Mini Scenario
You have recently been recruited into the role of health and safety advisor for “Clean and Shine”
cleaners, an industrial cleaning company operating across the UK.

The organisation has approximately 500 employees, 450 of whom are employees going into premises
to carry out cleaning jobs. 30 of the remaining workers are sales teams and administration workers
based at the 3 regional depots. The largest depot also houses the head office, where a further 20
people are based including the managing director, contracts manager, finance teams, personnel and
purchasing departments.

You have also been asked by a potential cleaning client to provide a copy of the health and safety
policy. You ask the MD who said that there is nothing like that in the company, that safety
documents are usually just there to “tick a box” anyway. You check the noticeboards and the
company intranet and can’t find a policy, but the contracts manager shows you an old document that
he says he usually sends if clients ask for it – he found it in a file left by the previous manager.

When you look at the policy that he provided, it is as seen below:

Health And Safety Policy

The safety of our employees is our top priority.

Our company will ensure that all employees are aware of their duties to work
safely and to wear their personal protective equipment at all times. Failure to
adhere to our rules will result in disciplinary action.

We will improve the safety of the workers by developing a positive health and
safety culture.

Employees are responsible for carrying out risk assessments and developing safe
working procedures for the tasks that they carry out.

The management will consult with employees via the quarterly health and safety
meetings. Employees are encouraged to highlight concerns via the safety meetings
and minutes will be posted on the notice board and the company intranet.
