Question 1 (50 marks)

Read the case study below and answer the question that follows:

Motivation through innovation

James has recently accepted a post as Innovation Director at a large privately

owned organisation. The organisation has 150 employees over nine different
departments, and the corporate culture is customer-centric. The post is new to
this organisation, and this is the first time James has taken on such a role.

A few days into the job, James noticed that many of the staff required additional
motivation in their respective job roles. He decided to have one-on-one meetings
with several of the staff members in the organisation. James discovered the
following:

• Many staff members were loyal to the organisation, but were not
extremely motivated at work.
• Most staff members were not involved in any innovation activities.

James consulted an external advisor for guidance around activities that would
motivate the staff.

You have just been appointed as the advisor to help James better understand
and deal with factors of innovation motivation, and to suggest an intervention
plan that can revitalise the organisation’s performance in terms of motivation.

Prepare an Innovation Motivation Enhancement Plan in which you cover the

following:

1.1 In a global study of innovation management, the American Management

Association (AMA, 2006) identified 14 key characteristics of innovative
organisational cultures. Select any 10 key characteristics of innovative
organisational culture and advise James on how he can apply them to
his organisation to improve innovation. (2 × 10 = 20)

1.2 Smith (2015) discusses motivational schemes that have been employed
by leading companies to promote innovation.

• Select any two (2) motivational schemes that may be

implemented by James to successfully motivate staff members

and propose a comprehensive plan, aimed at stimulating and
sustaining motivation innovation among them. Justify your
choice(s) of the recommended motivational scheme(s) and
discuss all elements needed to effectively implement the
scheme(s) within the organisation. (20)
• Also, clarify and state any assumptions you made about the
organisation, which might facilitate an understanding of your
proposed scheme/s. (5)

Note: five (5) marks will be awarded for the technical quality of your answer,
including editing, formatting, logical presentation and referencing. Use the
Marking Rubric as a guide when drafting your response.

References

To do justice to the question, you have to consult a minimum of three (3)

correctly referenced academic sources to describe the applicable theory before
you apply it to the case study above.

Failure to reference sources correctly (in-text referencing as well as a Reference

List) will lead to a significant loss of marks. Download the Milpark Reference
Guide (on your myCourses page) to assist you with referencing. Sections without
in-text references will NOT be marked.
