CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Many Students need help communicating and talking to people. Students have

many talents but need help showing them to others. Elective classes can increase the

learning time and improve the literacy achievement of middle school students, though

some students don’t find interest in elective courses, others find elective classes helpful

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

to boost their self-confidence. The confidence of the children requires attention; they

have a hard time showing them to others so the help of adults or teachers is needed.

The teachers as well as the parents have a hard time communicating with the

students, although they have to help the children to boost their confidence without

getting them uncomfortable. Parents should help their child/children to know about their

talent more than before, However, they try to respect their child’s privacy. They have to

assist the child so that the child can know that he/she is not alone in facing the public.

They think that the students require help to Improve and let others see the student's

talent.

Background of the Study

Students at a young age have a hard time learning about their talent. The

Confidence of the child/children requires attention especially when the child/children

have very excellent talent. With elective classes, students can take courses of what

they’d like, for example, Journalism, Arts, Cooking, Math, Research, etc. Choosing

electives is also a way to make yourself stand out when applying for college. Elective

classes may also increase the self-Esteem of students in the class they choose.

Everyone has a talent, but just has trouble showing it. But with patience, and building up

self-esteem you can indeed show off your talent.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

The students can experience the problem of experiencing low motivation of too

much work to do which makes them stressed. You may always try to get help from a

friend or family so you may get motivated and help with the rest of your work.

The problem of too many distractions. Try distancing yourself from distractions

like games, social media, and more to focus on what you're doing. Both games and

social media can get you very distracted and lose focus on your work. They may also

experience difficulty in concentration. Sometimes what you're doing is just so boring that

you lose concentration, start staring at a blank wall, or even start something else.

Another reason for loss of concentration is when someone invites you to do something

else with them and ditch your work. Try to get a friend to do some activities together to

help each other out so you can concentrate. Self-Esteem is quite the problem when it

comes to students, they can feel things like being the lowest in the class, having difficulty

in socializing, always overthinking, and always thinking they're stupid and helpless. Don't

force them too much, just like when trying to get to know an introvert trying to get to

know them more and they’ll feel comfortable socializing with you, this doesn’t only

happen to upper grades but middle schoolers as well. If you are struggling with

understanding the topic, you can always try and push yourself to ask the teacher or a

friend, just remember not to push yourself too hard, like a crayon, push on it too hard

and it will break.

Statement of the Problem

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

The study aims to analyze the impacts of elective classes on the enhancement of

self-confidence and skills of middle school students. It specifically sought to answer the

following questions.

1. In what elective classes are the MSUS students enrolled in

2. What are the impacts of elective classes on middle school students?

3. What recommendations can the researchers give based on the result of the

study?

Significance of the Study

This study undertakes to discover the impacts of elective classes on the

enhancement of self-confidence and skills of middle school students. The result of this

study contributes to the following sectors.

To the students. The direct recipients of the output of this study are the middle

school elective students of Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy, Inc. This study can

benefit them in improving their self-confidence by attending elective classes offered by

the school.

To the teachers. This study is beneficial to the teachers who teach in elective

classes for them to look for more techniques on helping their students to enhance their

self-confidence as said in the title.

To the researcher. This study is beneficial to the researcher for opening up-to-

date opportunities for learning purposes and growth and will bring credibility. With this,

they’ll build up enough confidence to share the results of the study with those individuals

or institutions to enrich or enhance elective classes.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

To the future researchers. This will serve as a reference or inspiration for future

researchers’ studies. The output of this study may serve as a basis for building activities

that will enhance students’ academic performance.

Scope and Limitation

This research was mainly attentive to the impacts of electives classes on the

enhancement of self-confidence and skills of middle school students.  The respondents

of this study were the ten (10) students each from Grade 7 and 8 with the total of 20

respondents.

Definition of Terms

The following words were applied in this research and will be stated as used in the

study:

Self-Confidence. It is the confidence or bravery and will of an individual to its self

or others. Basically, how much will they have in their mental state.

Skills. These are something a person can develop at any second with practice

and patience. Generally, just indicates how good and well-developed you are at

something.

