CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

The present COVID-19 pandemic has brought extraordinary challenges and has affected the educational

sectors, and no one knows when it will end. Every country is presently implementing plans and procedures on

how to contain the virus, and the infections are still continually rising. In the educational context, to sustain and

provide quality education despite lockdown and community quarantine, the new normal should be taken into

consideration in the planning and implementation of the “new normal educational policy” (Tria, 2020). Social

media platforms are amongst the most widely used sources of information in the world and it allows people to

communicate in a better way because this is one of the easiest and most effective ways to disseminate

information especially during these days as a new normal.

Nowadays, we all are staying in our homes due to the lockdown policy implemented by the government;

different countries worldwide have introduced various answers during the pandemic to continue the education

process – the introduction of distance learning. These are the online learning platforms such as Google, TV

broadcasts, guidelines, resources, video lectures and online channels were introduced (UNESCO, 2020). In the

higher education institutions, new normal would-be virtual classrooms. The Commission on Higher Education

suggested to strengthen online platforms and blended learning such as but not limited to google classroom,

messenger, zoom, Edmodo, Facebook and YouTube (CHED, 2020). In addition, both will adopt numerous

learning delivery options such as but not limited to face-to-face, blended learnings, distance learnings, and

home-schooling and other modes of delivery (CHED, 2020; DepEd, 2020). However, the implementation

would pose such problems on students who have limited internet access, no gadgets and the poor. According to

the report of Akamai (2017), the Philippines has the lowest internet connectivity in Asia. Besides, such

challenges would be equity gaps, students’ security and safety, quality of learning compromised and poor

assessment results (Winthrop, 2020).

The learning process is optimized through online, making it possible for blended learning or full online

to occur. (Thaariq,2020) Learning Resources are the foundation of knowledge in learning. In this era of
3

efficiency, learning resources are very abundant and easily found. The internet is one of the learning resources

that is inseparable from the search for knowledge(Lau et al., 2018) According to Licudine (2021), Social media

platforms can play an important role for teaching students already hard-wired into the tools and for advancing

teacher professional development benefits of this include making students feel more engaged in learning,

having a deeper interactions between teachers and students and to expands the learning communities beyond

school walls, it’s not surprising since students use social media in almost every other aspect of their lives.

Today, we can see students and teacher adapting a new system of education. The use of social media in

education helps students, teachers and parents to get more useful information, to connect with learning groups

and other educational systems that make education convenient.

RELATED LITERATURE

The coronavirus pandemic has generated changes in the teaching learning process in higher education

institutions and has influenced the interaction between teachers and students. As a consequence of the

pandemic, universities were constrained to carrying out their activity with students exclusively online (Sobaih

ET, AL.,2020). Internet-based learning is considered an option, an alternative to traditional learning [3], during

the Coronavirus pandemic it became an essential element for maintaining the activity of schools and

universities (Abou, et. Al., 2014).

The E-learning process in higher education is done with the help of various online platforms. Over time,

many notions were used to describe online learning, such as Computer-mediated learning, Web-based training,

E-learning systems, and Learning Management Systems. Regardless of their name, all these systems have the

use of the Internet in common, and certain features that allow registration, assessment of the activities of

learners and teachers and that also facilitate the delivery of lectures and interaction between students, their

colleagues and teachers. Among the most important functions of online learning platforms are forums that allow

student-teacher communication and collaboration in an asynchronous way, web conferences that allow video,
4

audio and written communication, and chat, where users can send messages and receive responses in real-time

(Cacheiro et, al., 2019).

Social media, the fast triggering the mean of virtual communication, internet-based technologies

changed the life pattern of young youth (Ansari and Ali Khan, 2020).

Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and Flickr, are being used in learning for the

purpose of convenient communication with other students and potentially with others outside the class such as

students of the same topic and subject experts. The advent of social media has impacted significantly on how

students learn and the mode instructors teach. In today higher education settings, social media is having

influence instructors, students, and others to cooperate with each other on the tasks of knowledge construction

in learning and teaching environments. Social media applications can strengthen class material and positively

influence discussions collaborative work, and authoring (Boateng and Amankwaa,2016).

The benefits of using social media and mobile devices are generally recognized in terms of obtaining

course content, video clips, and transferring instructional notes, among other things. In general, students believe

that social media and mobile devices are the most cost-effective and convenient ways to get pertinent

information. According to studies conducted in Western countries, using online social media for collaborative

learning has a considerable impact on students' academic performance and satisfaction (Zhu, 2012). The goal of

this study was to see how the integration and use of mobile devices in sharing resource materials, interacting

with colleagues, and students' academic performance affected learning and teaching activities at higher

education institutions. The overall purpose of this study was to bring up to date students' in-depth thoughts on

mobile devices and social media in learning and teaching activities. However, this study focused solely on

students' experiences with mobile devices and social media, as well as their understanding of how these gadgets

and social media affect academic achievement. This study's main research question was: what are students'

thoughts on social media and mobile devices as they are integrated into higher education for accessing and

connecting with peers.

