Subject Code M1 Elementary Algebra

Module Code 5.0 Linear Equations in One Variable

Lesson Code 5.1.2 Properties of Equality
Time Limit 30 minutes

TARGET

By the end of this module, students are expected to:

1. state the law of transposition; and

2. state the zero property of multiplication.

IGNITE 15 minutes [Actual Time Allotment _____ mins]

Definition: Law of Transposition

For 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 ∈ 𝑅, if 𝑎 + 𝑏 = 𝑐, then 𝑎 = 𝑐 − 𝑏.
Moving a number from one side of the equation to the other side of the same equation reverses
the sign of that number.

Proof:

𝑎+𝑏 = 𝑐
𝑎 + 𝑏 + (−𝑏) = 𝑐 + (−𝑏) Addition property of equality, Adding – 𝑏 to
both sides of the equation
𝑎 + 0 = 𝑐 + (−𝑏)
Simplify
𝑎 =𝑐−𝑏

Example:
If 𝑗 + 𝑔 = −6, then 𝑗 = −6 − 𝑔

If 𝑦 − 𝑧 = 8, then 𝑦 = 8 + 𝑧

Math 1 Page 1 of 4
Definition: Zero Property of Multiplication

0∙𝑎 = 𝑎∙0= 0
The product of a real number and zero is zero.

Example:

4(𝑥) = 0

0 (𝑚 − 𝑛) = 0

NAVIGATE 10 minutes [Actual Time Allotment _____ mins]

Even-numbered items may be graded. Odd-numbered items have answers at the end of the lesson.
For submission of answers to even-numbered items and grading scheme, consult your teacher.

Directions: A statement is TRUE if it is always true; otherwise, it is FALSE. Identify whether each
statement is TRUE or FALSE.

__________ 1. If 𝑥 + 2𝑦 = −8, then 𝑥 = −8 + 2𝑦.

__________ 2. If 𝑎 − 3 = 𝑏 + 3, then 𝑏 = 𝑎 − 6.

__________ 3. If 𝑎 = 𝑏, then 𝑎(0) = 𝑏(0).

__________ 4. If 𝑥 (0) = 𝑦(0), then 𝑥 = 𝑦.

__________ 5. If 𝑑 − 6 = 11, then 𝑑 = 5.

__________ 6. If 𝑧 + 5 = 5, then 𝑧 = 0.

__________ 7. If 𝑢 − 𝑣 = −0.8, then 𝑣 = 𝑢 + 0.8

__________ 8. If 𝑑 = 1 − 𝑐, then 𝑑 + 𝑐 = −1.

__________ 9. If 𝑝 = 0 and 𝑞 + 𝑟 ≠ 0, then 𝑝(𝑞 + 𝑟) = 0.

__________ 10. If 𝑥𝑦 ≠ 0 and 𝑧 = 0, then 𝑥𝑦𝑧 ≠ 0 .

KNOT 5 minutes [Actual Time Allotment _____ mins]

Points to Remember!
For 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 ∈ 𝑅, the following Properties of Equality are some of the basic rules to follow in
solving equations:

 Reflexive Property 𝑎=𝑎

 Symmetric Property If 𝑎 = 𝑏, then 𝑏 = 𝑎

 Transitive Property If 𝑎 = 𝑏, and 𝑏 = 𝑐, then 𝑎 = 𝑐

 Addition Property of Equality If 𝑎 = 𝑏, then 𝑎 + 𝑐 = 𝑏 + 𝑐

 Multiplication Property of Equality If 𝑎 = 𝑏, then 𝑎 ∙ 𝑐 = 𝑏 ∙ 𝑐

 Cancellation Law of Addition If 𝑎 + 𝑐 = 𝑏 + 𝑐, then 𝑎 = 𝑏

 Cancellation Law of Multiplication If 𝑎 ∙ 𝑐 = 𝑏 ∙ 𝑐, and 𝑐 ≠ 0, then 𝑎 = 𝑏

 Law of Transposition If 𝑎 + 𝑏 = 𝑐, then 𝑎 = 𝑐 − 𝑏

 Zero Property of Multiplication 𝑎∙0 = 0∙𝑎 = 0
