Introduction
Welcome to Fun for Flyers
Fun for Flyers is the third in a series of three books written for learners aged between 7 and 13
years old. Fun for Starters is the first book and Fun for Movers is the second.
This introduction will give you useful information about Fun for Flyers, the Cambridge ESOL
Flyers Test and about teaching learners of this age group.

Who is Fun for Flyers for?

Fun for Flyers has been written for teachers and learners of English who are in a wide variety
of situations.
It is suitable for:
● both small and large groups of learners. (Where appropriate, suggestions are included for
using certain activities with larger classes.)
● both monolingual and multilingual classes.
● learners who are preparing to take the Cambridge ESOL Flyers Test.
● those who do not intend to take the Test but need a book which develops vocabulary,
grammar, good learning habits and skills for this age group.

What are the key features?

● Complete coverage of the vocabulary and grammar which appear on the Cambridge ESOL
Flyers syllabus for the updated 2007 Flyers Test.
● Fun activities which practise English in a meaningful way.
● A focus on all four skills with an emphasis on those areas most likely to cause problems for
young learners at this level.
● Thorough preparation for all types of questions in the Flyers Test.
● Useful advice in each unit of the Teacher’s Book on how learners should approach each part
of the Flyers Test.
● Little or no preparation of lesson materials.
● Personalisation of the language at the presentation and at the practice stage.
● A variety of activities (games, drawing, colouring, communicating, projects, etc.) which
ensure learner involvement and enjoyment.
● Involvement of learners in the learning process.
● Recycling of language throughout the book.
● Suggestions for managing larger classes and an odd number of learners in a group.

How should I use Fun for Flyers?

Fun for Flyers can be used to supplement a main course for learners who need thorough
preparation for the Cambridge ESOL Flyers Test. It can also be used on its own, for learners
who need to revise the key language and skills required in the Test. Or it can be used by those
not taking the Flyers Test, as a resource book giving motivating practice in key language areas
or skills development. Fun for Flyers is ideal for learners who have been studying English for
three or four years and who need to consolidate their language and skills.

How is the Student’s Book organised?

Contents
This tells you where you can find each section of the Student’s Book.
55 units
Language is presented and practised in the units. Each topic-based unit is designed for a lesson
of 45–50 minutes.
Extension activities
At the end of each unit, there is one or more Extension activity to provide further practice of
the language in the unit. Many of these activities are games. These activities appear in the
Teacher’s Book.
Pairwork activities
In some units, there are communicative pairwork activities. Learners will need to look at the
relevant page at the back of the Student’s Book.
Unit wordlist
The Unit wordlist at the back of the Student’s Book provides a record of the key words which
appear in each unit and is organised by topic. There is space for learners to make notes or to
write translations for each word.
List of irregular verbs
This includes the past simple form and the past participle of irregular verbs in Fun for Flyers,
and space for learners to write translations.

grammar. Some of these activities appear in the 17

Extensions for some units and in this case, you will need
to refer to the instructions below.
Nine lives (‘Hangman’)
Draw (or stick) nine body outlines on the board. Choose a word. Write one line on the board for
each letter in the word, for example: __ __ __ __ __. (dress) Learners put up their hands to say
letters. If the letter is in the word, you write it on the line. If the letter is not in the word, you
remove one of the bodies from the board. The game finishes when the learners complete the word
or they lose all nine lives. Learners then write lines for their words.
The long sentence
Choose a simple sentence which can grow if words are added to the end of it.
For example:
Teacher: In my town, there’s a hospital.
Learner 1: In my town, there’s a hospital and a library.
Continue round the class, with each learner repeating the sentence and all the words which have
been added, before then adding another word. Players are eliminated if they forget a word or
repeat one. The winner is the person who remembers all the words in the correct order when
everyone else has been eliminated.
Change places
Learners sit in a circle. The teacher says sentences starting with the words, ‘Change places if …’
For example: Change places if you got up at 8 o’clock today. All the learners who got up at 8 o’clock
have to stand up and move to sit in a different place.

Group or order the words

Take any group of words (related or not) and ask learners to group or order them:
● From longest to shortest
Learners write the words in order according to the number of letters they have.
● From smallest to biggest
Learners write the words starting with the smallest thing/animal/food, etc.
● Alphabetical order
Learners write the words in alphabetical order.
● Colour groups
Learners write words in groups according to colour.
Backs to the board
● Divide the class into teams of 4–8 learners, depending on the size of the class.
● Put one chair for each team at the front of the class. It should be placed so that the person
who sits there will have their back to the board and face their team.
A learner from each team comes and sits on a chair.
● Write up a word on the board (for example: page). One team gives clues to the learners
on the chairs so that they can guess the word.
● The first learner from the chairs at the front to stand up gives an answer. If they are right,
they get a point for their team. If they are wrong, they sit down and another team gives a
clue. Again the first person to stand up gives an answer. Teams get a point for every
correct answer.
● When the word has been guessed, different learners from each team come to the front of
the class and sit down and the activity is repeated.

Using the pictures in the Student’s Book

You can use the pictures in the Fun for Flyers Student’s Book in many different ways to revise
and practise language. Here are some suggestions.
Which picture?
In pairs or small groups, one learner chooses a picture from any page in Fun for Flyers. The
other learner(s) have to ask questions to discover which picture. For example: Are there any
people? Is it inside? Are there any other pictures on the page? Once the other learner(s) have
found the picture, they choose a picture and are asked questions.
Differences
Tell learners to look at two different pictures in Fun for Flyers, for example: page 5 (Unit 2) and
page 24 (Unit 21). In pairs, they find similarities and differences between the two pictures. (For
example: In both pictures, we can see people. In the first picture, some children are playing, but in the
second picture, no one is playing.)
Yes or no?
Learners in small groups write sentences about a picture in Fun for Flyers. Some sentences
should be true for the picture and some should be false. They either pass their sentences on
to another group or they say the sentences to the other group. The other group has to say
or write yes for the true sentences and no for the false ones.
Listen and draw
Learners work in pairs or small groups. One learner looks at one of the pictures in Fun for
Flyers. This person describes the picture to the other learner(s), who have to draw the picture.
Where’s the treasure?
There is some treasure hidden somewhere in the picture. Learners have to find it by asking
questions. For example, page 38 (Unit 35) Is it on the balcony? (No) Is it in the snowman? (Yes!)

Dictations
Dictations don’t have to be boring! They are great for practising spelling, word order and
prediction. Here are some different ways you can use dictation in class.
Word dictations
● Spell a word, letter by letter. Learners listen and write the letters. When a learner thinks
they know the word you are spelling, they shout ‘Stop!’ and say the word and the
remaining letters. If the learner is correct, give them a point for every remaining letter
they guessed.
● Dictate the letters of a word, but not in the right order. Learners have to write the word
as quickly as possible.
● Dictate all the consonants from a word (indicating the gaps for vowels). Learners have to
complete the word with a-e-i-o-u.
Sentence dictations
● Dictate the key words from a sentence which has appeared in the unit or text. Learners
have to write the full sentence so that it is similar (or identical) to the original sentence.
● Dictate a sentence a word at a time. (For example, a definition sentence like those which
appear in Flyers Reading and Writing Part 1.) Learners write the words and shout ‘Stop!’
when they think they can complete the sentence (or say what is being defined).
● Learners listen to a whole sentence. They only write the longest word (with the most
letters) in the sentence.
● Dictate only the start of the sentences. Learners complete the sentences in their
own words.
For example:
Teacher: This morning I put on ...
Learner (writes): my clothes.
