CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Silverman (2014) defined sport as a human activity that involves physical

exertion and skill as the major emphasis of the activity, with aspects of competition or

social engagement, and where rules and patterns of behavior controlling the activity exist

formally through organizations. From playing sports athletes can gain scholarship from

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

playing sports, high grades and cultural aptitude. Scholarship is a grant or payment

made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other

achievement. Sports can help to improve strength, brain health, reduce the risk of

gaining a disease, strengthen bones and muscles, and help us to maintain fit to do

everyday activities.

In addition, students today are widely exposed to a variety of sports activities.

Most students could choose the best activity that suited them since they were aware of a

healthy lifestyle and had access to facilities close to where they lived. However, there

are a number of obstacles that prevent students from actively participating in sports.

These include the present way of life, in which more pupils prefer playing video games

online rather than on a real field. Students typically enjoy their lives by using a computer,

an iPad, a mobile phone, or a play station while being oblivious to the real world around

them as this world transforms into a world without boundaries. As a result, many of them

spend their time online playing games like football, tennis, ping pong, squash, and other

sports to live in an imaginary world. They don't need to leave the house because they

have their own online network.

Background of the Study

The researcher became interested in pursuing this study because he is

somewhat inclined into sports. As a child who loves sport, he believes that this aspect

should be given importance.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

Technology development is positive, but there needs to be a balance between

using it and sacrificing quality of life. Students must be motivated to participate in sports

activities for their own sake because sport is one way to improve life quality. Sport may

promote social bonding, promote student personalities or qualities, help students stay fit,

and deter them from engaging in criminal activity. All of these things enhance the quality

of life. With the strong backing of the government and private groups for sporting events,

schools have received an increasing number of facilities and financial aid to pique

students' interest in sports. Therefore, students should seize the chance to participate in

athletics in order to reap the benefits as well as for their own personal wellness.

The researcher wanted to identify the effect of sports for some of the students in

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy, Inc.

Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to analyze the Effects of Sports to the Grade 4 to 5 Students of
Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy, Inc.

1. What is the demographic profile of the students in terms of:

a. gender?

b. age?

2. What are the effects of sports to the students?

3. What recommendations can the researcher give based on the result of the study?

Significance of The Study

grades of Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy, Inc.

To the students. This study can help to develop their lack of confidence and

know what sports can develop to them. This can benefit them by knowing what are the

good and bad effects of sports on Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy students which will

help them decide whether to engage or not in sports.

To the parents. This study can benefit the them by knowing the effects of sports

for them to continue encourage and support their child to participate in different physical

activities or sports.

To the researcher. This study will enable them to look strong evidence and

responses. Also, this study will serve as guide for the researchers to make sure with the

recommendations and suggestions based on the data gathered.

To the future researchers. This study will serve a s a resource material for the

future researchers whose study is in connection with sports and its effects to students.

Scope and Limitation

This study focused on the effects of sports to the grade 4 to 5 students of Bixby

Knolls Preparatory Academy, Inc. to help them maintain their physical and mental health.

The researcher used the data gathered to give recommendations for the effects of sports

to students which can be either positive or negative.

Definition of terms

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

The term used in this study were defined conceptually and operationally to have

a vivid understanding …

Sports. A human activity that helps to improve muscular strength and

endurance. This can also include physical and mental health improvement.

Sportsmanship. It is the desire or spirit to enjoy a sport or activity for its own

sake. It is done with due consideration of fairness, ethics, respect and solidarity with our

competitors.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Children who compete in sports are recognized to benefit from the development

of healthy lifestyle traits, including the acquisition of physical, social, and cognitive skills

(Choi et al., 2014). Furthermore, in the study conducted by Telford, et.al 2017,

engagement in physical activity is also recognized to contribute a range of positive

outcomes, specifically; physical and mental health, social wellbeing, cognitive and

academic performance. And for the young people to achieve such outcomes it is

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

recognized that physical education (PE) in schools is an ideal vehicle to promote

physical activity due to its availability to all young people. Whilst teachers also have the

opportunity to integrate this into the overall education process.

In addition to the article published by Spooky Nook Sports (2017), there is a

variety of sports for different age groups of students. At ages six to nine years old, kids

will be entering school and will want to have new skills and find their capabilities. At

these ages, kids can get interested into activities their friends are playing. Through

playing sports, they would also develop different attitudes that would improve their

personality and totality as a person. They would have the sense of cooperation,

resolving conflicts, and sportsmanship.

Furthermore, participants in physical education and sports experience several

benefits. For instance, Talbot asserted that involvement in sports can help children

develop respect for their body as well as respect for others. He also stated that sport

participation contributes to positive development of mind and body leading to higher self-

confidence, and self-esteem (Bailey, 2018).

On the other hand, negatively, sports hindered student athletes’ academic

performance due to the rigorous amount of time dedicated to the sport. In extreme and

demanding sports, this amount of time can be higher than twenty hours each week

(Comeaux & Harrison, 2011). The involvement in college sports requires an extreme

amount of time, which takes away from time that would have normally been dedicated to

academic pursuit. This is one of the main reasons that student athletes struggle so much

more than those who are not involved in athletics.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

Also, Hicks 2018 cited that student athletes face detrimental emotional effects

from collegiate sports in a negative way by frequent occurrences of stereotyping. This

stereotyping, though sometimes subtle, comes in many different forms. As recorded in

research, one way that student athletes feel they are stereotyped is through the

assumption that they are merely attending college to participate in athletics and have

absolutely no regard for academics. Those involved in the research pose that this

assumption comes from a variety of sources, such as classmates, professors, or other

people involved in the student athlete’s life at college or directly involved in his life in

some way. Student athletes, especially girls, face this stereotype from their fellow

classmates. Those who do not appreciate or have never participated in sports will often

be intimated by student athletes, even if the athlete is a genuinely kind and outgoing

person.