5

Electronic devices and social media, according to a University of Central Florida researcher, provide

students with opportunities for collaborative learning and allow them to share resource resources with their

peers (Gikas & Grant, 2013). The results of the eight Egyptian universities indicated that social media has a

considerable impact on higher education institutions, particularly in terms of learning tools and teaching aids.

However, due to a number of impediments, faculty members' use of social media is at a minimum (internet

accessibility, mobile devices etc.).

Students can use social media and mobile devices to create, edit, and share course content in text, video,

and audio formats. These technological advancements have resulted in the emergence of a new type of learning

culture, one built on the concepts of collaborative discovery and interaction (Selwyn, 2012). The phenomenon

of social media emerged in 2005, following the realization of Web2.0, and is more precisely defined as "a series

of Internet-based apps that build on the conceptual and technological underpinning of web 2.0 and allow the

creation and exchange of user-generated content" (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). Students have access to

information through mobile devices and social media.

Students can interact with their mentors, access their course materials, customize them, and form

student communities using social media platforms in academic institutions (Greenhow, 2011a, 2011b). More

than 75 percent of teenagers use online networking sites for e-learning, with 90 percent of school-aged children

utilizing the internet on a regular basis (DeBell & Chapman, 2006; Lenhart, Arafeh, & Smith, 2008; Lenhart,

Madden, & Hitlin, 2005). The results of a focus group discussion with students from three different institutions

in the United States revealed that using social media provided opportunities for collaborative learning, as well

as generating and engaging students in various extracurricular activities. (Gikas & Grant, 2013.

According to S. Kaya, A.Z. Özgür, N. Gizem Koçak, (2012), for distance education the nature of social

media has some advantages for distance education. When appropriately integrated into the online classroom,

social media can offer innovative learning experiences. With a various of social media tools, faculties use

design creative online learning activities. On the other hand, online collaboration becomes much easier when it

is facilitated by social media technologies. Through the help of social media tools in a class, students can
6

participate more and be more engaged in the learning process. One of the most important advantages of social

media usage in distance education is helping online learners feel less isolated. With social media technologies

advancing, distance education will continuously evolve with the trend.

According to Anna (2020), in online learning distractions are everywhere, a delivery or a pet running

into the home office can be disruptive for everyone involved, if you’re in the middle of a virtual classroom

session and time management becomes more challenging. Having a time management system is perhaps the

most difficult challenge for students to overcome because it depends entirely on self-motivation.

While research reveals that the majority of today's college students accept and utilize social media at

significant rates, many higher education professionals are ignorant of how these technologies might be used for

academic benefit. Reynol Junco, an associate professor at Purdue University and a fellow at Harvard's Berkman

Center for Internet and Society, has been frequently noted for his work on the impact of social technologies on

students. He gives a practical method for implementing effective social media strategies within higher education

in Engaging Students through Social-Media: Evidence-Based Practice for Use in Student Affairs. The book fills

the gap between a desire to use social media and the process expertise required to design and evaluate effective

social media interventions, providing a research-based understanding of how students use social media and how

it may be used to improve student learning. Learn appropriate strategies for social media use and how they

contribute to student success in both formal and informal learning settings Dispel popular myths about how

social media use affects students Learn to use social media to engage students, teach online civil discourse, and

support students in both formal and informal learning settings. Critical thinking abilities, content knowledge,

diversity appreciation, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, community participation, and student perseverance

are all benefits of social media activity. This resource explains the importance of using social media in higher

education and provides research-based ways for doing so effectively.

METHODOLOGY

The researchers employ a descriptive quantitative method for this study to demonstrate and assess the

integration of social media platforms in online classes of students in the new normal. Descriptive research is a

type of quantitative study that aims to collect measurable data in order to do statistical analysis on a population

sample. A descriptive research design can study one or more variables using a range of research methods.

Unlike experimental research, the researcher does not influence or change the variables; instead, they are

observed and measured (McCombes2020). It is a widely used market research instrument that allows us to

collect and define the characteristics of a demographic category.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

In this study, the researchers use a purposive sampling. Purposive sampling, also known as judgmental,

selective, or subjective sampling, is a type of non-probability sampling in which researchers choose people from

the public to participate in their surveys based on their own judgment. A purposive sample is one that a

researcher chooses based on their understanding of the study and population. The participants are chosen based

on the sample's purpose, as indicated by the name.

DATA COLLECTION

Data collection is a process of collecting information from all the relevant sources to find answers to the

research problem, test the hypothesis and evaluate the outcomes. Information assortment devices allude to the

gadgets/instruments used to gather information, like a paper survey or PC helped talking with framework.

Contextual analyses, Agendas, Meetings, Perception here and there, and Studies or Polls are generally

apparatuses used to gather information. Surveys, interviews and focus groups are primary instruments for

collecting information. Today, with help from Web and analytics tools, organizations are also able to collect

data from mobile devices, website traffic, server activity and other relevant sources, depending on the project.
