Operations of Functions
The important concept that we need to understand in this lesson is that adding,
subtracting and multiplying two or more functions together will result in another
function. Dividing two functions together will also result in another function if the
ACQUIRE NEW denominator or divisor is not the zero function.
KNOWLEDGE
Example:
A. F(a)=5a and g(a)=2a+6, find (f+g)(a).
To subtract functions, change the sign of the subtrahend and proceed to combining similar
terms.
Examples:
A. F(x)=5x+4 and g(x)=7x+3
Examples:
A. F(x)=3x and g(x)=x2-5x+7
ABSTRACTION
Try this:
A. F(x)=5x2+2x-3 and g(x)=4x+5: FIND (f+g)(x), (f-g)(x), (g-f)(x), and (f·g)(x)
The learners shall accomplish the activity.
I. Given a(x)=x+5 and b(x)=2x+7, find the following:
1. (a+b)(x)
APPLICATION 2. (a-b)(x)
3. (b-a)(x)
4. (a·b)(x)
II. Given F(x)=3x-7 and g(x)=3x-7: FIND (f+g)(x), (f-g)(x), (g-f)(x), and (f·g)(x)
