INTRODUCTION

Research Title: The Impact of Over Usage of Gadgets to the Academic Performance of

SFSASHS GAS 11 Students

Introduction:

In today's digital age, the use of electronic devices has become vital role in modern - day

life, it revolutionized the way we communicate, work and learn. In the field of education,

most students learned how to use technologies in able for them to find information and

communicate easily. It becomes increasingly prevalent and vital needs among students in

recent years. Laptops, smartphones and tablets are electronic gadgets that students used for

their studies. Smartphones is the commonly used by the students because it supports a wide

variety of services such as internet access, email, messaging, games, photography and other

services. Most of the students essentially need gadgets for their learning, but while these

devices offer numerous benefits it could be addictive lead to over usage and affect the

academic performance of the students.

Most 11 Gas students of SFSASHS have their own gadgets like cellphones and laptop,

even the poor and rich students can afford smartphones. Students intends to perform well in

their studies and some students use gadgets for entertainment. Some SFSASHS GAS 11

STUDENTS don't even need textbooks or books because they access to internet and it makes

them comfortable which also changed their lifestyle. Gadgets could be the factor in the

students’ academic achievements and motivation, their activities are much easier and less
time consuming with the use of gadgets. And students rely on gadgets for their learning

improvement but too much usage on this gadget also lead distraction to the students and

affect their ability to learn. A study by Common Sense of Media found that 50% of teens feel

addicted for their mobile devices and 59% of parents feel that their teens are addicted as well.

Furthermore, according to a study by Organization and Development (OECO), students who

spend more time on electronic devices have lower academic achievement than those spend

less time on gadgets. In this alarming issue raises concerns regards with the excessive use of

gadgets, the Department of education (DepEd) issued guidelines on the use of electronic

devices in schools, stating that gadgets should be used only for educational purposes under

the supervision of teachers. The DepEd order No.2, series of 2019, emphasizes the

importance of responsible gadgets use and provides guidelines for schools to regulate gadgets

use among students. However, the effectiveness of these policies is still being debated and

many students continue to use their gadgets excessively. In addition, studies have shown that

the blue light emitted by electronic devices can interfere with the quality of sleep, leading to

fatigue and reduced cognitive function this is particularly concerning for the students’

learning ability.

This study will be conducted among Grade 11 Gas students in Sta. Fe Stand Alone Senior

High School (SFSASHS), a school where technology is an integral part of the learning

experience. And the main goal is to know the impacts of over usage of gadgets to the

academic performance of the students. This study is essential for addressing the issue of over

usage of gadgets and aims to raise awareness and help students understand the importance of

balancing technology usage with academic responsibilities.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:


This study aims to define the impacts of excessive use of gadgets to the to academic

performance of grade 11 students at Sta. Fe Stand Alone Senior High School.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions.

1. How may the profile of the respondents be described in terms of:

1.1 AGE

1.2 GENDER

1.3 SECTION

2. How much time do students use gadgets and what are the common devices they use?

3. How does the usage of gadgets relate to the academic performance of GAS 11 students at

SFSASHS?

4. What are the common factors that influence gadgets usage among GAS 11 students at

SFSASHS?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

The results of the study will be great benefit to the following:


Students: The results of the study can increase students’ awareness about the effects of

excessive use gadgets to their academic performance. It can also help them develop self-

regulation and balance their gadget use with their academic responsibilities.

Parents: This study can help the parents to understand the negative effects of over usage

of gadgets on their child's academic performance. They can use this to limit and monitor their

children's gadget usage to ensure it does not interfere with their studies.

Teachers: This study, teachers will be able provide insights and help students develop

strategies to mitigate this excessive use of gadgets. It can also help teachers to educate

students on responsible gadget use and encourage them to prioritize their studies over gadget

use.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY:

This study will focus on the impacts of excessive use of gadgets to the academic

performance of grade 11 GAS students at SFSASHS. The research will define their frequency

of use and how it affects their academic performance. The respondents will be limited to 5

students from each GAS 11 section who identified as over users or gadgets at Sta. Fe Stand

Alone Senior High School (SFSASHS), the study was conducted during the school year

2022-2023.

This study will be limited to 11 GAS students and will not explore other factors that may

affect academic performance such as social economic status or family background. Moreover,
the research will only cover the impacts of excessive gadgets use on academic performance

and will not delve into other potential impacts such as physical health and mental health.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

For a better understanding of this study, the following terms are defined in the context of

this research.

Distraction. Anything that diverts attention away from a task or goal, such as

notifications or messages from gadgets.

Electronic devices. Use electric current to encode analyze, or transmit information such

as smartphones, tablets, computers, and laptops are commonly used today.

Frequency. The amount of time spent using electronic devices.

Impact. This refers to the effects of gadgets on the respondents in their learning.

Over usage. The excessive or habitual use of something. In this case, gadgets.
