Chapter I.
Background of the study

Introduction

We live in an age in which technology is becoming more and more dominant. We use cellphone
everyday for work, business, studying, gaming and communication. It has continually proved it's
worth as the single most important pocket device in this era. Smartphones have made banking,
work, gaming, studying, and shopping accessible to all. It has been making life easier for
everyone with these advancements.

Smartphones have also become a necessity on the daily lives of senior high school students
specially during these times. It has helped both students and teachers on conducting online
learning when face to face classes are unavailable. It also played a major role on the mental
health of students during the pandemic. It helped the students communicate with their peers to
lessen the burden of lacking social exposure and being trapped in their homes.

According to (Mahmood et al., 2014) both positive and negative effects have been found among
smartphone consumption and academic performance. According to the study, they can access
the internet, send and receive text messages from their social circle, check emails and even
video chat with their friends and family from the tips of their hands. Also, we observe that
students use social media sites and applications, online libraries and portals from their
smartphones which helps to enhance their
learning process.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to determine the different effects of using cellphone on the behaviour of
students

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the positive effects of using cellphone?
2. What are the negative effects?
3. How does using cellphone affects the students behavior?
4. What interventions should parents and teachers do to improve the negative effects of over
exposure of students on smartphones?
Scope and Delimitation

This study is mainly focused on how exposure to smartphones positively or negatively affect the
behavior of the SHS GAS students of Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School in the School
Year 2021-2022. The delimits of the study is generalized to the mild behavioral changes of the
respondents. Thus, the researchers collected information that was examined and evaluated.

Significance of the study

This research is one of the biggest issues that needs to be tackled nowadays. Smartphone
addiction has negative impacts on student learning and overall academic performance. The
greater the exposure of students on smartphone, the greater the negative impact on learning.
The skills and cognitive abilities students needed for academic success are negatively affected
by excessive use of smartphones. Smartphones are what limits the students that want to focus
on their studies, their attention could be transferred to the smartphone instead of studying. But
surely the effect of using smartphones is on the student's hand, on how they manage or deal
with it, and how the people around them could give them advice and guidance. This topic gives
awareness to teachers and parents to guide the students on discpline in using smartphones.

Definition of Terms

To understand the contents of this study, the researcher includes the definition of the following
term:

•Smartphones- a mobile phone, and an operating system capable of running downloaded

applications.

•Behavior- the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others

•Technology- the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in

industry.

•New Media Technology- A generic term used to describe all forms of computer-based or web-
related communication technology

•Internet- a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication

facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

• Wi-Fi : a facility allowing computers, smartphones, or other devices to connect to the internet
or communicate with one another wirelessly within a particular area
•Mental Health- Mental health refers to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well being.

•Cognitive Ability-Cognitive skills, also called cognitive functions, cognitive abilities or cognitive
capacities, are brain-based skills which are needed in acquisition of knowledge, manipulation of
information and reasoning.

•Dominant-controlling or being more powerful or important than all others The team is dominant
in its league

• Necessity- the quality or state of being necessary He questioned the necessity for the change.

Conceptual framework

There are positive and negative effects on the behavior of students depending on how they use
their phones. Some positives effects of phones are enhanced learning, strategic thinking and
increased creativity. While the positive effects are not limited to these examples, these are the
most impactful to the student's daily life. There are also negative effects that come from using
phones. Some of them are addiction, short term memory loss, depression and other disorders.
These negative effects are usually linked with excessive use of phones to the point that it affects
a student's daily life.
Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The review of this study focuses on the effects of using smartphones in the behavior of GAS
senior high school students. The literature also will also discuss issues about the possible
health risk.

According to Gairmauc (2013), today's classrooms are equipped with the latest
technology to enhance instruction. Smartphones use in the classroom is still somewhat
controversial, but the calgary board of education actually encourage it as learning tool.

New media technologies and a number of important studies were conducted in the
2000’s on the impact of children intellectual development, and various aspect of using such
technologies. Many researchers were conducted aimed to organize understanding the change
that took place by using these technologies, and explore the conversion in children's behavior
and focused to discover what extent children feel aggression, and how they react by using
these modern technologies e.g video games, mobile phones with various application embedded
using via internet with wifi connection.

According to (Mahmood et al., 2014) Multiple arguments are existing over the previous
literature and research studies for an association. Both positive and negative effects have been
found among smartphone consumption and academic performance. According to the study,
they can access the internet, send and receive text messages from their social circle, check
emails and even video chat with their friends and family from the tips of their hands. Also, we
observe that students use social media sites and applications, online libraries and portals from
their smartphones which helps to enhance their
learning process

In the study, Alfawareh and Jusoh (2014), found that almost every student owns a
smartphone at their senior high school level, and most of them didn’t own it for learning and
teaching purposes, but indirectly their smartphones turned into a directed to a beneficial and
useful purpose. Also, many studies show that the excess usage of smartphones by students in
the classroom during lectures will disconnect students from learning in the classrooms which
results in a negative effect on the academic performance of students
