Benefits of Augury’s
AI-Powered Machine
Health Solution
CONTINUOUS MACHINE MONITORING GENERATES A
tremendous amount of data, well beyond the amount humans can
process. Analyzing this data to diagnose hundreds or thousands of
machines across an enterprise requires automation.

AI incorporates smart algorithms that are capable of performing tasks

that typically require human intelligence. Machine learning is a subset
of AI algorithms, which, just like humans, learn by example and then
apply what they have learned to new situations. The teaching and
learning process takes time and must be ongoing, if the algorithms
are to improve in accuracy and capability.

But algorithms alone are not enough. Any machine learning algorithm
is only as accurate as the data that it learns from.

Augury’s Machine Health for Critical Equipment (MH CR) delivers

unmatched fault diagnostics with AI insights that are verified by Augury’s
human vibration analysts. Machine Health for Supporting Equipment
(MH SE) leverages the same advanced AI with insights verified by on-site
users to provide diagnostics for balance of plant equipment.

How Augury’s AI
Diagnostics Work
AUGURY’S SENSORS CONTINUOUSLY GATHER VIBRATION,
magnetic and temperature data from machines. This anonymized data
is then added to our training dataset. After a brief baseline period,
Augury’s reliability experts assign a machine health status based on
the machine’s condition. A healthy machine is classified as being
in acceptable condition and therefore doesn’t require immediate
attention, while a faulty machine is given a status of monitor, alarm
or danger. This provides a continuously growing pool of supervised
examples that the machine learning model learns from by identifying
data features indicative of machine health status.

In order to classify the health status of a new machine, data is

extracted from the machine, faults are diagnosed, corrective actions
are suggested and the machine health status is defined based on fault
severity. With Machine Health for Critical Equipment, Augury vibration
analysts then validate the AI diagnosis.

Customize Thresholds
for Machine Faults
AUGURY INITIALLY APPLIES ADVANCED SIGNAL
processing methods in order to clean and filter machine data of
irrelevant noise. The processed raw data reflects the changing IDENTIFYING MACHINE FAULTS
magnitude of signals over time and allows us to carefully monitor
meaningful deviations from a baseline.
Bearing
Based on expert knowledge and the history of the machine, thresholds
are set on the signal amplitude or frequency spectrum in order to
provide the first line of defense against machine failure. Augury uses
its machine recording dataset to gather valuable statistics about the
machine and customize relevant thresholds accordingly.
Misaligment
Our rules-based algorithms are based on our existing machine health
domain knowledge as well as on the continuous measurements of our
different sensors. Having magnetic, vibration and temperature sensors
that work simultaneously gives us additional information about the
changes that might happen in the machines due to a fault.

from the data gathered by sensors. This allows
us to provide important information to our

Detect Anomalies
EXTRACTED FEATURE SE TS PL AY A KEY ROLE IN AUGURY’S
anomaly detection algorithms, which search for feature changes that are
indicative of machine health-related issues. These anomalies–such as a
gradual increase in temperature–might manifest in sudden and abrupt
performance changes, or gradual or transient changes.

The key to correctly identifying machine health-related anomalies lies

in Augury’s continuous online monitoring, along with our powerful domain
knowledge that differentiates between operational issues and true health-
related anomalies.

If using simple thresholds, a machine that is turned off or on can easily

be diagnosed with a fault, simply because the machine’s status changed.
Falsely alerting maintenance teams to problems that don’t exist means
that alerts are eventually ignored, resulting in failed program adoption
and costly misses of true failure warnings. The ability of our algorithms
to distinguish between the two ensures we are providing accurate and
relevant machine health alerts.

USING THEIR DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE, OUR

reliability experts and on-site users label data according
to machine health status. These labels serve as “ground
truths,” which categorize our dataset into examples of
faulty and healthy machines. We use these examples to
train our algorithms so that they can later identify new
examples that they have not seen before.

When the trained AI model is used to classify a new

machine, relevant data features and user labels are
extracted and used to assign the machine’s health status. Acceptable Severity

Build Fault Models
for Prescriptive
Diagnostics
WHEN L ABELING A GROUND TRUTH DATASE T, OUR
reliability experts include valuable information regarding specific
machine health issues. This allows us to develop machine-learning
models for each fault type. Augury’s diagnostic coverage therefore goes
well beyond assigning a high-level machine health status. By including
condition estimates at the component (such as a motor or pump) and
bearing levels for root cause analysis, our diagnostics also highlight
exactly what needs to be done to avert a machine failure.

As our machine recording dataset continues to expand, so does its

library of fault signatures used in training the fault detection algorithms.
Because machines run well the majority of the time, most machine
recordings will be normal. Augury’s extensive dataset, accumulated
over a decade, includes a unique number of fault signatures. The more
signatures in our dataset, the greater the relevancy and timeliness of
fault insight our algorithms can deliver to users.
