SECTION A: PURE MATHEMATICS

i. Given that (𝑥 2 − 1) is a factor of 𝑝(𝑥), where 𝑝(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 3 + 𝑏𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 1,
a. Find the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏. (3 marks)
b. Express 𝑝(𝑥) as a product of its linear factors. (2 marks)
ii. Given that 𝛼 and 𝛽 are the roots of the equation 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 2 = 0.
a. Find the values of 𝛼 + 𝛽 and 𝛼𝛽. (1 mark)

i. New employees joining a certain company have a basic salary of 150,000 FCFA. Every year they
stay, they have a salary increase of 10,000 FCFA. Charles is recruited by the company.
a. Determine his salary after 4 years. (2 marks)
b. Find the total amount the company must have paid him for these 4 years. (3 marks)
ii. The diagram shows pendulum released from a point, and
swings through angles of 900 , 67.50 , 50.6250 , …
a. Show that 900 , 67.50 , 50.6250 are terms in a geometric
progression, stating the common ratio. (2 marks) 67.50
b. Show also that the total angle this pendulum covers is
equivalent to one complete revolution before finally
coming to rest. (2 marks)

i. A transformation is defined by 𝑇: (𝑥, 𝑦) ↦ (2𝑥 − 𝑦, 𝑥 + 𝑦). Find:
a. The image of the point (2, −3). (2 marks)
b. The matrix of transformation. (1 mark)
c. The point whose image is (1, 2) (2 marks)
ii. Given the set 𝑆 = {2, 4, 6, 8} and the operation ×10 (multiplication modulo 10)
a. Draw an operation table for 𝑆. (2 marks)
b. Show that (𝑆,×10 ) forms a group (assume associativity). (2 marks)

5. The staff of an organization have to travel for an official meeting. There are two types of tickets
sold: a VIP ticket and a Regular ticket. Each VIP ticket costs 30, 000 FCFA while a Regular ticket
costs 10, 000 FCFA. The organization has not more than 90, 000 FCFA for the transportation of her
70 staff. The transport management reserves 10 VIP tickets and 10 Regular tickets. Taking 𝑥 to
represent a VIP ticket and 𝑦 to represent a Regular ticket,
a. Write down four inequalities connecting 𝑥 and 𝑦. (2 marks)
b. On a linear programming graph shade so as to leave unshaded the region satisfied by these
inequalities. (2 marks)
A profit of 10, 000 FCFA is made on each VIP ticket and a profit of 3, 000 FCFA is made on each
Regular ticket.
c. Calculate the least profit the transport management can make. (2 marks)

6. The vector equation of two lines 𝑙1 and 𝑙2 are given by


𝑙1 : 𝒓1 = 2𝒊 − 𝒋 + 𝑠(−𝒊 + 𝒋), 𝑙2 : 𝒓2 = −𝒊 + 7𝒋 + 𝑡(𝒊 − 3𝒋)
a. Find the position vector of the point of intersection of the lines 𝑙1 and 𝑙2 . (3 marks)
b. Find the cosine of the angle between the lines 𝑙1 and 𝑙2 above. (2 marks)

Taking values of 𝑥 at intervals of 300 and taking 2 cm to represent one unit on the 𝑦 − axis,
draw the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) for 00 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3600 . Using your graph, (2 marks)
a. Find to one decimal place the maximum value of 𝑓(𝑥) (1 mark)
b. Solve the equation 6 cos 𝑥 + 4 sin 𝑥 = 3. (1 mark)

i. Differentiate the following with respect to 𝑥 the function 𝑦 = tan(𝑥 2 + 1). (2 marks)

ii. Find the equation of tangent to the curve 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 4 at the point when 𝑥 = 2. (3 marks)
iii. Find the points of intersection of the curve 𝑦 = 4𝑥 − 𝑥 2 and the line 𝑦 = 𝑥.
Hence, find the area of the finite region enclosed by the curve and the line. (4 marks)

i. A particle starts from rest at the origin and moves so that at time 𝑡 seconds, its velocity 𝒗, is
given by 𝒗 = (3𝑡 2 𝒊 − 2𝑡𝒋) m/s. Find when 𝑡 = 2,
a. The velocity of the particle. (2 marks)
b. The acceleration of the particle. (2 marks)
c. The displacement of the particle from the origin. (3 marks)
ii. A particle 𝑃 of mass 4 kg moving in a straight line with speed 3 ms collides with another

particle 𝑄 of mass 2 kg which is stationary. After impact, the speeds of 𝑃 and 𝑄 are equal.
Find:
a. The speed of each of the particles after impact. (2 marks)
b. The loss in kinetic energy due to the impact. (3 marks)
iii. Two particles 𝑃 and 𝑄 of masses 2 kg and 𝑚 kg are connected by a light inextensible string
which passes over a smooth fixed pulley, such that 𝑃 and 𝑄 hang freely. When the system is
released from rest, particle 𝑄 descends with an acceleration of 2 ms-2. Find:
a. The value of 𝑚. (3 marks)
b. The tension in the string. (2 marks)

i. The rate of change of the surface area of a sphere is 24𝜋 𝑐𝑚2 𝑠 −1 at the instant when the
radius is 3 cm. Find the rate at which the radius of the sphere is changing. (5 marks)

iii. The position vector of the centre of mass of three particles of mass 4 kg, 𝑚 kg and 𝑛 kg
which are at the points with position vector (2𝒊 − 3𝒋), (3𝒊 + 8𝒋) and (5𝒊 + 3𝒋) respectively is
(3𝒊 + 6𝒋). Determine the values of the masses 𝑚 and 𝑛. (6 marks)

i. A uniform beam 𝐴𝐵 of length 2 m and weight 𝑊 is pivoted at a point 𝑃, which is 0.5 m from
the end 𝐴. Weights of 150 N and 10 N are placed at the ends 𝐴 and 𝐵 respectively. Given that
the system is in equilibrium, determine the weight 𝑊 of the beam. (5 marks)
ii. A car of mass 1000 kg ascends a hill inclined at an angle of 𝜃 to the horizontal, where sin 𝜃 =

against a constant resistive force of 500 N. Given that the maximum speed of the car up

the hill is 15 ms-1,
a. Find the rate at which the engine of the car is working. (5 marks)
b. The maximum speed of the car on a level road given that the engine works at the same
rate. (4 marks)
iii. A force acts vertically upwards on a particle of mass 4 kg. The particle rises from rest,
through a distance of 10 m and its speed changes to 5 m/s. Calculate the done against
gravity by the force. (3 marks)

b. Michael falls sick or he goes for checkup. (3 marks)
c. Michael does not go for checkup given that he falls sick. (3 marks)
