coaxial output lead.
WARNING
The equipment includes high voltage
(110/230VAC).

Note
The guidelines for installation presented here must be regarded
as a base for detailed plans prepared by the installation shipyard.
These plans must include drawings, instructions and procedures
specific to the ship in which the equipment is to be installed.
These drawings must be approved by the local maritime
classification society.

Note
Unless stated otherwise, all installation work and mounting
equipment described in this document is to be performed
by yard/customer personnel. It is the responsibility of the
yard/customer to assure that their installation personnel are
sufficiently qualified, and that proper caution is taken to avoid
injuries or damage to life, health, environment, equipment and
property.

Kongsberg Maritime AS accepts no responsibility for any damage

or injury to the system, ship or personnel caused by drawings,
instructions or procedures not prepared by Kongsberg Maritime.

3 INSTALLATION

3.1 General information

3.1.1 SeaSTAR 3510LR Demodulator

The SeaSTAR 3510LR Demodulator is a small lightweight,
ruggedly built unit used to demodulate (decode) the correction
data received in a compressed format at L-Band The demodulator
is equipped with a enhanced differential solution software.

3.1.2 Marine Helix Antenna "Spot Beam

Antenna"
The Marine Helix Antenna AD430 has been designed to permit
reception of low power satellite transmissions (up to 130 dB)
in areas were reception using general purpose antennas proves
unreliable or in the worst cases impossible. The shaped dipole
antenna element directly feeds a low loss interdigital filter which
in turn feeds a low noise amplifier.

3.2 Location of the units

3.2.1 SeaSTAR 3510LR Demodulator

When used as demodulator in “Spot Beam” system the
demodulator should be located maximum 15m from the DGPS
receiver (RS 232 limitation).
Any other location of these units should be discussed with
Kongsberg Maritime before installing.

3.2.2 Marine Helix Antenna "Spot Beam

Antenna"
Note
The location of the antenna is essential for proper satellite signal
reception. Any deviations from the recommendations stated in
the following might cause degraded position accuracy.

1 You should locate the antenna as high up and freely as

possible. The antenna should be protected from direct
illumination of radar beams and other transmitting antennas
such as INMARSAT-antennas. If the antenna has to be
located close to an INMARSAT Std A or B antenna (less
than 5 meters), avoid placing the antenna so that the
INMARSAT antenna obstructs the clear view of the horizon.
Also make sure that the antenna is not placed directly in

179601/C 9
Kongsberg SeaSTAR 3510LR Demodulator

the transmitting "beam" of the INMARSAT antenna. (The

direction of the transmitting beam will depend on the
geographic latitude the vessel is operating in).
2 The antenna must be located no closer than 3.0 m from
any vertical obstruction, and should have a clear view
of the horizon. Obstructions at longer distances than
approximately 50 m do not adversely affect the signal
reception if the obstruction eclipses no more than a few
degrees of antenna bearing.
3 The base of the antenna must be at least 2.5 m above any
large horizontal reflecting (metallic) surface.
4 The antenna has three M5 fixings designed for use with
the mounting bracket supplied with the antenna. This L
shaped bracket AD316-22 allows easy fitting to vertical or
horizontal poles up to 60 mm in diameter using the M8 V
bolts supplied.
5 The Power Supply location should be adjacent to the
demodulator in order to use the standard cables. For length
of Power Supply cables, refer to section 2.3.

3.3 Logistics
Safety: General safety precautions
should be followed when
working in the Mast or
Electronic Equipment.
Personnel qualifications: Trained mechanical and
electronic workers are
recommended.
Min. no. of personnel: One.
Ship location: No recommendation.
Special tools required: None.

3.4 Handling
Equipment contains delicate electronic components – handle
accordingly.
Equipment can be lifted by hand.

3.5 Mechanical installation

3.5.1 SeaSTAR 3510LR Demodulator
For mechanical installation of the SeaSTAR 3510LR demodulator
refer to drawing number 36200-MD-034 attached in section 4.

Installation

3.5.2 Power Supply

Use Panduit straps or yard/customer supplied U-bracket and
attach the Power Supply to its base.
The power supply connector should also be strapped to the mains
socket to avoid any loss of power. No mounting detail is needed
for this.

3.5.3 Antenna
For mechanical installation of the AD430 Antenna, refer to
Figure 5.

3.6 Electrical installation

3.6.1 SeaSTAR 3510LR Demodulator
Refer to Figure 1 for an overview of the demodulator connections,
and to Figure 2 for identification and location of the connectors
on the rear side of the demodulator.
To perform electrical installation of the demodulator, proceed
as follows:
1 RF: Female TNC-type connector for the coaxial cable to
Spotbeam Antenna.
2 Data and Command Port: 9 pin female D-sub connector
for the RS232/RS422 port that transmits data to the GPS
computer.
The demodulator is delivered with 1 meter data cable.
For pin allocation and layout for data cable connector, refer
to Table 1 and Figure 3.
