Our group came to the conclusion that Unknown 2 is Sucrose.

According to the experiments

conducted shown in this table :

Test Result Discussion

1. Seliwanoff’s Test Seliwanoff’s Test is the chemical test which distinguishes

between aldehyde and ketone (Ketone hexose reaction
occurs faster than aldehyde hexoses.)

The resulting solution is a deep-red solution

(5-hydroxymethylfurfural as a product), which means it is
reactive to resorcinol and the result is positive, therefore
it can be concluded that Unknown #2 is either Fructose
or Sucrose.

2. Iodine Test Iodine’s Test is the chemical test for the presence of
starch (Iodine’s Test has the ability to distinguish
between sucrose and starch) —> From the picture shows
a demonstration of a positive result of the starch,
observed by an intense blue-black colour.

The resulting solution however showed a yellowish-brown

solution, which means it is non-reactive giving a negative
result, therefore we can conclude that Unknown #2 is
sucrose.

3. Benedict’s test Benedict test is a chemical test, used for testing the
presence of reducing sugar. Benedict’s reagent is a blue
solution which turns into brown-red precipitate if
reducing sugar is present.

We can see the result from the experiment, the unknown

solution did not change colour, this means it is a
non-reducing sugar (sucrose), water or starch.

4. Barfoed’s Test Barfoed’s Test is a chemical test for determining the

presence of monosaccharides and disaccharides in
laboratory samples.

The result illustrates that the unknown is a disaccharide

due to the absence of the red precipitate in the unknown
solution.
Answer: Unknown #2 is Sucrose

According to Benedict's Test conducted (Benedict’s reagent reacts only with reducing sugar) we can
see from our result that the Unknown solution shown a negative result; where it didn't change colour when it
reacted with the Benedict's solution, therefore we can conclude that the Unknown Solution #2 is a
non-reducing sugar and can either be Starch or Sucrose.

Following the benedict's test, we conducted the Iodine Test to confirm whether our Unknown solution
is Starch or Sucrose; and from the result we can see that it is negative. This means that the Unknown solution
is in fact Sucrose.
