Did you know that the Philippines has the second-most sedentary youth population in
the world next to South Korea? That is according to a World Health Organization 2019 study
that polled 1.5 million teenagers in 146 nations. According to Sassos (2021), a sedentary
lifestyle is a lifestyle in which the individual is physically inactive and engages in little or no
physical movement or exercise. A sedentary person spends much of the day sitting or lying
down while doing something like socializing, watching TV, playing video games, reading, or
using a mobile phone or computer. If sedentism persists, it may contribute to poor health
quality, diseases, and many preventable causes of death (Park et al., 2020). In order to reverse
these effects, exercise should be encouraged, and the best form of exercise is sports. This is
the reason why Sportshub Club is established. SportsHub Club is a student organization and
its mission is to promote sports participation among students and realized its benefits. Since
there are countless benefits of sports, every student of General Mariano Alvarez Technical
Highschool (GMATHS) should join the GMATHS’ SportsHub Club because participating in
sports fosters students' personal development; enhances both physical and mental well-being;
aids the development of students interpersonal skills.

Participating in sports, according to critics, take time away from the classroom and
divert students’ attention away from their studies. They proceed to say that students cannot
achieve excellence and satisfaction in both sports and education. A study's findings indicate
that student-athletes are unable to achieve comparable academic success in the subject of
English as non-student-athletes at comprehensive schools (Niehues et al., 2022). In addition
to that study, although student-athletes at sports schools receive significantly more support in
academics and athletics, according to Thompson et al. (2022), student-athletes tend to
struggle to achieve higher academic success than non-student-athletes for skipping school
due to injury, investing more time in their sports, and missing school activities. On the other
hand, numerous studies found that participating in sports leads to better academic
performance. For example, a study found that there is a link between sports participation and

academic performance, and sports activities have a positive influence on youth education.
These activities are beneficial to colleges' academic missions, students' academic focus, and
student's ability to succeed academically. It is also noted that involvement in these activities
improves youth mental or cognitive development, grade point average, and class test results.
These activities have a positive impact on students' memory and concentration in school
(Khan et al., 2012). Despite the critics saying that sports participation interferes with students'
academic success, it is evident from research that in fact, sports can improve students'
academic performance by enhancing their cognitive capacities, focus, and memory.

The first reason why the SportsHub Club organization should be established and
actualized is that engaging in sports fosters personal development for students. According to
Ghildiyal (2015), sports benefit an individual in ways other than the physical. It develops and
teaches strategic thinking, analytical thinking, leadership skills, goal setting, and risk-taking
(Ghildiyal, 2015). Ghildiyal (2015) also quoted that "Sports in psychology and life helps
develop team spirit, leadership skills, fair play, never give up attitude and focus. It is a great
leveler, helps us know our strengths and abilities, understands process and result, the value of
planning, earnestness and sincerity, observation and analysis”. Engaging in sports is not only
fun but also a great way to develop one's personality.

Secondly, not only engaging in sports is good for students' physical health but also
for their mental health. Moderately strong evidence revealed that running and football both
enhance cardiovascular health and function while at rest, and football lowers body fat.
Running also improves metabolic fitness, adiposity, and postural balance, and football
enhances metabolic fitness, muscular performance, postural balance, and cardiac function
(Oja et al., 2015). Jiang et al. (2020) conducted a survey and demonstrated that anxiety,
depression, and suicidal thoughts were significantly more prevalent in people who engaged in
sedentary behavior. In order to reverse this effect, sports participation also includes
psychological benefits for students. According to Easterlin et al. (2020), team sports
participation during adolescence was significantly associated with better adult mental health

outcomes including a smaller chance of having ever received a diagnosis of depression or
anxiety and having existing depressive symptoms. In addition to that, Murphy et al. (2021)
also noted that students who participated in varsity sports had reduced anxiety and depression
levels than non–athlete students. Varsity sports participation may be beneficial in the
prevention and/or management of depression or anxiety symptoms. It is apparent that
participating in sports not only benefits students' physical but also their mental well-being as
well.

Lastly, Participating in sports will help students’ interpersonal skills development. A

study done by Ding and Sugiyama (2017), discovered that male students' sports experiences
involving challenge and female students' sports experiences involving self-disclosure had a
positive influence on their nonverbal skills; female students' sports experiences involving
enjoyment had a positive influence on their verbal skills. Movahedi et al. (2011) also show
that athlete and non-athlete students differ in terms of socialization. It revealed that visually
impaired student-athletes scored significantly higher on the socialization test than visually
impaired student-non-athletes, proving that participation in sports results in better
socialization improvements. It is evident that participating in sports improves students' social
skills.

Overall, it is apparent that active participation in sports is a great way to refrain from
engaging in sedentary lifestyle behaviors as well as it helps students develop their
personalities, their physical and mental health, and their interpersonal skills. This is why
SportsHub Club believes in the importance of active participation of students in sports.
Therefore, we strongly encourage you to join and become a member SportsHub Club student
organization and be a student champion.
