Full Marks: 20 Time: 1.5 Hrs
Answer any FOUR QUESTIONS including question No. 1 which is
compulsory. The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable and all
parts of a question should be answered at one place only

1. Answer the following questions [5×1=5]

(a). Find the general solution of the differential equation

(𝑥 ln 𝑥) 𝑦 ′ = 𝑦.
2 /2
(b). Find the orthogonal trajectory for 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑒 𝑥 .

(c). What will be the exact differential equation whose solution is

sinh(𝑥 3 𝑦) = 𝑐, where 𝑐 is an arbitrary constant?

(d). Apply the operator (𝐷 2 − 2𝐷) on 𝑒 3(𝑥+2).

𝑑𝑥
(e). Find an integrating factor for the ODE 𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 10𝑦 3 .

2. (a). Find a particular solution of [3]

2𝑥 4 √𝜋
𝑥𝑦 ′ = 𝑦 + ( ) cos(𝑥 2 ), 𝑦( 2 ) = √𝜋.
𝑦

(b). Reduce to first order and then solve [2]

𝑦 ′′ + 𝑒 2𝑦 (𝑦 ′ )3 = 0

3. (a). Find the integrating factor of the following differential equation which will [3]
make it exact. Hence solve the equation.

(b). Find a general solution of (20𝐷 2 + 4𝐷 + 𝐼)𝑦 = 0. [2]

4. (a). Find a differential equation for which the given 𝑦(𝑥) is a general solution [3]
and then determine the constants so that the given initial conditions are satisfied.
𝑦(𝑥) = (𝑐1 + 𝑐2 𝑥)𝑒 2𝑥 , 𝑦(−1) = 0, 𝑦 ′ (−1) = 3/𝑒 2 .

(b). Find a general solution of the differential equation [2]

𝑦 ′ + 2𝑦 = 4 sin 2𝑥

5. (a). A thermometer, showing 100 C is brought into a room whose temperature is 250 C. After 5 [3]
minutes it shows 200 C. When will the thermometer reach the room temperature 24.90C.

(b). Find a basis of solutions of the ODE by method of reduction of order [2]
