DIRECTIONS: Read the comments of Eleanor Roosevelt, first chairperson of the UN

commission that drafted the UDHR, on the importance of universal human rights standards and
answer the following questions below.
“Where, after all, do universal rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small
that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the
neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works.
Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal
dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere.
Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the
larger world”.
Eleanor Roosevelt
The Great Question, 1958

1. What is meant by Eleanor Roosevelt by "universal rights"?

Universal rights was inherent to us even though we have all our differences. We are all free and
equal.

2. Paraphrase the final sentence of the quotation. What does it say about individual responsibility
for human rights? What is meant by Eleanor Roosevelt by "concerned citizen action to uphold"
rights close to home?
Citizen must help one another for us to establish a better world.

Processing:
What decision have you made in the past that led you to neglect the 3 factors mentioned above?
How did the result affect you?
When I was in elementary, I tended to laugh and discriminate against my classmates who
couldn’t afford a new set of uniforms. Now that I’m grown up, I reflected on my own actions and
realized that I did not give justice to them. I also did not consider that all of us have different
catches for every opportunity.
