DISCUSSION 7: MODULE 7

What would you do Before, During and After Earthquake strike?

BEFORE EARTHQUAKE
We never know when an earthquake will strike, so we must always be
prepared, especially since the Philippines is located within the Pacific Ring of
Fire, where earthquakes are often. First, ensure that any heavy items are
securely fastened and that they are not placed in high positions. Second, get
emergency supplies ready. Make sure you have enough water to last a couple
of weeks, as well as canned food and an emergency kit. Prepare a few
batteries, a radio, and a flashlight, as these will be necessary for
communication and visibility, especially if the earthquake occurs at night.
Finally, hold a family meeting to go over what to do before, during, and after
the earthquake. Make a note of the safe zones and where to go after the
earthquake.
DURING EARTHQUAKE
Avoid heavy objects that are hung on the wall or placed on top of
closets or shelves if you are indoors. Avoid from getting close to glasses,
windows, and other items that can cause fires. If you are inside a building,
avoid using elevators and instead take the stairs. Meanwhile, if you're outside,
make sure you're in a wide-open area. Avoid buildings, posts, and other
structures. If you're driving, safely pull over and stop, but keep your distance
from buildings and trees, and don't stop under bridges because they may
collapse and fall. While in a mountainous location, keep an eye out for
landslides and the possibility of rocks falling. Finally, if you are near the ocean
during an earthquake, be aware that there is a significant possibility of a
tsunami, especially if the earthquake is intense.

AFTER EARTHQUAKE
After an earthquake, check yourself for injuries and others for injuries
to provide first aid. Protect your feet from shattered glasses by wearing boots
or shoes. Conduct a safety check on your home because the earthquake may
have produced several hazards such as water, gas, and power lines. After
that, make sure you inform your family right away. Inform your family that you
are safe and unharmed. Moreover, if by any chance you are trapped, do not
act rashly. Stay calm and wait for help. Mostly, brace yourself for aftershocks.
There's a risk that the aftershocks will be as powerful as the first quake.