Elective Classes. It refers to a class or course you get to choose which you want

to learn.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Electives help students build self-esteem and achieve higher levels of

achievement. Sihotang, Setiawan, & Saragi (2017) examined the effects of learning

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

strategies and self-confidence on student learning results. They found that student

learning outcomes were related to learning strategies and self-confidence. We also

found that high-confidence students achieved better learning outcomes than high-

confidence students. low self-esteem. And, Verma & Kumari (2016) examined the effect

of self-confidence on academic performance. Elementary school lower-grade children.

Their results showed some differences in student academic performance regarding their

low and high self-confidence.

On the other hand, Tridinanti (2018) examined the relationship between fear of

speaking, confidence, and speaking. EFL undergraduate performance. The results of

this study show that confidence plays a role as an important predictor of student

performance, not anxiety. The study found that students are confident Encourage

students to build confidence to achieve higher achievements. So, if a student’s

confidence is low, it makes their academic performance low as well.

Moreover, Karimi & Saadatmand (2014) conducted a study to examine the

relationship between self-confidence and academic performance. Their study found an

association between academic performance both self-confidence and willingness to

teach. The researchers found that confident students achieved learning success.

Researchers further say that positive school feedback, positive motivation, and student

problem-solving nurture students.

Elective courses may be specified as one or more courses according to the

interests of the students and the teaching staff of the faculty. It is also suggested that

elective courses should be introduced. Nevertheless, considering the available facilities,

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

lack of teaching staff etc. it is often seen that not only the students can take elective

courses from different faculties, but also, they cannot get them from a different

department in the same faculty. This leads students to get elective courses only related

to their field, and maybe causes the capabilities increasingly disappear (Altunbay, 2018).

Furthermore, elective course selections are a substantial portion of a college

student’s education decision making. Electives are intended to give students freedom to

explore intellectual curiosities and broaden their exposure to various subjects. Yet,

previous literature has shown that personal interests are among the least significant

determinants of elective course selection (Lee and Ting 2011).

According to Laurie Futterman who chairs the science department and teaches

gifted middle school science at David Lawrence Jr. K-8 Center, “Reading, math and

science aren’t for everyone — and we need to realize that.” (“Beyond the Classroom:

Electives in School — Essential or Entertaining?”) Students can get amazing impacts

from electives. Elective can change the way students go through their life. Electives

should be allowed to stay in middle and high schools because it can help students find

their hidden talents, it can help them find their future job, and find ways to get better

grades.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

In this research chapter, the research design to be worn, the respondents of the

research study, the research instruments, the research procedures, and the statistical

treatment talked through.

Research Design

The study used of different methodologies to gathered information and correctly

address the problem. Descriptive-Quantitative Research had been befitting in this study

as it allows the researcher to apprehend the information answering the questions

regards in the research problems. Observing the information of the analysis and

congregating the survey of the sample population, this kind of research design were

useful in this research study for that it will be easier for the researcher to gather more

data on the impacts on different kinds of elective classes provided by the school.

Respondents of the Study

This study was conducted at Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy, Inc. (BKPA)

located in Brgy. Loob, San Antonio, Quezon. BKPA is a 7-year-old private school which

caters Nursery to 12th Grade students. The respondents of this study were Grade 7 to 8

who were enrolled in different elective classes from the stated school. The respondents

answered a survey questionnaire for the researcher to collect the needed information

and the desired result.

Research Instrument

The instrument used in this research study was a self-made survey questionnaire

to collect more data about the impacts of elective classes to middle school students’ self-

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

confidence and skills. The survey made by the researcher includes a variety of question.

The survey had been checked, corrected, and approved by the assigned teacher for the

validity and reliability check.

Research Procedure

The researcher was given a topic for study and turned in the work. Then, it was

approved by the assigned teacher. The researcher modified the conclusions after

obtaining approval and corrected the areas in which there was room for enhancement.

