History of Psychology
Early Roots
335 BC Greek Philosopher
Aristotle believed the heart
was the source of thought
and reason… HE WAS
WRONG!

To prove this… two greeks

asked the ruler of Alexandria,
Egypt to perform vivisections
on criminals and found out
the brain controlled thought
For almost 2000 years few
contributions happened in
Psychology.

The focus was mostly on

how to “cure” mental illness.
1774 AD Franz Mesmer
detailed his cure for some
mental illnesses later
known as hypnosis.
1848 railroad worker
Phineas Gage suffered
brain damage when an
iron pole pierced his brain.

His personality changed

but his intellect remained
intact suggesting that an
area of the brain plays a
role in personality.
1879 Wilhelm Wundt
founded the first formal
laboratory of Psychology
at the University of
Leipzig, Germany

This marked the formal

beginning of the study
of human emotions &
behavior.
Created the theory of Structuralism.

The only problem was Structuralism

was totally flawed and didn’t last.

But… it created a lot of interest in

this new field of study and led to
greater things
1890 William James
published ‘Principles of
Psychology,’ later became
the foundation for his
theory Functionalism

It looked to link
evolutionary behaviors
to modern day feelings
and actions
Essentially used Darwinism
to explain Psychology
Everything we do or feel has a
“Function”
You want to know why humans are
selfish… Why do kids have a hard
time sharing?
Helped to fuel the classic
“Nature vs Nurture” debate

marking the beginning of
Psychoanalytic Thought.
Freudian Psychology
Psychoanalysis seeks to bring unconscious
thoughts & feelings to consciousness

This was done by “Free Association.”

Freely talking about one’s dreams
The more one talks “freely” the
more one will remember

The practice has proven to be one of many

effective techniques in helping people but the
attempt to standardize results has been an
ongoing problem for almost 100 years
The Real Question?
What do Freud,
An Ancient Greek Story
and your parents have in
common?
Controversial Freud

Like many early

psychologist, some of
Freud’s theories are now
seen as either extremely
flawed… or downright
wrong!
Psychosexual Development
Freud believed that certain hurdles
must be properly navigated or
overcome in order to have an healthy
adulthood.
Psychosexual Development
Freud hypothesized that young boys &
girls (ages 3-5) subconsciously want to
date their parents
and that by mimicking their same sex
parent, they learned how to create a
“healthy libido”

Those that don’t have positive modeling

may become “fixated” and unable to
create healthy relationships
Oh Yuck!
So Freud is saying that
all boys want to date
their mothers
&
All girls want to date
their fathers?
But…
Does it at least help
explain why often times
people date and marry
individuals similar to
their parents?
Todays goal is to finish