Moreover, sports very strongly affect the collegiate student athlete’s social well-

being. Positively, sports influenced relations among peers, authority, and family when

those in the athlete’s sphere of influence held a healthy involvement in the athlete’s life.

Healthy involvement constituted financial, emotional, and directional support directed

towards the student athlete. Financial involvement could be represented as parents or

others in the sphere of influence contributing money for foods, gear or other athletic

needs such as team dues and apparel. Emotional involvement can be seen through

emotional support of the student athlete. Even if the parents, family members, or others

within the sphere of influence cannot be physically present at each game or competition,

it is important for the emotional wellbeing of the student athlete that he or she knows that

someone is supporting them. This emotional support also increases sport performance

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

and boosts the student athlete’s self-confidence. Directional support can come from

anyone who aids the student athlete is his or her future endeavors. This could be a

parent, mentor, or coach giving both academic and athletic advice. Such support creates

a sense of security as well as hope for the future (Cremadesa, Donlonb &

Poczwardowskic, 2013).

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study utilized the descriptive-quantitative method in gathering data needed

since it attempted to describe the study identifying the effects of sports to grade 4 to 5

students of Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy, Inc. Descriptive approach is commonly

used to analyze and present quantitative data. Quantitative methods emphasize

objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical or numerical analysis of data

collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing

statistical data using computational techniques. The researcher devised a questionnaire

that will assess the problem of the study, which involved Grade 4 to 5 students.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

Respondents of the Study

This study was conducted at Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy Inc (BKPA) located

in Brgy. Loob , San, Antonio, Quezon. BKPA is a 7-year private school which caters

Nursery to 12th grade students. The respondents were 10 students each from grade

4 to 5 with the total of 20 respondents. The respondents answered a survey

questionnaire for the research to gather needed data and acquire and desire results.

Research instrument

The researcher used a self-made survey questionnaire as reference for the study

of the main data. The self-made questionnaire was first checked and approved by the

assigned teacher, and then for validity and reliability check. After this, the survey

instrument was distributed to the respondents by the researcher using a printed copy

and the respondents answered through writing.

Research Procedure

The researcher has come up with a topic for study and turned in the work. Then,

it was approved by the assigned teacher. The researcher modified the findings after

receiving approval and corrected the areas in which there was a room for improvement.

The researcher started working on this study in August 2022 and successfully finished

this study in May 2023.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

The survey questionnaires have been filled out by the students through paper-

and-pen. The research has given an hour for the questionnaire to be filled out by the

respondents. The data were collected and analyzed after it has been retrieved by the

researchers. Lastly, the data were computed by the statistician. Then, it was analyzed

and interpreted by the researcher.

Statistical Treatment

In the interpretation and analysis of data gathered from the chosen respondents,

the following statistical treatment were used.

Frequency and Percentage Distribution is the number of times the event

occurred in an experiment or study and was used in interpreting the data wherein the

percentage is being calculated by taking the frequency in the category divided by the

total number of participants and multiplying by 100%. It was applied in this study for the

description of the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of gender.

Weighted mean. It is defined as an average computed by giving different

weights to some individual values. This method is calculated by multiplying the weight

assigned to each item with the frequency of responses for each item; the weighted

average of that item will then be computed by dividing the products by the total number

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

of respondents.

Likert scale. It is a rating scale used to assess opinions, attitudes, or behavior

and it is the most extensively used of scaling responses in survey research. This helped

the researcher know how to scale the answer of the respondents in the given

questionnaire.

Likert Scale Description Likert Scale Likert Scale Interval

Strongly Agree 4 3.25 – 4.00
Agree 3 2.50 – 3.25
Disagree 2 1.75 – 2.50
Strongly Disagree 1 1.00 – 1.75

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, conclusions derived and the

recommendations extracted from the study.

Summary

This study aimed to determine the effects of sports to the 4th and 5th grade

students of Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy. The study lasted for about ten

(10) months starting from August 2022 to May 2023. The researcher utilized the

descriptive-quantitative method of research in the study. The gathered data came

through the (10) 4th Grade students, and (10) 5th Grade students of Bixby Knolls

Preparatory Academy with a total number of 20 respondents. The self-made

questionnaire that the researcher conducted is the fundamental instrument of this

study.

Conclusion

1.  Gender does not affect when it comes to engaging in sports. There are equal

numbers and percentage of male and females who are into sports.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

2. At a very young age, students are engaging themselves in sports which help

them develop their critical thinking skills, be a good leader and follower, have self-

discipline, improve their health, and reduce their stress.

Recommendations

1. To the students, to join the different training that the school has provided to

improve the students lack of fitness, energy, sportsmanship, and self-discipline.

2. To school administrators, to continuously offer different training and programs

that will help to train the students in the field of sports.

3. To the teachers, to motivate and support the students in engaging themselves

in different physical activities because learning never stops in the four corners of the

classroom.

4. To the parents, to continue supporting their children who are into sports so the

child will not hesitate or be afraid in engaging themselves into different sports.
