Course Description: Hyperbolic Functions. Integration techniques. Improper integrals. Sequences and infinite series. Positive
and alternating series. Power series. Taylor and Maclaurin series. Polar coordinates. Vectors in space.

Course Objectives: Calculus is the main mathematical tool for many fundamental and engineering sciences such as physics,
electronics, computer sciences and so on. The objective of the course is to give students skills of appropriate level for modeling
and solving complicated mathematical problems arising in various natural sciences as well as in electronic and computer sciences.

Course Learning Outcomes: Students, who pass the course satisfactorily:

1. know the definition and identities of hyperbolic functions, evaluate the derivatives and integrals.
2. know several integral techniques, can choose which technique will give the best results when calculating the integral.
3. distinguish improper integrals, evaluate them, or make comments about the convergence,
4. know the concept of infinite sequences and series, is acquainted with the basic concepts of convergence of sequences and
series.
5. know tests used to determine the convergence of series of nonnegative terms, can choose which test will give the best results.
6. have knowledge about alternating series, absolutely and conditionally convergence, power series, interval of convergence,
identifying the functions shown by power series, Taylor and Maclaurin series.
7. know parametric curves, polar coordinates, curves in polar coordinates, can do evaluations such as arc length, area by using
these curves.
8. know vectors, dot and cross products, space curves in 3-dimensional coordinate systems, can write the equations of line and
plane.

Textbook: Thomas’ Calculus, 12th Edition (Early Transcendentals) / Thomas, Weir, Hass,
Addison- Wesley, 2010.

Recommended Readings: Other Calculus books

Lectures: Lectures and problem-solving sessions will be delivered in class (not online). We will use the Blackboard System
(Blackboard -> Announcements) to communicate with you. You should also check your Işık e-mail account on a regular basis.
When you send an email to your instructor you must write your course code and section number beside your name, surname,
and student-number by keeping in mind that your instructor gives some other lectures as well. You are responsible for every
announcement made during class or published in Blackboard. Not attending the class or not following your e-mails regularly is
not an excuse in case you miss something.

Attendance: Isık University Undergraduate Education Regulation requires that each student must attend a minimum 70% of the
class sessions and problem sessions. An absence for any reason will be counted towards the maximum of 30% absences allowed.
Students are going to fail in the class, and cannot take the final exam if they exceed 30% absences. Students are responsible for
tracking their own attendance which will be announced on a regular basis online via the Blackboard. The instructor can refuse
signing of a student or request a declared signature to be invalid if the student is not present during a sufficient portion of the
class.

Homework: Weekly homework will be assigned on the Blackboard system, but neither will be collected nor graded. However,
some homework questions may appear in exams. Also, to understand the material thoroughly, you should work out as many
exercises as possible.

Exams: There will be 2 (two) midterm exam and a final exam which are in-class exams. The classroom in which you are to take
an exam will be determined according to your names and announced in Blackboard. Make sure that you take the exam in the right
classroom. Do not forget to bring your Işık identification card to the exam. You must write your name and your Math1112 row
number on each exam sheet, with a pen. Use a pencil for writing your answers. Dictionaries, calculators, smart watches, and cell
phones are not permitted in any exam.

Make-up: Any student who misses the midterm exam due to a valid excuse will have to provide the relevant document (e.g.,
medical report) within one week. Only these students will be eligible for a make-up exam. The students cannot request a make-up
exam more than once during the semester. It will replace the midterm exam the student has missed. The exact time of make-up
exam will be announced later.

Course Evaluation: At the end of the semester, students are strongly recommended to fill (anonymously) Course Evaluation
Survey using Blackboard for helping the instructor to assess the course and to improve teaching quality. The form includes
questions about instructor, course and student, and takes no more than 8-10 minutes to fill.

Grading: The weights of exams are as follows:

Exams Percent (%) Date

Midterm Exam-1 25 October 31, Tuesday @17:30

Midterm Exam-2 30 December 19, Tuesday @17:30

Final 45% To be announced later by the Student Office

Academic Integrity and Conduct: Each student in this course is expected to abide by the Işık University Code of Honor
(available at http://www.isikun.edu.tr/en/university) and to show due respect to the instructor and the course assistants. Violation
of the integrity principles and any disrespect will not be tolerated.