The researcher started working on this study in August 2022 and accomplished it in May

2023.  Because the researcher chose to question the Grade 7 and 8 students, the

survey questionnaire was filled out by the respondents via paper and pen.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following treatments that were used for interpreting and analyzing the data

gathered from the selected respondents:

Percentage. It was utilized to reflect the students enrolled in different elective

classes. It was advised in this study to know the percentage of respondents who

answered since it is a component of a total expressed as a number.

Weighted mean. It is defined as an average computed by giving different weights

to some individual values. This method is calculated by multiplying the weight assigned

to each item with the frequency of responses for each item; the weighted average of that

item will then be computed by dividing the products by the total number of respondents.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

Likert Scale. It is a rating scale used to evaluate ideas, attitudes, or behavior,

and it is the most commonly used scaling answer in survey research. For each section of

the questionnaire, four (4) Likert scale items were used.

Likert Scale Description Likert Scale Likert Scale Interval

Strongly Agree 4 3.25 – 4.00

Agree 3 2.50 – 3.25

Disagree 2 1.75 – 2.50

Strongly Disagree 1 1.00 – 1.75

Frequency and Percentage Distribution Formula:

% = f / N x 100

Where, % = percentage

f = Frequency

N = Number of Cases

two (2) students got a percentage of 10.0% selected the course Dance. The remaining

one (1) student selected the course Journalism getting a percentage of 5.0%

Based on the data gathered in Figure 1 by the researcher, most of the students

have chosen to take the elective course Choir. This elective course makes use of

students' voice pitches and strengths making a polyphonic harmony. Students apart of

the Choir sing in school events.

Average Weighted Mean 2.90 Agree

Table 1 shows the impacts of elective classes on the enhancement of self-

confidence and skills of MSUS students. The highest weighted mean is 3.35, stating that

the respondents strongly agree that elective courses can improve their talents. The

second to the highest weighted mean being 3.05, the respondents have stated that they

agree that with elective courses they can express themselves more. Then, followed by a

weighted mean of 2.90, saying that the respondents agree that they can enhance their

self-confidence and self-esteem. The second to the lowest weighted mean is 2.85,

meaning that the respondents agree that they agree that they can develop their social

skills. Lastly, the lowest weighted mean being 2.35, stating that the respondents

disagree that they volunteer when their teacher asks for a volunteer.

Based on the data gathered in table 1 by the researcher, elective courses can

enhance the talents of the students. According to Laurie Futterman who chairs the

science department and teaches gifted middle school science at David Lawrence Jr. K-8

Center, “Reading, math and science aren’t for everyone — and we need to realize that.”

(“Beyond the Classroom: Electives in School — Essential or Entertaining?”) Students

can get amazing impacts from electives. Elective can change the way students go

through their life. Electives should be allowed to stay in middle and high schools

because it can help students find their hidden talents, it can help them find their future

job, and find ways to get better grades.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, conclusions derived and the

recommendations extracted from the study

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

Summary

This study aimed to determine the impacts of elective classes on the

enhancement of self-confidence and skills of middle school students.

The study lasted for about ten (10) months starting from August 2022 to May

2023. The gathered data came through the ten (10) 7th Grade students, and ten (10) 8th

Grade students of Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy, Inc. with a total number of twenty

(20) respondents. The self-made questionnaire that the researcher made was the

fundamental instrument of this study. The researcher made a self-made questionnaire

used as an instrument for gathering data for this study. The questionnaires were

distributed face to face for the respondents to answer.

Conclusion

1. A student of K-12 education, choice has always played a significant part. They can

choose freely on what electives they will be joining according to their interest and talents.

2. Based on the data gathered, electives classes have positive impacts to the

students and these can help the child to hone their talents.

Recommendations

After gathering all the results and related reviews, the researchers hereby

recommend the following:

1. To the students, to join in the electives class that will hone them holistically.

2. To the parents, they should be aware of their child’s elective class so, they can

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

check if their child’s talents and self-confidence are improving with the help of elective

classes.

3. To the teachers, to think of different strategies to be used in their class electives

which will really help their students to develop their self-confidence, self-esteem, and

their talents.

4. To future researchers, to continue studying the impacts of elective classes to the

students and think of an idea which help the students to develop themselves.
