The Effectiveness of Mobile learning Apps in Enhancing Students Engagement

CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

Mobile learning, or simply m-Learning, is anywhere and anytime learning that is
supported by mobile devices which learners use to access the content. Devices that
enable mobile learning are the same gadgets we all have in our pockets and
backpacks: smartphones and tablets. With m-Learning, students can study assigned
lessons, video lectures, and take tests right from their devices (Valamis,2022). Now
they can learn in a format that is similar to watching Instagram 15sec.stories: it’s
more diverse, agile, and fast. Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all solution, and
mobile learning is not designed for studying complex and abstract processes and
concepts, like theoretical physics. But it will be just fine for quick refresher courses
and interactive quizzes to enhance knowledge retention in both higher education and
corporate spheres(Kholinski,2023).

The use of mobile learning apps for engaging in academic activities is growing
tremendously. Today, more than ever , the use of mobile learning apps has become
necessary for the purpose of academic engagement. For instance, the outbreak of
corona virus in December 2019 from China to many parts of the world, according to
United Nations News (2020), has necessitated compulsory school closure order
which has affected about 1.5 billion students globally. Therefore, the UNESCO
recommended distance learning programmes to limit the disruption of education
because of the outbreak of corona virus otherwise called ‘COVID-19’ across the
world. One of the preventive measures recommended by the World Health
Organization (WHO) was social distancing to prevent the spread of the covid-19
virus. Already, in Nigeria , many teachers and schools who were initially sceptical or
indifferent to the incorporation of digital tools in education have started adjusting by
learning and using the mobile apps. So the use of mobile learning apps has
enhanced students’ academic engagement through online learning while the
epidemic continues to ravage the globe. The post COVID-19 pandemic experience
will likely lead to increase in the adoption of mobile learning applications for teaching
and learning.

In government schools in the Philippines, the shortage of learning materials has

been a persistent problem, the Department of Education has developed plans for
ICT integration for the basic Education System 2000 to 2005, including school
computerization, teacher preparation, IT curriculum creation, digital content
development, finance and evaluation, and appraisal( Tinio,2002; Crisolo,2018), more
needs to be said in the actual context of this new Senior High School program. This
requires educators to be resourceful and innovate. Thus, the use of the ' Mobile
Assisted Language Learning' in which electronic devices are granted premium to
compensate for the shortage of textbook and Instructional materials in the Teaching-
Learning Process( Hulme,2015). In mobile learning, the students are driven more
and more by their personal learning interests, particularly those related to greater
mobility and frequent travel. Some claim that mobile devices help promote
interactions and interactive learning, which are directly important to language
teaching and learning (Lomine & Buckhingham,2019).

In the Davao City, both public and private schools have turned to information
technology (IT) as a tool to improve teaching and learning (Rodrigo, 2013; Crisolo,
2018). However, a corpus of data in the region revealed a lack of similar studies
about Mobile-Assisted Language Learning. Although there have been initiatives
undertaken by some private schools in the use of mobile learning, there are no
published data as proof of information. Furthermore, there are many available
studies of MALL on the internet, but they are mostly quantitative from aboard trying
to establish the efficacy of mobile learning to vocabulary development ( Cakmak &
Ercetin, 2018; Mahdi, 2018; Rahimi & Mouri, 2016), language pronunciation
(Cavus,2016; Cavus & Ibrahim,2017) and students learning achievement (Ozer &
Kilic, 2018).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to measure the effectiveness of mobile learning apps in enhancing
students engagement in Sto. Niño National High School.
This study specifically seeks to answer of this question:
1. What isa the relationship between measuring the effectiveness of using mobile
learning apps and enhancing students engagement?
2.How you sure that the mobile learning apps helps to enhance student
engagement?
